AIBU to not believe my bank.

My bank has an awful habit of bookmarking 2 payments for the same item. Normally its annoying but not a huge problem. If i need the money ill make a phone call and they say oh yes we can see its happened we will sort that, and its fixed immediately. If i'm not in need ill just wait and it sorts itself in about 3 days. However today its happened and i need the money, so i phoned up to be told although they can see the payments they cant see who they are from and that departments closed as its a sunday. So here i am needing to do a top up shop with half the money i planned to have. Not a huge deal, managable but a bit of a pain.

My bank says this is how banks work and is the fault of the online shops not theirs. AIBU to not believe that. Does everyobe else actually make aure there is at least double the amount in their account everytime they make an online purchase?

Is this when you order your delivery online? I think this is an issue where online supermarket orders made do a pre-auth but this must be really disruptive for you. I would be surprised if this is a bank issue. Having worked in authorisations area of a bank this is rather frequent.

OnionKnight · 20/08/2017 11:00

I'm with the Co-Op and like I said it happened once.

Migraleve · 20/08/2017 11:02

I would have changed banks long since. This is a ridiculous way to do things.

Echo the PP who mentioned only having one debit card. We have 2 joint accounts and a personal account each. That's 3 debit cards each. Online transfers are simple

Nousernameforme · 20/08/2017 11:02

Have you used the same online stores I have? Thunderblunder great name by the way giggled typing that

OP posts:
Branleuse · 20/08/2017 11:02

Never noticed this happening to me. RBS

Migraleve · 20/08/2017 11:02

Meant to add joint accounts with BOS

Personal with Barclays and TSB

Have never had money held twice with any of those accounts

Thunderblunder · 20/08/2017 11:07

Nousernameforme I've used Tesco, Asda and Marks and Spencer and like I've said had no problem.
I also bank with Barclays and DH banks with HSBC and haven't had it with them either.

LakieLady · 20/08/2017 11:10

I've never had this happen (Nationwide, Santander and Lloyds).

I'm another one in favour of putting the money eggs in lots of baskets. At least if one of our banks has an IT crash, we can use one of our other a/c's.

A credit card is a good idea too, but only if you can trust yourself to use it wisely. I'm very disciplined with mine now, but have got into real trouble with them in the past.

laughingclouds · 20/08/2017 11:11

I've only had this once - and it was a couple thousand because it was for a rail season ticket! I unleashed hell at the poor bank worker on the phone! Never had it since.

HarrisHawk · 20/08/2017 11:11

We use Ocado and Barclays and this has never happened, it's not normal imo

endofthelinefinally · 20/08/2017 11:16

Change to First Direct.

Nousernameforme · 20/08/2017 11:27

I've spoken to them again and been told there is absolutely nothing they can do I even asked if the fraud department could help but apparently not as its a dispute.

I've always accepted it i suppose as the bank is just matter of fact that this is how its done. It wasnt until today that i thought well i cant be the only one without enough to cover every purchase twice just in case.
I am off to search up banks, ironically m&s it seems to a good transfer deal

ForagingForFaerieGold · 20/08/2017 11:30

Yes. If it's different retailers at random times, your bank is lying. It's them. Did you say it was the co.op? They have a bad name actually. Bacs and online transfers can be ridiculously slow too. I'd change banks.

londonmummy1966 · 20/08/2017 11:39

If its the co-op bank I'm not suprised they are dreadful. I used to bank and have a credit card with them. I ended up having to take a colleague in with me as a witness everytime I paid my credit card off (which I always did via the drop box in the branch) as they messed it up so many times and said I hadn't paid....

I've banked with BOS and First Direct for many years now and have always found their service absolutely excellent. BOS were brilliant and super efficient when there was a fraud on the account that took us a while to spot. I use FD as a back up these days - so I put a bit in on pay day so I have emergency money if I need it at the end of the month. If you are good with credit cards then look for one that gives you cash back - I have an Amex platinum - which also looks really flashy (although it isn't) and has led to me being given all sorts of free samples and stuff when I pay with it that I don't get if I use a bog standard debit card....

Fluffyears · 20/08/2017 11:45

I've never noticed this with co--op I'd be raging as I always use my debit card and very rarely cash.

liminality · 20/08/2017 12:12

To the person saying get another debit account - not all of us have sufficient income for more than one account. There'd be no point me having a second account - there would be nothing in it!

shushpenfold · 20/08/2017 12:13

Nationwide and never had this. EVER.

Autumnchill · 20/08/2017 12:23

Never had this and yes M&S gave a good transfer, we've just done it and currently got £140 sat on a gift card. Check money saving expert as they had a better transfer deal and it went without a hitch

BarbaraOcumbungles · 20/08/2017 12:31

I bank with co-op and have never had this problem.

How weird!

RandomMess · 20/08/2017 12:40

I would ask for a replacement bank card, wonder if it's an issue with the chip?

Migraleve · 20/08/2017 12:46

That's fine, you can have a basic account with nothing in it. Or start to have child benefit (if you get) paid in or do a standing order from one to the other if you feel the need to use it - one of mine rarely sees any money, but it's there and if I do need I can transfer

Ocado put 4 markers on one of my accounts for 1 delivery.
I think some places put a hold for the estimate and then the transaction through, and the hold doesn't always clear straight away.
Which sucks if you are living month to month.

SabineUndine · 20/08/2017 15:33

MrTrebus I've got one debit card and no credit cards. I paid off my credit card this year and swore I'd never have another.

NoFucksImAQueen · 20/08/2017 15:33

Every transaction? Fuck that, that'd drive me nuts!
Iv been with 3 banks over the years and this has never happened to me apart from one tjme when 2 payments did accidentally get taken (as in charged twice not just pending) and the bank sorted it immediately getting the money back to me instantly.
Leave and tell them why
