Smoking - images on cigarette packets

Posting here for traffic really, but it does have an element of AIBU about it.

It's about smoking. A disgusting habit, and I say that as a smoker. It smells, it is unpleasant, it is horrible to be around (even though I smoke, I can't stand being around other people who smoke (I know, I'm hypocritical, and I will freely admit that). It is clearly bad for your health, and it stains Teeth, clothes, seeps into things, lingers, it's a thoroughly disgusting habit to have. I'm writing that, and simply writing these truths is kind of like a "cleansing" for me - these are the things that want me to give this horrible habit up. I know it's bad for my health, but I'm kinda finding more value in it being a socially unacceptable habit that is helping me give it up as opposed to trying to give up purely for the benefit of my own health. If that makes sense!

Anyway, on to my AIBU. I bought a packet of fags today. They now all look the same, but you don't know which picture you're going to get on the packet until you buy a packet. And the pictures are horrible, intentionally so, trying to give people to give up. But the picture on the pack I bought today was of a man, curled up on a bed, his head in (one of) his hands. The caption above the photo was "smoking increases the risk of impotence"

Now, forgive me, but this is clearly a "stock" photo - a posed photo - the man in the picture is obviously a model, his body is fit, muscly, healthy. It is a posed picture for the benefit of the message on this particular packet.

Which made me think. Some packets have pictures of toes that are missing (lost as a result of smoking due to decreased circulation). A horrible picture of a man with a huge tumour on his throat (implying throat cancer as a result of smoking). A picture of a glazed eyeball (lost sight ) as a result of smoking. A picture of rotten teeth (as a result of smoking).

Are these all "stock" photos, or "posed" photos? Are the pictures we are seeing on cigarette packets truly of people/individuals who have suffered as a result of smoking? Or are they just "stock/posed" photos? The impotence picture on the packet I have in front of me is clearly a posed photo. So what about the rest of these photos?

If they are "stock" or "posed" photos, then, why? If the effects of smoking are so bad, which is something I think we can all agree on, then why not show actual people who have suffered horrendously because of smoking as opposed to photos that are in want of a better word, manipulated through captions? The photo of the male model on my current pack actually has had the opposite affect on me - a clearly fit, healthy male, posing in order to try and portray a scenario that is a potential outcome of smoking. I'm not suggesting that the pic should be of a flacid willy (!!!!), but that it is so obviously posed has resulted in that photo having no affect on me at all.

Ok, and breathe!!!! Just wanting to hear your thoughts on this particular thought that I had today :D

I'm a smoker and the pics have no effect on me as I'm sure is the case for a lot of smokers.
They all look staged which defeats the object really.
The one of a babys coffin is really unnecessary.

NC4now · 19/08/2017 19:48

Did anyone else find they started smoking MORE since they brought in the new packs? I was a casual weekend drunk smoker till they phased out 10 packs. Once I had a 20 deck in my handbag I started having the odd one in the week and before I knew it I was on 10 a day.
Every pack was an investment.

DearMrDilkington · 19/08/2017 19:56

I really don't understand what the photos are all about. They never put me off smoking, nor anyone I know. I stopped smoking due to it staining my teeth and the god awful smell.

I haven't heard of anyone quitting because of the photos. If your a smoker your aware of the damage it's doing, the coughing was another factor of me giving up.

Some may argue it'd put teenagers off, I doubt it. I could imagine most teenagers would just compare who has the most grim photo on their pack.

AreWeThereYet000 · 19/08/2017 20:11

I very rarely look at the photos on the pack, the only one I remember is the guy in the morgue - I thought he was on a sunbed Confused but yes most photos will probably be edited to show the effects

Babbitywabbit · 19/08/2017 20:19

Why does it matter if the photos are staged? If you want to voluntarily pay the govt extra taxes a few pics are unlikely to stop you!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/08/2017 22:31

Nc4 I agree, I reckon more people smoke more now they are only 20's. Before i quit I would buy 10 a day but I know i would have smoked more if I could. So people are probably smoking 10-12 a day, buying 2 packs every 3 days. For me, it was the 20s only that have stopped my occasional smoking habit, as I would sometimes buy 10 and smoke a few and run the rest under the tap. I can't afford to do that with 20. So I guess it works both ways. The images and plain packets wouldn't put me off at all.

LittleEpisode · 19/08/2017 22:44

NC4 completely agree! I was s strict 10 a day smoker but now I have 20 there I can't help but smoke them. Same with my husband he only ever smoked a couple a day but is smoking more than ever. I desperately want to stop but i find it so so hard

silkpyjamasallday · 19/08/2017 22:55

When I smoked and so did most of my friends we used to compare which picture we had got, 'pizza neck' was one you hoped to avoid, it was like a pp said a sort of morbid modern equivalent of collectible cigarette cards.

The new ones I've seen are mostly more comedic than off putting. DP showed me a meme of the naked curled up man which said he was curled up naked and depressed as he had had to sell his clothes to buy fags.

NotACleverName · 19/08/2017 23:19

My favourites are the ash foetus and dead Nigel Farage. I'm not put off by any of the images, in all honesty.

MrsOverTheRoad · 19/08/2017 23:22

Elle the throat one is real. The man is from a rural Chinese village, hence the beard and the untreated tumour.

Karmapolicearrestthisman · 19/08/2017 23:36

The smoking photos are a good example of cognitive dissonance and quite interesting. I used to work in a shop and smokers would insist the photos had no influence or purpose, then in the same breath request a different photo on their pack because they couldn't bear the graphic one.

The point about whether the images are stock or not is funny because it's just denial. Of course the hideous tumour is real, smoking causes them all the time.

Yes smoking can cause disease, as can excess alcohol consumption. As I said before do you think we should put photos of alcoholics on wine bottles or close ups of cirrhosed livers? No. I think smokers and drinkers all know the risks without gratuitous images on packaging. Perhaps they could try photos on formula of babies with eczema? Statistics do not equal certainty, just probability.

I'm not a smoker but I loathe how stuff like this goes on. Give smokers more info on vaping, how that can really help people quit would be more useful.

NC4now · 20/08/2017 09:43

LittleEpisode I've just read the Allen Carr Easy way to stop smoking book, and it makes a lot of sense. I slipped up and nicked a roll up off DH last night after a few glasses of wine but I didn't enjoy it and am in no rush to repeat the experience. I won't buy another 20 pack again now.
I'm done.

Babbitywabbit · 20/08/2017 10:03

How about an image of the Chancellor of the Exchequor saying 'Kerr-ching' ?
The thought of voluntarily paying shedloads of tax into Tory coffers would be more off putting to most sane people!

CosmoSmallpiece · 20/08/2017 10:12

Given that the picture of a diseased smoker's lung was actually a pig's lung stained black there's no reason to believe any of these images are genuine. Public Health have long given up being honest where smoking is concerned. Won't be long before they try the same tricks on alcohol, sugary drinks and fast food.

That made my DP's day, he thinks he looks like the model in the pic Hmm He looks much better than that to me Wink
