"System outage in readiness for new banking legislation: We'll be carrying out work from 23:30 on Saturday 19 August until 15:30 on Sunday 20 August to align with new banking legislation. We’re sorry, you won’t be able to manage your account online, by phone or in the app, or use Pingit during this time. Payments into your account during this time will be added as soon as our work is finished."

I do ALL my banking online. Everything's in the savings account. I just whack it into the current account when I want to spend it. I'm meant to be doing the weekly shop! I can't even transfer to husband's current account with his bank.

Anyone else feeling like a right daft sod and scrounging around down the back of the couch? Grin

I only got message when logged in the other day. It was also mentioned on Twitter.

Just as well not ordered shop for tmrw as they wont deliver unless money is received from bank

Smidge001 · 19/08/2017 17:11

I think she means a Yurt!! Have no idea what a yurd is... Grin

Lovemusic33 · 19/08/2017 17:26

Didn't even get a message.

I think you are being a bit OTT, I wish I had nothing better to worry about than the bank being down for a few hours Grin. I'm sure you can cope a day or even 2 without online banking.

youngestisapsycho · 19/08/2017 17:35

I've just been in my Barclays mobile app and moved some money....

rosy71 · 19/08/2017 17:36

That's a really strange way to live. Why on earth would you not keep a float in your current account. What if your internet is down or you miss a train and need to buy another ticket. Why would anyone make their life so needlessly precarious?

I do this. I do keep a small amount in my current account though. If I couldn't use the internet to transfer money, I'd just use my credit card instead.

Squeegle · 19/08/2017 17:38

This is such a pointless thread Grin

TroysMammy · 19/08/2017 17:39

I had a text message yesterday.

5rivers7hills · 19/08/2017 17:40

I don't understand why you have to transfer money for every day purchases like food shopping. Waste of time and effort.

DerelictWreck · 19/08/2017 17:42

You know you can do transfers over the phone right OP? Just in case this happens again and you get stuck - just as quick for the money to appear in another account.

BabychamSocialist · 19/08/2017 17:50

We always have a small amount of cash (less than £100 in the safe) in our house because of this kind of thing.

We started after the Northern Rock fiasco, where we had a joint account that we paid bills and shopping from. When there was that run on the bank we spent an entire day queuing up to get our money out and it made us swear that we'd never be in that situation again.

Ever since, we've had our savings, joint and 'spending' accounts at different banks. E.g. right now our savings are with First Direct, our joint account is with the Halifax, and our everyday spending accounts are with the TSB. We feel a lot more safe that way.

MudGolum · 19/08/2017 17:56

Totally pointless Squeegle. But here we are! Grin

I have food and beer. All good in the hood.

I don't understand why you have to transfer money for every day purchases like food shopping.

They get angry when I try to take stuff without paying. Husband usually has his in his current account but we bought white goods last week and used his account.

I sometimes use mobile banking Derelict but don't use phone banking cos I'm a hard of hearing.

Yes! Yurt. I'd love to actually live in one of those Smidge.

Still ok for me to get online, glad you are ok OP

BabychamSocialist · 19/08/2017 18:57

As long as you've got wine, you'll be OK.

TroelsLovesSquinkies · 19/08/2017 19:17

Try logging in again, I just did. I've had that message at the top of the page for ages and got an email about it yesterday

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 19/08/2017 19:26

Isn't that message just giving you advanced warning? Presumably you can just move some money now

I suppose the reason you missed it is because Barclays don't have up to date contact details for you

Agree with having a credit card or cash in the house of you have arrangements that mean that not having access to online banking overnight is a problem.

Tazerface · 19/08/2017 19:31

It's a warning - you have still 11.30 tonight and as they've done this three or four times already this year it's likely it'll be done and dusted by about 11am tomorrow anyway.

Derelict - if the OLB systems are down I don't think you can use telephone banking either, although I know debit card withdrawals from an ATM are ok.

carefreeeee · 19/08/2017 19:33

How can people live like this?

Keep at least £100 in your house/purse at all times

Have 2 current accounts at different banks and a credit card as well.

Keep 1000 in your current account at each bank at all times (ideally choose accounts that pay some interest on it)

It's highly likely that a bank will go offline for a while at some point. Look at the recent NHS hack/terrorism threats etc. It will happen. You shouldn't be so reliant on the internet and one bank!

MudGolum · 19/08/2017 19:39

Christ on a bike Carefree (really!!!). DH banks with another bank. He usually has spends. Can I add that to my title.

£1000 in each account? Lucky you. Any fucker robbing me would be in for some dissapointment.

Keep at least £1000 in each account at all times

I'd be interested to know what percentage of the UK population would be in a position to do that Hmm

JessieMcJessie · 19/08/2017 20:35

Maybe get a credit card for emergencies?
