To think selling on Ebay is a bit rubbish?

Made it one of my resolutions this year to clear out some clutter around the house. I thought I'd set up an Ebay account as a good way to do this. But honestly I think I'm done with it. Even if it goes smoothly if I'm only selling some bits for a couple of pounds by the time Ebay take 10% of the final bid and P&P, and then paypal charges, it's hardly worth the effort that goes into walking to the Post Office.

And there are so many cheeky fuckers on there I honestly can't be bothered anymore. I sold a couple of maternity dresses for 1p (yes, 1p - I was hoping if I started bidding low it might encourage more bidding, but it back-fired, hey hum) and the person who bought the dresses still felt the need to quibble about the £4 P&P, for two dresses that she bought for 1p each.

The latest incident that has taken the proverbial Biscuit is I offered to sell an item for DH. It's a piece of sound-engineering equipment which cost nearly £1500 new, but he no longer needs it and so he has decided to sell it as it's large and heavy and is taking up a lot of space (obviously therefore being sold as a collection only item). Someone won the bidding for £100 (which was dirt cheap, so they got a bargain). However they haven't paid or responded to my messages about when they want to collect / how they want to pay for the item. I've opened an unpaid item case but from what I can gather all that will happen if the buyer doesn't pay is the buyer will get a ticking off and that's it. In what other auction in the world could you bid on an item and then get away with not paying if you are the winning bidder?

I think I'm just going to sell the rest of our clutter on the Facebook selling sites. At least if people muck you about on there you don't get charged listing fees for the privilege.

I've recently listed something for a colleague as he doesn't have an account - got a message about an hour after listing, agreed the price, told the guy the address, said he was on his way - never turned up. When I emailed to ask if he was no longer interested, he said he'd sourced the same thing for half the price - totally doubtful. I said it would have been nice if he'd let us know as someone was waiting in for him and he told me fuck off. I've reported it to ebay, haven't heard anything back

SloanePeterson · 17/08/2017 14:01

Never do auctions, only buy it now is my advice. People want to search quickly for what they want and don't want to wait for an auction to end. I shift a lot of stuff this way, and never end up getting prices I'm not happy with.

SunsetGrigio · 17/08/2017 14:08

Yep, I once sold a gorgeous dress on eBay for some ridiculously low amount, like £3 or something, I was livid. Then she said she never received it even though it was signed for by someone at her address and even eBay still made me refund her.

pasturesgreen · 17/08/2017 14:09

Your starting price should be the lowest price you're happy to accept, there's no guarantee a very low starting price will go up, as you discovered for yourself.

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/08/2017 14:10

Agree with Sloane. Buy it now, state the price you want, people are either prepared to pay it or not. Sometimes if I am feeling generous, or really want to see the back of something, I will include best offer, but so many people take the piss when you allow that feature. My stuff sits around sometimes for months, sometimes longer, but I have plenty of storage space and would soon that than sell something cheap. (1p? I don't know how, in all seriousness, anyone had the nerve to complain about the p&p)

But yes, eBay is rubbish. I sell homemade items. I know technically I should be on etsy, but I actually have more success on eBay.

KitKat1985 · 17/08/2017 14:13

Yeah maybe 'buy it now' is a better way to do it.

I'm not complaining about selling the dresses for 1p per se by the way (I took a risk, it backfired, totally my own fault). But I couldn't believe someone would quibble the P&P when I was essentially giving them the bloody dresses for free.

It just seems to me in general a much better place to be a buyer than a seller. People only want to pay ridiculously low prices, and Ebay always seems to take the buyers side.

I do think it has gone downhill. I can't be bothered with it now at all. Too much effort for very long gain.

Letstryagainshallwe · 17/08/2017 14:14

Best offier is rubbish when I put it on people were offering me half the price! How is that a 'best offer'

thetwocultures · 17/08/2017 14:18

I always sell on shpock. Collection only. Start off the price a bit higher because I'm prepared to lower it as people always haggle. And I have them minimum I will take at the back of my mind.
Only things I've posted were small items such as clothes only if buyer paid upfront.

yawningbear · 17/08/2017 14:34

I only ever sell stuff on Gumtree for collection only, as there is no charge and no hassle with postage. Still have to deal with folk not showing up or making ridiculously cheeky offers but if you can put up with that it does make a little bit of money. I go through spells of posting lots of things, mainly baby/child related but haven't used EBay to sell for a few years now because it was such a hassle and hardly any profit once they take the commission.

MadamPince · 17/08/2017 14:47

I did a big declutter a while back, mainly handbags, and have another lot ready to be listed but I just can't be bothered with the faff.

My worst one was a buyer who left negative feedback, claiming a (brand new!) item showed lots of signs of use. When I looked at the review more closely I realised she'd posted it before she had even received the item.

