To go mental at my landlord

I currently private rent. My landlord was coming round today with a decorator to get a price for some work.
I left the bedroom doors closed and I have arrived home to find them all open and some cupboard doors have been left ajar.

The decorating is not getting done in any of the bedrooms and he did not ask permission to enter the bedrooms. I gave himself permission to come in while I was out for the decorator to give him a price.

Aibu to text him and say from now on I want permission to enter any rooms and I want to be present as I feel my privacy is being invaded and I don't want my bedroom doors left open?
I didn't realise he was doing an all house snoop.
I actually find him incredibly nosey.
I have a feeling he will come up with the excuse that he was getting quotes for the bedrooms however this was never mentioned and I gave no permission to enter the bedrooms and surely the closed doors was a massive hint.
Clearly he has no issue with me knowing he was in the bedrooms as he didn't close the doors again but he has been in my cupboards which is nothing to do with him.

I think once you gave permission for him to access , it applied to the whole property. By all means ask that in future such visits arranged at your convenience so you can be there.

I had this. We were due to move out in a few weeks and he left all the cupboards etc opened and texted moaning that we hadn't defrosted the freezer yet. Then because hr was so 'worried' about the state of the place demanded a 'pre inspection inspection'!

He's not allowed to go snooping. If it were me but I'm really arsey I would send a semi passive aggressive text along the lines of 'didn't realise the decorator would need to see inside my cupboards. You do realise the law states this is my home and I'm entitled to 'quiet enjoyment' of my home without feeling like my privacy is being invaded'.

Maybe soften that when you cool off but that's what the law states. It's essentially harassment.

'I came home to find bedroom doors and wardrobe doors left open, I believe you were getting a quote for decorating downstairs. I feel you have invaded my privacy. From now on I will not be allowing anybody to enter without me being present.'

Redadmiralflyer · 16/08/2017 14:41

That's the thing I think he did do an inspection but no mention of it at all.
I am angry so I'm going to wait until I do off as you say. I am decluttering at the moment and have a pile of binbags and linen in the bedroom ready to take to tip. If I had known there was going to be an inspection I would have taken it earlier ffs.

The decorator was getting quotes for the hallway and landing so no need to enter bedrooms. He's had a proper snoop and wants me to know. I can't get over the brass neck of him.

I had a problem landlord. He used to come in and snoop while I was at work. I set up a spare iPhone as a camera and I stood at work with friends - self employed this was fine - as he snooped through everything, broke something and hid it.

Allthebestnamesareused · 16/08/2017 15:28

If he is doing the landing maybe he did need to open the bedroom doors to check whether the glossing would be required on both sides of the door and the door jamb and architrave.

However, the cupboards are a different kettle of fish. Out of order.

Yabu to think that permission can be given for individual rooms, yanbu to expect a certain level of privacy , especially when the reason for the visit was a quote in a hallway.

You could send a casual message enquiring as to why the "decorator" needed access to these rooms/cupbards , is he planning on a larger amount of redecorating.

It doesn't sound too serious, there are far worse LLs out there!

(Like my DDs previous LL. She strategically placed some crumbs behind a storage jar. When she came in again she told my DD she wasn't keeping it clean enough as the crumbs she had put there, were still there!
p.s. This is just one thing out of hundreds)

So opening a few doors is not a problem AFAIC. When someone comes to give a quote for painting, the contractor might say they'll do the whole flat and would therefore need to look in all rooms

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 16/08/2017 16:03

I would just make it to the point...

I gave you permission to come into the hall on x date with the decorator so they could give a quote.

I did not expect my bedroom to be accessed and cupboards to be inspected. I regard this as intrusive.

To clarify, in future I want requests in advance and in writing. I want to be here for any future access.

quercuscircus · 16/08/2017 17:02

YANBU - you gave permission for a particular purpose and it is rude to abuse this by snooping elsewhere. It makes me very angry when landlords take liberties like this.

rousette just because it could have been worse, does not mean it does not matter!

It would be interesting to get a legal opinion on granting access for a specific purpose and for this to result in extra and unrelated actions or inspections.

However, I have come to expect this type of behaviour though so I would never allow any visits without my being there - and without having everything shipshape. You can almost guarantee LLs will use the opportunity to ask to "just use the loo" even if only doing outdoor work, or to use the opportunty to inspect something else.

Even nice LLs can get carried away with enthusiasm or wanting to make improvements and ask to access to extra rooms while they are there, so it pays to have the whoole house ready just in case! Otherwise you have to have the "er, um, er I haven't made the bed" conversation and that makes me feel like a naughty teenager Blush

I agree that you should say you felt your trust was abused as per devilsavocado and others, and say you want to be there next time.

Be prepared for the LL not to give a shit or to serve you notice though Sad

If you don't have a plan B then get your ducks in order before you complain.
