To think DS isn't behind?

DS has just turned 10 months and I am constantly getting comments from people about his development.

He isn't walking, or crawling. He sits unaided and drags himself across the floor but doesn't properly crawl.

He doesn't say any words and doesn't wave or clap. Things many of my friends children were doing at this age.

He is my first so I have nothing to compare him to but he is developing, just at his own rate.

Should I be concerned or just let him get on with it?

Does he bottom shuffle because he prefers it or because he can't crawl? Apparently crawling helps develop right/left coordination on brain, which also helps with clapping.

No harm in asking your health visitor next time. Better to check earlier than dismiss it.

Have a look at the app/book The Wonder Weeks, it gives you indications of what your baby should be doing and what he might start doing. It costs a couple of pounds but I found it very useful with mine, as it was spot on on growth spurts and moodiness, plus I could help them develop certain things with the suggestions. You need to put your due date instead of child's birthday.

Both my DCs were bottom shufflers. Barely moved until they got up and walked at about 15/16 months.
It was a blessing as they weren't always getting into danger!!!
They are strapping sporty boys now.

Is he weight bearing? Will he stand if you hold his hands?

Miloarmadillo1 · 22/08/2017 11:11

The ASQ questionnaires the HV use are all online, 10m one is here They need to be doing half the things in each section in order not to raise concerns. People comment all the time on how babies develop and it is mostly nonsense but if many people are saying the same maybe you should at least track it?

Alanna1 · 22/08/2017 11:12

I think development concerns should be checked - just ask your GP. I wouldn't worry from what you've said but there's no harm in a professional opinion.

Aliveinwanderland · 22/08/2017 11:30

Yes he weight bares and has done for a long time. He just doesn't balance well.

I think sometimes taller DC take a little longer to get good balance because their centre of gravity is higher. My DS could cruise around the furniture quite early...around 8 months maybe but didn't walk until 15 months because he just couldn't balance well on his bambi legs.

Don't worry. DD was the same at 12 months. At 18 months she's caught up completely.

ToastyFingers · 22/08/2017 12:51

Both my DD and my niece didn't crawl till 12 months, walk till 18 and so on,

They're both gorgeous talking, walking 4 year olds now but my DD does have some delays to her gross and fine motor skills. For example, she can't use a knife/fork/spoon well, can't hip on one leg or come close to riding a scooter etc.

I suppose what I'm saying is, it might be absolutely nothing at all, but this was the age I started noticing DD falling behind, and it is worth keeping an eye on, as the help we've received from the OT has been invaluable.

MycatsaPirate · 22/08/2017 12:54

DD1 didn't crawl ever. She just did a bizarre bum shuffle meaning she had both hands free to grab stuff.

There is no set time for babies to do stuff. They haven't read these books everyone spouts stuff about.

Stop worrying.

DS1 was walking by 10 months. DS2 didn't walk until he was 16 months. Looking back at videos, I see DS1 was always on the verge of failing over when he started walking, whereas DS2 was perfectly balanced. Before looking back at the videos, I had it in my mind that they were doing exactly the same thing when they started to walk, but their abilities were quite different - bear this in mind when your friends tell you what their children have done at a particular stage.

Since then, I've noted that DS1 has determination when he desperately wants to do something. DS2 is laid back and just does what's required when it's required

Wetcappuccino · 22/08/2017 14:19

My DD did not walk at all (even round furniture/ with a push along) until she was 18 months. Then was toddling unaided within a week. Same with speech - only said a handful of words until nearly 2 then within a few months was speaking in sentences. She is not behind any of her peers at all now and is ahead of some. I would try not to let it worry you at all - totally still within normal range.

Pennywhistle · 22/08/2017 14:24

My twins walked at about 10 months. My friends DS (1 week older) didn't walk until 19 months.

My friends DS was chattering away about 5 months before either of my two said much more than DaDa.

They are all now 9 yo and there's hardly any difference between them.

There's no need to worry just now.
