Not to go to work tomorrow

I have got some sort of tummy bug. This is day 2 and no improvement really.

Had to bolt to the toilet at work yesterday during a meeting. I had told my line manager I had been sick already and did she want me to go home. But we were short staffed and it was "if you absolutely must" sort of comments. Weird because I'd assume vomiting = go home and don't spread the lurgy. But I managed until 3 doing a sitting down job but had to leave when puked so much I wet myself.

Today was my day off but I'm still sick. I think maybe food poisoning. No more vomiting but diarreaoh that is now just liquid and I feel terrible. So much for 24hr bug.

I really can't face work tomorrow but we have been taken over by a corporate and they are strict on absence. There has to be a back to work interview and I'm worried I won't be believed as sickness bugs are usually 24hour. They are scathing about people having time off sick and you are generally expected to soldier on but I really feel awful.

If you go in, I reallly hope you don't work with my Dh. I really don't want him to catch your bug as a nice weekend treat and then pass it on to the children so we've got to have time of next week to sort childcare out.
Please stay at home and keep your bug to yourself.
If you have diarrhoea, you aren't going to be able to work properly anyway, you will be forever worrying about going to the loo. Take the day to get better and spend the weekend recovering.

Don't go in! And don't worry about back to work meetings, every employer I've worked at has done them and it's to cover their own back really. There used to be habitual piss-takers at my work and when my employer tried to get rid of them they said they weren't 'supported' through their absences, so the 'back to work' meetings were introduced. For people who aren't piss-takers it's just a box ticking exercise and there's nothing about this situation that would give them the impression you're taking the piss.

I didn't go in but I feel guilty as we are already two members of staff down. My other half for today is a Trojan though and will cope.

I am sure it is just box ticking but still anxiety inducing.

My manager made a comment once that she hates people flaking off sick. "Not like you LEM you'd come in if you were hit by a truck" so hopefully this means they will believe me. It's just that the other girl who was feeling unwell this week (I thought we had the same) managed to stay in work. Although she wasn't sick.

Upside is I've lost 5 pounds in 3 days Shock

Stay at home and look for a job somewhere better to work !

MiraiDevant · 18/08/2017 08:56

Glad you didn't - for your sake. Sometimes we really do need to look after ourselves. Take care OP

Health is wealth. Put work out of your mind.

ScarlettDarling · 18/08/2017 09:08

I'm one of those people who really tries to never stay off sick but with stomach bugs you have no option. You really can't be in work if you're going to be running to the loo for sickness and/or diarrhoea. Stay home, no guilt required!

RebootYourEngine · 18/08/2017 09:25

I think it is selfish to go into work or anywhere when sick because there are so many people in the world with weak immune systems which can result im life or death.

Employers also need to be more understanding. The NHS have a 48 hour rule for a reason.

llangennith · 18/08/2017 10:00

If it's the same bug as the one doing the rounds here it's awful. Last week DD's husband was unable to leave the house for 4 days in case of unexpected urgent need for the toilet. Stay away from other people OP!

I'd also speak to a pharmacist before taking Imodium etc... I don't think it is a great idea to stop your body trying to get rid of whatever it is trying to get rid of.

And why can't companies treat their staff like bloody adults?? With a bit of trust and respect! You let me judge if I am well enough to work and trust that I am not lying about it! I wouldn't be happy if my employer treated me like that. Luckily, they don't and there is some give and take where I work!

LEMtheoriginal · 18/08/2017 15:14

Ethelfleda - they are new employers. Our old bosses were so lovely and still around but not our bosses anymore Sad they told us nothing would change. Everything has Angry.

You are right - I have worked here for 18 months full time. 3 years part-time and this is the 2nd day I've had off. The first after I collapsed with a uti (I don't always get uti's ...but when I do.....). I will try and contain my trite answers on Monday when my poor line manager does my return to work interview.

I used to feel valued as an employee but now we are just numbers - it's heart breaking.
