neighbour's dog attacked my cat

This is a bit long but I'm a bit upset and so it's hard to be concise! Our flat has access to a very large communal garden. Our cat is elderly, very well behaved and goes out for a little patrol or a snooze in the bushes a few times a day. Usually this is supervised. The only exception is in the mornings my partner will feed her and open the back door on her way to work so the cat can go out if she wants before I wake up. There is a dog who lives upstairs and before we moved in used to be let out unsupervised. They kindly stopped this because of our cat.

Anyway cat was out in the morning before I woke up. The neighbour didn't see her so let the dog out which then chased the cat out of the bushes and went for her, before grabbing her leg and dragging her down the tree she was trying to escape up. The owner at this point pulled the dog off and shooed the cat back inside.

I (being asleep) knew absolutely none of this and so woke up, heard her bell jingle under the bed (where she often spends several hours napping or hanging out with a toy) and carried on with the day. In the evening I thought something was off so tried coaxing her out with food and treats but nothing- we had to pull the whole bed apart in the end to find that she couldn't get out because her back leg had gone limp. At this point our vet had closed and so we took care of her until we could
rush her in first thing. With her age and mysterious onset the vet had to run every test to try and identify the cause (it could have been a clot or something neurological). A day and a £550 bill later the vet found two of her lower vertebrae to be quite crushed (worsened by arthritis) and severe bruising to her leg.

Two DAYS later the owner of the dog has come round and told us what happened, after another neighbour told them our cat had been mysteriously injured. Apparently at the time they tried to say but they left it because 'nobody was home' (despite the back door being open Hmm).

I am angry about what happened because of the pain my lovely cat is in, but I realise it was an honest mistake, it's a dogs nature and with sharing a garden accidents happen. I am however LIVID that they left it almost three days to mention it, and only because someone else guilted them into it. Not only could I have taken the poor cat to the vet much earlier and gotten her out of pain quicker, we could have halved the vet bill by not having to explore every avenue. I just feel that if it had been reversed and it was my dog, I would have been round a few times that morning at least to try and let the owners know asap. AIBU? Some people I've told agree with us, but others have said we should be grateful they said anything at all. I don't know what to think and I'm up anyway so I thought I'd ask what you think.

tl;dr: neighbour's dog attacked my cat and then they took two days to tell us

@willyoujustbequiet I don't think it was their fault, I think it was an accident. We are insured. At no point have I said I wanted money off them, or for them to admit fault- I was upset that they didn't tell us for almost three days.

Bc they weren't adequately supervising their dog

Agree they should have told you but your cat wasn't supervised in a communal garden either.

FrogFairy · 21/08/2017 18:59

If your neighbours could not speak to you face to face, they could at least have popped a note through your door to say the cat and dog had a kerfuffle. Especially if they saw their dog dragging your cat out of the tree and had to pull it off. Even if she had not been injured, she could have been left very stressed.

NoKidsTwoCats · 21/08/2017 19:09

Oh no :( So sorry your cat is hurt.

There are certain legal expectations placed on dog owners regarding their dogs' behaviour. This means a dog could be deemed 'dangerously out of control' if it attacks another animal - regardless of whether it's on public or private land. More info here: www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/overview

Obviously this may not be something you want to pursue but thought I'd give the info here as there's always so much misinformation (including in this thread) about the laws surrounding dogs and cats - which are very different, whatever people's personal opinions of what's 'right' and what's 'wrong' are.

All that said, it does sound like an unfortunate accident although I completely get that you're upset she didn't tell you until after she heard your cat was injured. The fact she came to tell you as soon as she realised does suggest she's not being horrible about it though - maybe originally she just thought your cat was OK so didn't think she needed to do anything?

Wishing your cat an extra speedy recovery, though :) For the future, could you maybe agree some sort of time share for the two of you? eg for set hours each day it's the dog's time outside and you just keep your cat in during those times to prevent a reoccurrence?

magicinthenight · 21/08/2017 19:20

@weewheely I have never said that the dog was not adequately supervised or that they should not be able to use the garden unsupervised. It was an unfortunate accident that I just wish I'd been told about sooner.

@Frogfairy that's what I would have done if the situation was reversed.

@nokidstwocats thank you :) this is something we're hoping to agree on with them for the future depending on how she goes. At the moment I think it will just be supervised outdoor time for the foreseeable future.

Thanks to everyone for their well wishes for the cat Star

It's not a dogs nature to attack and injure a cat. My DDog would chase away cats who came into the garden but would never ever injure them. The neighbour should pay the vets bills.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/08/2017 19:28

Of course it is their fault

If they have a dog that chases cats and attacks them and the owner has to pull be dog off to gain control then they should train their dog better

I have seen many dogs chase cats and their owners are able to control them by command one walks past our house every day gets excited when he sees my cat but his owner tells him to walk on the dog is well trained though he does keep him on a lead

crazycatgal · 21/08/2017 19:29

People saying the cat wasn't supervised - cats have the right to free roam so the cat did not need to be supervised. The dog should have been under control in a communal area.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 21/08/2017 19:30

And hope you cat is feeling better soon I'm am sure she is getting plenty of fuss and cuddles

londonrach · 21/08/2017 19:36

Yabu. Shared garden. If your pet out you should be too supervising. If not keep it in.

LivingInMidnight · 21/08/2017 19:37

Hope your cat feels better soon! If it was me I would have made sure an owner knew. It's not hard really, just think what you'd hope someone would do if your pet was injured. I doubt you would have failed to tell them if their dog had been injured. Flowers

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 21/08/2017 19:39

What an unfortunate accident. I'm with you on the neighbours front. I would be so incredibly pissed off if it happened to my cat and the neighbours didn't bother to tell me. It's not hard to put a note through asking you to knock for them or just briefly what happened. I would be so upset if my dog did this to a cat I would be going to out of my way to help. I hope your cat gets well soon.

misscockerspaniel · 21/08/2017 19:50

Love and treats to poor kitty Flowers

magicinthenight · 21/08/2017 22:51

Thanks guys, we are hoping she will soon be on the mend.
