Not an emergency, but also not a wait weeks appointment

This is more of a wwyd rather then a an aibu.

The HV wants my lb to go to the gp to talk to them about the possibility of him having reflux (an idea also shared by salt). Now I don't particularly think
Its an issue that requires a same day appointment, but at the same time for a routine appointment your waiting a month+. The situation is definitely worsening despite being 1 and eating solids, he's also all dairy free and we're doing everything else right to minimise it. So my question is, would you wait the month+ for a routine since his weight is yet to be impacted, or get him in for a same day appointment to try get the issue resolved?

Id ask for same day as it can be very uncomfortable for them.

littlemisssweetness · 16/08/2017 17:52

@HaPPy8 that's the thing, he doesn't present as a typical reflux baby at all! There's no cry or acting uncomfortable as such, just frequent hiccups at 'wet' breathing (if that makes sense?) which is why think it might be reflux, and why I'm struggling so much trying to decide 😂

He's an infant, I'd be very surprised if they won't see him on the day

Floralnomad · 16/08/2017 17:57

Call and ask for a phone consultation , if the dr thinks he needs to see him he will ask you to go in after .

Get a same day appointment; I've had that issues where I've felt bad because haven't felt it was an emergency but also couldn't wait two weeks. It's not your fault that the system forces you to do that.

Ohyesiam · 16/08/2017 18:04

As greed an infant they need to see him asap

ThePinkOcelot · 16/08/2017 18:06

It's really getting dire isn't it?!
I rang up GP w/c 31 July asking for an appointment w/c 21 Aug and was told earliest appointment was 6 September. What an absolute joke!
I would take a day appointment for him, he's only a baby.
Hope you get him sorted.

skyzumarubble · 16/08/2017 18:07

I'd take the emergency appointment.

RiverTam · 16/08/2017 18:10

Non-emergency appts at our GP can be a week's wait but young children are always seen same day. So I'd take the appt they're offering you.

RiverTam · 16/08/2017 18:11

Basically, with an young child it's not an emergency appointment, it's the standard appointment for a child of that age.

katycb · 16/08/2017 18:21

Have you mentioned his age and the reason when booking appointment? Some gps receptionists are s bit militant maybe ring back and say when your appointment is and saying that as ds is only 1 it is hard to tell how much it is affecting him. They might give u one sooner. My surgery sees under 1s the same day and under 5s within a week of possible.

littlemisssweetness · 16/08/2017 18:28

@katycb yup they know his age, he's well known to out gps anyway as has a complex medical history, they've booked him in for a routine appointment for the end of September but said I could try ringing tomorrow to get him into a same day appointment if I wanted.

I just don't understand how people can be expected to wait so long to see a doctor - it's dire. Nothing except the most routine of reasons could require such a wait.

I think you'd be better off getting same day.

I am very fortunate - my current and last surgeries are excellent and I am able to book with a variety of doctors within a week. I have so much sympathy for people who have trouble seeing a doctor.

littlemisssweetness · 16/08/2017 19:08

@Moanyoldcow it's insane how long you have to wait- it's even worse by the fact the prefer him to see the same person because of his history. I think I will just get him in tomorrow, that way if they want to try meds he'd have been on them a month before seeing the consultant

I've gone into work a few times with something urgent but not requiring a full day off (lump in breast, severe earache etc) and I can see the amazement from colleagues when my doctor calls back and asks me to go in that day (usually within a few hours). No one believes that can be the norm but I suspect the area I live in means there is no recruitment shortage, a reasonably affluent and well-educated patient population and I know those things make a big difference. It's extremely unfair.
