Dishonest shop staff

This lunchtime was in a large branch of Boots. Looked in chilled cabinet for pasta salad, saw assistant with 2 in her hand, prawn, just what I wanted - to my disbelief saw her tuck them behind the chilled drinks, making great show of pulling bottles to the front of the shelf, looking around shiftily. When she had moved on I took them out, even better they were marked down to 50p each! Whereupon she sprang back and said I couldn't buy them, she was keeping them for another customer who had 'gone to get some money'. Told her she couldn't do that, they're on the shelf and I'm buying them. She retreated. So I bought them, subsequently spoke to manager who was full of apologies. For me the markdown wasn't the issue, I would have bought them at full price but I was annoyed that the assistant had challenged me - don't believe a customer had to go and find £1 ffs! think she had them earmarked for herself.

The manager knew he did it. The box was damaged and the console scratched.

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/08/2017 18:13

To explain the console thing fully. First off this is about 15 years ago.
The console was a display one so had been used and was scratched.
When it came off the demo (when they stopped selling the console in question) DH boxed it back up and stuck it in a corner of the stock room
The manager knew it was in the stock room. It was an awesome outdated console that wouldn't have sold it it was on the shelves. So you can all get off your moral high horses.

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/08/2017 18:14

That was a rogue 'awesome' there.

scaryclown · 20/08/2017 18:21

It's true, I didn't do any mass murders until I saved an old bagel for myself once. It's a gateway crime to career criminality and should be stamped out, you should make her a scapegoat for the banking industry and make sure she never works again, gets homeless, addicted to crack etc. We can't have criminals in jobs or not reliant on the state, we need as many dependent unemployed people as we can get.

Please destroy her life before it's too late....
Hmm

That's not quite the same spin on events as "DH once hid a games console in the stock room until it was reduced to £25 by the automated system"

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/08/2017 18:23

It's exactly the same. He knew it was there. The manager knew it was there. It was hidden. The system reduced it.
Also, no one died, no one was dishonest and no one lost their job.

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/08/2017 18:26

Sometimes I go into Waitrose on my way home from work. I know that their fresh bread is reduced at the till at 5pm. Sometimes I'll go to the fresh bread bit before 5 and get stuff before it is reduced knowing that by the time I get to the till it will be reduced.
I am denying other people the chance to buy reduced stuff.

VeryCunningStunt · 20/08/2017 18:28

It's really not. Your first version is that he hid a console until it was reduced. In the second, expanded version the manager knows about it, it's in a damaged box, it's out-dated, it's an ex-display item and it was unfit for sale anyway.

You can surely see that the additional information in the second account add up to a very different series of events than simply hiding something off the shelf to buy it for a reduced price at a later date, can't you?

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/08/2017 18:35

Whatever. I'm really not that invested.
I only bothered explaining as people seemed to be demanding his head on a spike and sign saying theif around his neck.

Pigface1 · 20/08/2017 18:36

The thread title makes this sound much more interesting than it is.

You spoke to the manager about it???

You must have very little else going on in your life.

Also why did you want BOTH the salads??

Pigface1 · 20/08/2017 18:38

How do you actually know she was being dishonest, anyway? She could have been telling you the truth.

BornAgainScorpion · 20/08/2017 18:38

Cheeky of her to do that. Its just a bit of pasta. Why is she desperate?

SnickersWasAHorse · 20/08/2017 18:40

The op or the staff member?

timeforabrewnow · 20/08/2017 18:43

It all sounds a bit greedy. Why not get a sandwich instead?

AngryGinger · 20/08/2017 19:23

I hope you enjoyed them, you sound incredibly spiteful

BornAgainScorpion · 20/08/2017 19:28

The op or the staff member?

Staff member.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 20/08/2017 19:32

No where in the OP does it say that assistant had the price gun and marked down stock. It only says she hid marked down stock, with the wild assumption she was going to purchase it later.

I hope none of you ever get called to sit on a jury. You'd have a hard time sorting evidence from monumental assumptions

Montymorency · 20/08/2017 19:32

Again, was buying for two people.

You were the kid who told tales on the other kids in school, weren't you OP?

somanylovelyearrings · 20/08/2017 19:35

Angelo Grin

Odoreida · 20/08/2017 19:35

also is there anything more disgusting than a Boots prawn salad that is about to go off, really

pigeondujour · 20/08/2017 19:35

Jesus. Imagine letting that story about the games console wind you up. That's even weirder than the OP getting wound up about the salad or sandwich or whatever it was.

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 20/08/2017 19:40

How petty and nasty

Can't bear tedious people like this

Oh, you just happened to bump into the store manager? Had them call for him more like..

Montymorency · 20/08/2017 19:49

StiilDrivingMeBonkers you seem to be one of the few who have read properly. I was looking for pasta salad for two people, we didn't want sandwiches (there were only meat ones anyway). The staff member HID items behind bottled drinks - what interpretation would anyone/supervisor/manager put on that? Did I say I was looking to get her sacked? Presumably Boots have policies and procedures, this would not accord with them.
