Ok, so long story short I work in banking. There's a city close nearby that I want to apply for (actually already sent the CV and spoke to the manager there- area manager) butttt! my manager doesn't know. Obviously the manager from the other branch will need to speak to my manager and get references probably (a bit worried about that because she is mean and imposing)

What do I do? Go tell her (if so, what?) or wait until she finds out as I don't think it's her business really?

Please advise. Thanks! Smile

Ask to have a chat and explain? Best to do this first. Good luck

Heratnumber7 · 17/08/2017 09:18

They shouldn't ask for references until after they've offered you a job.
Job offer would say "dependant on references and background checks".
That gives you the opportunity to decline an offer without your current employer being made aware that you're looking round.

lunaysol3828 · 17/08/2017 09:35

@Heratnumber7 even if the employer is basically the same, but different city?

@monkeysox what would you say?

Hi bren can I have a word please?
I thought I'd better let you know I've approached the other office regarding a vacancy. They will probably be contacting you for a reference and I wanted you to be aware first.

lunaysol3828 · 17/08/2017 10:31

@monkeysox that's perfect, thank you!

Did you do it?!

Heratnumber7 · 17/08/2017 15:42

What do you mean by "the employer is basically the same"?

BikeRunSki · 17/08/2017 15:47

If it's an internal move, will they actually follow up references?

Iamtheresurrection · 17/08/2017 16:06

In my company you have to ask your manger for permission to apply for an internal vacancy. There will also be a formal "reference" type process. (Also FS)

Heratnumber7 · 17/08/2017 16:09

Ah, hasn't realised that.
The hiring manager may well get some "informal feedback" from current manager Sad

lunaysol3828 · 17/08/2017 18:46

@monkeysox she wasn't in today! First thing tomorrow morning

@Heratnumber7 Well I certainly hope for no "informal feedback" Smile
