WIBU to ask for a slight reduction in rent?

8 days ago the boiler broke. Landlord is lovely, but also very busy with his proper job. I've had to take three days off work to be in when British Gas come round. The last time they came they said that it would need a whole new boiler. As we're on the third floor of a building on a high street, a new boiler is going to involve scaffolding, and thus isn't going to be done quickly. This is going to be at least another day off work.

I've agreed to take the time off because LL lives quite far away and works full time.
I've got a 4 year old and am now sick of not being able to have a shower, if I asked him to come then it would all take even longer!

There's still no date arranged for the work to start. I'm behind at work, and I want shower my daughter!

WIBU to ask for some money off the next month's rent?

and another 1.5 days off work. if they are not coming until Wednesday this gives your LL time to arrange A/L, come down to the property and wait for the tradesman.

It might be worth getting a second opinion from an independent contractor as BG are notorious for saying you need a new boiler when a repair is perfectly possible and potentially much quicker (but less profitable for them of course)

Helena cmj thing is when you own your own home you can choose when the boiler man comes and make the appointment for your convenience People who rent cannot do that.

Yes they can. The OP could make the arrangements with the plumber herself and arrange a suitable time.

^^ This. Why should you lose out on a day at work and pay for the same when it's his property and responsibility to fix?

When our gas was condemned when I was a child my Mum got environmental health involved as we had no heating, hot water or cooking facilities. If he starts becoming dickish, get hem in and they can perform the work on his behalf and bill him for it.

It's not at all the same as asking for a reduction from your mortgage company.

I have a flat I rent out and no way would I expect tenant to take days off. If he can't deal with these things promptly and without you needing to take time off he needs to pay someone to manage the property, lovely or not.

cjm10979 renting and owning a property are totally different situations, they cannot be compared.

When you rent you pay a premium for that property to be kept to a certain standard, ie utilities and facilities provided should be fully operational.

Once a buyer purchases a property the maintenance of that property becomes solely the buyer's responsibility. That's why rentals (often) have agents managing such issues. When you buy somewhere, you're on your own