Left a complaint with eBay but you don't get anywhere with that.

DownstairsMixUp · 17/08/2017 14:52

It used to be fab for selling but I agree it's rubbish now. They are far too greedy with the fees now to and filter messages to make sure you don't sell an item outside eBay.

WhySunShines · 17/08/2017 14:59

I quite like it still. I always start something as an auction for the price I would like to get for it. That means if I've under estimated the value I will get more. If it doesn't sell I stick it on as a buy it now. I have got around 2 grand this past year by decluttering

19lottie82 · 17/08/2017 15:08

EBay's a great selling platform but you need to understand how it works and their rules and also that most of the time you won't succeed in selling things for what you think they are "worth".

Sorry OP but starting an auction at 1p is just daft, unless you're perfectly happy for it to sell for that amount.

Also eBay isn't the best for collection only items only IMO, due to chances of being ripped off (unless you are totally clued up on how to protect yourself, i.e. NEVER take PayPal) and also people winning items and then changing their mind or realising that it's too far for them to pick up. For too large to post items I stick to Gumtree.

GlitterGlassEye · 17/08/2017 15:09

Yeah it used to be good for selling bundles of kids clothing. One time the winning bidder asked me to post it 1st class instead of 2nd. I said yes, I'll invoice you the adjustment and she wrote me a cheeky email wondering why I wouldn't just sent it 1st class out of the goodness of my heart Hmm. I'm selling clothes on eBay to make money you knob, not do you a complete fucking stranger a favour at my own expense.

I cancelled the item and relisted. That way she couldn't leave me negative feedback.

Don't bother too much now as PayPal will demand a random amount of money from me every few months.

worridmum · 17/08/2017 15:16

Dont use ebay or paypal to sell anything as they 99% of the time side with the buyer even if you do everything by the book they often get to keep the item and get a full refund.

MikeUniformMike · 17/08/2017 15:16

It is good way of decluttering because while you are photographing it and listing it you sort of say goodbye to it.
It is demoralising to get very little for something and have to post it, but at least it's gone.
I list things as collection only and it's a PITA if they send a man in a van who turns up at 11pm not 6 pm.
Ebay favours the buyers not the sellers.

Decaffstilltastesweird · 17/08/2017 15:19

I wouldn't say YABU, but I do like eBay a lot. It took me some time to get used to it, but I've had great success buying and selling on there. When I've had issues in the past, eBay have been brilliant at resolving them.

I've had the "I haven't received it" line, once before. I'd wager they were taking the piss, but who knows? Anyway, I was able to recoup my costs from Royal Mail on that one.

It maybe isn't the site for everyone, but I happen to really like it.

I've had limited success with selling clothes. I've noticed a lot just don't sell. Especially those with poor / not enough / unclear photos. I've rarely sold second hand clothes on there for any real money tbh. Only a surplus wedding dress (I bought three on eBay and only used one) and a Lindybop cotton dress have ever made any decent money for me. Also a maternity tankini, which for some reason sold for more than I originally paid!

BrawneLamia · 17/08/2017 15:28

I start my listing at a price I would be happy to accept, so that any extra is a bonus. Other items I stick on as buy it now. I list items for a minimum of £10, otherwise it's not worth the effort, anything which I don't think will sell for that much goes straight to the charity shop

Rollercoaster1920 · 17/08/2017 15:38

I prefer to give stuff away on Freecycle than use e bay. A lot less stress.

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 17/08/2017 15:44

I don't sell on eBay anymore but dp will occasionally but more often than not the buyers will say it hasn't arrived, despite being signed for, or had damage that was never there. He photos everything to cover hinself but it's pointless. They get a refund and they get to keep what they've 'bought'. He doesn't sell cheap crap either. Don't know why he bothers.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 17/08/2017 15:51

It's really gone downhill. The entire site is flooded with junk and there are so many major businesses on it, it's hard to see decent bargains from private sellers.

MadamPince · 17/08/2017 15:52

Btw I post everything 2nd class recorded, this way p&p isn't too outrageous but I have peace of mind.

Interesting hearing about people's pricing tactics, I always just stick stuff on with a starting price of 99p. Confused

Piffpaffpoff · 17/08/2017 15:58

8/9 years ago, I was selling bundles of 2/3 Next baby tops and getting £6-7 for them.

Now, I only sell good, branded stuff, I don't bother with high street like Gap or Next and I do buy it now for the price I want to get and just leave it sitting there til it sells. The majority of my stuff goes to the charity shop now tbh.

bellaboo101 · 17/08/2017 15:58

I sent a young lady a really distinctive blazer which she claimed to have never received (my own fault for not doing it as signed for) I obviously refunded.
...she had it up for sale a week later. Envy

eBay did nothing. She left me a horrible negative too.

Put me off eBay for good!
