To think Hayden is a boys' name!? DH thinks girls'!?

Our little one arrived last week. My current favourite is Hayden, but DH thinks it's a girls' name. If we go for it, he wants Haydn (but this is pronounced Hi-don but says he will say it as Hay-don Shock)

Who is right!?

Hayden Christensen (actor) always pops in to my head when I hear the name Hayden. I associate it with being a boys name.

kali110 · 22/08/2017 01:39

It's both.

Marcipex · 22/08/2017 01:39

Hayden is a boys name, surely. I'm a bit worried you don't like Aiden though, as so many people won't say the H .

kali110 · 22/08/2017 01:40

It's both.
I always think of Hayden Panettiere when i hear the name now.

KC225 · 22/08/2017 01:40

My brother is called Haydn (as in the composer spelling) and he is 51

lambbbs · 22/08/2017 03:20

I love the name Haydn for a girl.. and Cameron!

Broken11Girl · 22/08/2017 03:28

You're right, people will pronounce Haydn Hi-don like the composer. Or have no idea how to say it.

Nuttynoo · 22/08/2017 06:00

Unisex but it has recently become a very popular girls name over the last year or so. It's possible most of the Haydens in your child's school year will be girls - if you think that will bother him then don't name him that.

EmilyAlice · 22/08/2017 06:10

Haydn is a Welsh boy's name. The one I know is pronounced hay not hy. Not a problem afaik.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/08/2017 06:12

Boys name.

sashh · 22/08/2017 06:13

It's a boy's name but so too are Shirley, Madison and Hilary.

If you like it go for it.

ChocolateRicecake · 22/08/2017 06:31

I am aware girls have the name but would initially assume a Hayden, however spelt, was a boy.

One of those situations -like many other names- where I'm happy to be corrected, but would you/your daughter want to be the one always doing the correcting (or otherwise always being asked 'boy or girl?')?

CMF1812 · 22/08/2017 06:37

My daughter is called Hayden (and we love it!) but it is a unisex name and a friend has a boy called Hayden. I hear it more for boys than girls.

Hayden Christensen is a male actor if you want to give him an example!

ChocolateRicecake · 22/08/2017 06:38

Sorry, son, not daughter. Was thinking the wrong way round.

TidyDancer · 22/08/2017 06:38

Haydn isn't silly. Hmm

Never heard it pronounced Hidon either, it's a family name here and always pronounced Haydon.

Crunchymum · 22/08/2017 06:43

Boys name to my sensibilities.

BertrandRussell · 22/08/2017 06:48

368 boys and 16 girls last year.

19lottie82 · 22/08/2017 07:33

I see it as a unisex name but calling your son Hyden , people will just be calling him Hayden and you (and him) will be constantly correcting them.

ButchyRestingFace · 22/08/2017 07:36

It's both. The first boy I had a crush on was called Hadrian.

I worked with someone once who named his firstborn Cornelius Hadrian.

The poor wee mite was set to grow up in Wishaw. Grin I mean Sad

MongerTruffle · 22/08/2017 07:38

This is the only Haydn I know!

TheNaze73 · 22/08/2017 07:41

All the Hayden's I know (children from primary school) were all girls

Witchend · 22/08/2017 07:43

I know a male Haydn, and female Hayden, so I agree with your dh.
The pronounce them the same way.

Filofanny · 22/08/2017 07:44

My very first crush was called Hayden. He was American and his dad was working in the U.K. for a while. I wanted to dance with him at the school disco, but he danced with a very clever and beautiful girl instead. I'm not sure why Grin. Careless Whisper, it was.

OhTheRoses · 22/08/2017 07:46

Marcipex Shock Speak for yourself!

I've only heard it used as a boys name. What about Hayley for a girl? I think that would be easier.

NotPennysBoat815 · 22/08/2017 07:49

I've taught boy and girl Haydens. Most recently a girl one though.
