To just get a big bag of chicken nuggets?

We're off on a self catering holiday to Spain on Tuesday and won't have much money to eat out. I love to cook though so it's not that that's the issue, kind of looking forward to the amazing food markets, cooking lots of fresh fish etc. My kids (especially my DSCs) are incredibly fussy eaters and I just can't be doing with cooking different things or restricting myself and DH to the very narrow range of things they'll all eat and fretting over what I can actually make, putting up with the moaning, sullen faces when they're pushing something trouble their plates. AIBU if i just go to the supermarket on day 1 and get a big bag of frozen chips and chicken nuggets and just say 'if you don't like what I'm cooking any night, that's your dinner'.

Yanbu

How old are they? Could they also make their own sandwiches?

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 17/08/2017 11:46

Nope, go for it. If they're old enough, I'd add "and you're cooking it" but then I refuse to cook separate meals unless there's a medical or dietary need for it (mean mum! Grin)

Shoxfordian · 17/08/2017 11:46

Not unreasonable at all

EsmeWeatherwax · 17/08/2017 11:49

Go for it. Cooking is a nightmare with fussy kids.

Fianceechickie · 17/08/2017 11:50

Lol! They're 10, 12 and 13!

MrsMotherHen · 17/08/2017 11:51

nope your on holiday i let mine eat what they like on holiday 😊

QuackDuckQuack · 17/08/2017 11:53

Are you definitely getting an oven? Lots of SC places don't have them.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 17/08/2017 11:53

God this drives me mad - all that fresh food, local as hell and just lovely.

I have one who will eat mostly everything (asks for oysters but won't eat mushrooms) and the eldest who will only things that have been processed to within an inch of its life, views fruit as an agent of evil.

Both weaned the sameConfused

Yeah if they are old enough they can cook the nuggets - hopeful they will get bored (hungry)

Fianceechickie · 17/08/2017 11:54

I was the same needmoresleep! Until I got my DSCs and now my DS is fussyish too. I was determined not to have fussy eating kids but then fate gave me some! Some of it is genuine (thankfully mild) allergy issues but most is just 'I don't like it' or they suspect it causes tummy ache. It all adds up to a very narrow menu and a lot of angst!

Oh god groan I really feel for you. I love food, trying new things and cooking however my oh and his family are the plainest eating people iv ever met. It's so bloody depressing. Yanbu!! Enjoy your holiday how you would like it and as long as they are all fed you have done your job.

oldlaundbooth · 17/08/2017 11:58

Just do it.

QuiteChic · 17/08/2017 11:59

Definitely make them cook it themselves at that age, and they should wash up and put away too ! It's your holiday as well isn't it ? Make sure your DH is on the same page before you go, and do NOT under any circumstances back down. Rinse and repeat - "It's my holiday too" !

When my DC were going through their fussy phase (similar age) I cooked sausages for tea every night for a week (as that was their stock reply when you asked them what they wanted), by Monday they had decided that actually they did like variety and that I was quite a good cook and that I wasn't poisoning them ! Grin

Fianceechickie · 17/08/2017 12:05

Love the sausages plan! And yes, I will make them do it themselves I think. I am emboldened!

oh so pleased to hear i'm not the only one.
my kids live on ham & cheese baguettes when we're away. and chips. i cut up the odd apple to keep them from decomposing inside.
drives me bloody crazy.

we want to go to new york. the kids are super keen. i've refused to book it until they eat properly, no way are we going to be eating at the likes of the cheesecake factory all holiday to ensure they eat

Fianceechickie · 17/08/2017 12:21

lol! I'd struggle even with that DSS won't eat cold cheese! Ham baguette for lunch then and nuggets and chips for tea! Will also help with the constant questions about what's for lunch/tea/breakfast!

Nocamping in fairness it will cost you a fortune to eat properly / healthy in NYC for so many of you! We live on McDonald's and pizza when we go with the kids!

Looneytune253 · 17/08/2017 12:25

Yabu if it was me and they didn't like what I was cooking they'd just do without. Yabu to provide junk food instead imo

Stripyhoglets · 17/08/2017 12:26

Yes do it - we used to do similar with added frozen peas. But my kids quite like grilled meat and fish as long as it's plain so not quite as restricted.

Stripyhoglets · 17/08/2017 12:26

Oh and i love food shopping abroad!

BannedFromNarnia · 17/08/2017 12:29

Go for it. Basic food they can help themselves to, and you cook whatever glories you like.

hellokittymania · 17/08/2017 12:29

Go for it! I lived on chicken nuggets as a teenager and I still like them. Have them yesterday, will probably have them today or tomorrow, depending on what I do for my birthday today. I'm trying to re-write two essays, so nothing special going on and I'm doing what is convenient.

Fianceechickie · 17/08/2017 12:31

I would do that looney if they were all mine but two are DSCs and it'll cause trouble with their mum!

OP posts:
Looneytune253 · 17/08/2017 14:10

How will it cause trouble with their mum if you cook them a lovely meal and they choose not to eat it? If they say you starved them or whatever just tell her there was plenty of food available they just didn't eat it. Your DH should be thinking about this more too.

Miserylovescompany2 · 17/08/2017 14:32

It's a holiday for everyone at the end of the day - if that means getting a humongous bag of chicken nuggets then so be it - nowt worse than miserable kids on holiday - go for it - enjoy your food - if they are tempted by the delicious aroma then all the better...

PandorasXbox · 17/08/2017 14:34

My friend used to take tons of bacon and cheese in her suitcase because that's all her kids would eat and her FIL got it cheap!
