How do people lose weight so fast?

WhereDoesThisRoadGo · 16/08/2017 16:53

Inspired by another thread where the poster wrote "I lost 3 stone in 3 months". I get how to lose weight, but what methods are people using to lose that much that quickly? If I eat 1200 cals and burn 200-500 per day three times per week, I would still only lose 2lb per week. And be constantly exhausted.

A bottle of wine Boysa

That's what 600 calls looks like. fags are calorie free

BeepBeepMOVE · 16/08/2017 23:58

How tall are you? 1200cals shouldn't be making you exhausted.

I lost hugely and quickly with exante, 600cals a day. 1300cals is what i eat normally to maintain, anymore and i start to get fat.

600cals in food is doable. Breakfast on grapefruit, Big chicken salad for lunch with only lemon juice as dressing and fish and green veg for dinner. Would be some cals leftover for a few very light snacks and maybe handful of strawberries for pudding.

Great low cal lunch is courgetti with a simple tomato pasta sauce. I really like it, can add chicken or small amount of strong cheese.

MissAlabamaWhitman · 17/08/2017 00:24

Honestly, it's easier to starve than to subsist on 600 cals.

At least when fasting you're not hungry.

If you're going very low cal then at least balance it by upping your protein.

1300 cals to maintain? Are you 4'10?

WonderLime · 17/08/2017 04:28

600 cals (approx):

Breakfast - Porridge made with water. Small tsp honey to sweeten.

Lunch - soup (tomato and basil; vegetable (not cream of), types). No bread.

Dinner - chicken/ fish salad. Plenty of salad leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, etc. No dressing. No carbs.

Doable if you are doing a 5/2 diet - not sustainable if you are trying to consist of 500-600 calories a day as you won't have enough energy to function properly and you'll just be miserable.

As for quickest weight loss - 1st, 2lbs in a week after being bedridden with some kind of virus. I couldn't eat for a week and completely emptied my stomach. It was awful. I did keep 75% off it though as I immediately started a new diet/lifestyle when I had recovered.

Best weight loss - 50lbs over 10 months. It was slow going but I kept it off for 6 years up until now (just had first baby). That was calorie counting between 1200-1600 per day + odd 'cheat meal' once or twice per week (ordering pizza, etc).

I'm going to o with MissAlabamas menu of a bottle of wine today lol

Thanks WonderLime for the menu suggestion

"If I eat so few calories my body goes into starvation mode and I can't lose any weight at all."

I thought 'starvation mode' has been shown to be a myth now?

Ginlovinglady · 17/08/2017 08:12

No Carbs
Fasting
Track everything on my fitness pal
Walking and other excercise

CazY777 · 17/08/2017 08:22

Only things that have worked for me are emotional stress (being dumped by long term boyfriend) and then marathon training (marathon training on its only didn't work the second time I did it), and illness/pregnancy sickness.

Peanutbuttercheese · 17/08/2017 08:31

Becoming ill, I weighed 9st but by dangerous ill health I was suddenly 7st, in around a month.

I went to a talk about metabolism, health and weight recently.

The guy was pretty darn harsh about how people abuse their bodies. He lectured us on the quality of food eaten and recommended organic and healthy and no carbs at all in the evening. He also said it's for life and to never use the word diet and to use healthy eating and that all actual diets were basically horseshit. He also had harsh word for any detoxing plans and said to get a body cleaner and therefore less bloated etc takes months of healthy eating. He was also of the three times exercise per week for 30 mins without fail.

Sirzy · 17/08/2017 08:37

I think aiming for fast loss is often pointless as in most cases it won't stay off long term. For most people slow and steady is much better as you make changes which are sustainable long term.

I lost 7 stone it took 3 years but I have maintained my weight (and massively improved my fitness) for over 2 years now.

FindoGask · 17/08/2017 08:40

To be fair, no carbs in the evening and 'getting your body cleaner' are basically horseshit concepts too.

It's very hard to separate the horseshit from the useful information these days - there's kernels of truth in what many of these people say but you really have to dig for them.

OwlinaTree · 17/08/2017 08:44

I'm assuming the 600cals a day person is joking. That's not normal.

OwlinaTree · 17/08/2017 08:46

I can see it being doable as part of 5:2 or something but every day of your life?

BlondeB83 · 17/08/2017 10:31

I lost about 4 stone in 5 months in my early 20s, it was based on a very restricted, low carb diet and about 6 hours of high impact cardio every week. I kept it off for a few years but have put about half back on. Thinking of doing the Dukan diet soon.

NewPapaGuinea · 17/08/2017 11:35

Eat more and move more. As long as you're in a small calorie deficit you'll lose weight. Restricting calories too much is miserable and unsustainable. Better to create the deficit through exercise.

BlondeB83 · 17/08/2017 13:30

I think you mean eat less, move more. Yes, that's the basics of it but rapid weight loss requires drastic action. I'm not saying it's good for you though!

NewPapaGuinea · 17/08/2017 13:48

Nope, defo eat more as many people chronically undereat and if you combine that with exercising your deficit will be too great. People often try and combine the two (eat less calories, but also burn off more) and then feel miserable and then binge.

As long as your energy expenditure is higher than your intake you'll be good.

shouldaknownbetter · 17/08/2017 19:24

I lost 10lbs in 2 weeks on a high fat ketosis diet. Barely any carbs though. It stayed off for 3 months and would have stayed off longer, but I started pigging out again so have put it back on. That wasn't the diet's fault though.

abigailgabble · 17/08/2017 20:57

in my life? the first time extreme stress, the second breastfeeding

Spangles1963 · 17/08/2017 21:42

I know of 3 people who live in my local area who have lost a lot of weight in a short (e.g. 8 stone in 10 months). Every single one of them has claimed that they did it with diet and exercise. But a little bird in the know told me that they had all had gastric bypass ops done, and had only admitted it to their closest friends. I see no shame in having a gastric bypass,or any sort of bariatric surgery in order to lose weight, and certainly no shame in admitting to it.

PumbletonWakeshaft · 18/08/2017 09:07

I have had success with low sugar/low carb, losing a stone in a month etc, but I do find it hard to sustain long term as you need time to prep and time to eat (you can't shovel in mounds of veg the way you can a quick sandwich!). Ultimately you need a significant calorie deficit for rapid weight loss.

I do find that doing exercise makes me want to eat more healthily, and of course helps with those excess calories if your 600 (Confused) a day is becoming tricky. I'm currently swimming 3 times a week, as high intensity as I can which is best for weight loss (no gentle cruising with a leisurely breast stroke). A really good app for tracking calories and progress is MyNetDiary.
