What! Thanks for the heads up. Will spend them points asap and boycott Sad

eirrar · 16/08/2017 02:57

I won't be shopping at Sainsbury's any more then. Shame.

tangledup123 · 16/08/2017 03:36

Sainsbury's is just one of around 500 retailers that Nectar are linked with. Are you also going to boycott eBay, Argos, easyJet, Debenhams, Pizza Express, Waterstones, BT, Accessorize, Next, Apple, Virgin Trains, Sky and every other company on this list?: www.nectar.com/brands

I also don't really get why the people cutting up their Nectar cards are happy to shop at supermarkets that sell the Daily Mail. Or watch TV channels that advertise the Daily Mail. Can someone explain why this Nectar partnership is so much worse?

functionAndMethod · 16/08/2017 06:17

Almost as if it's a little showboating, eh tangledup Smile

I also wonder if people do cut up their cards and then boycott these shops. I doubt it.

TheNaze73 · 16/08/2017 06:24

function, I agree. Doubt it's many at all, in reality

MrsTrentReznor · 16/08/2017 06:33

fuction totally agree.
There's much more important things to get wound up about.
A loyalty card boycott is unlikely to hurt them much. Energy is best directed elsewhere if people feel that strongly about it. (But they don't outside of forums generally...)

OliviaBenson · 16/08/2017 06:41

If you look at the comments on the nectar Facebook page it's illuminating. I think it's good that people are standing up to this. Poor choice nectar.,

Ah - the whataboutery thing people mention. Fuck that. There is hate and division about and the Daily Mail is part of that. I suppose people who aren't affected by hate just think 'whatabout' and ignore the hate caused.

If we ignore the Daily Mail, we'll end up with Trump politics getting more common here. And more division.

If the Daily Mail and its hate commentators can't change their spots, then companies who sell their soul to link with them will be boycotted by some. It may not do much but it's something. It might make them think about the publicity.

Of course some people don't give a shit about the divisive politics and hate of the Daily Mail. I bet some people agree with teir views and their dog whistle politics.

functionAndMethod · 16/08/2017 07:29

orlantina

"dog whistle politics"

"hate commentators"

orlantina · 16/08/2017 07:34

function

Yes - hate commentators. Hopkins being the main one.

Still, I suppose it's easy to ignore stuff if it is doesn't affect you.

MrsTrentReznor · 16/08/2017 07:38

function I think I love you!

DollyMcDolly · 16/08/2017 07:40

I won't be boycotting. I save up my nectar points and it buys my Christmas groceries and all the alcohol. Never need to spend a penny.

LaContessaDiPlump · 16/08/2017 07:44

Sorely tempted to spend all my points and never visit again. But they have lots of lovely vegan options in Sainsbos....

Everytimeref · 16/08/2017 07:48

Will cut up card as don't want my data used by that rag.
Will definitely think twice before shopping at any shop associated with nectar. I avoid using certain shops because of their tax position.
Boycotting does work.

Ifailed · 16/08/2017 07:54

I suspect Nectar knew there would be a backlash on line, probably hoping it will blow over. Sainsbury's advertise in the DM and hence finance it, as they do for the other extreme right-wing papers.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 16/08/2017 07:54

I love the way some MN posters try and control what other consumers buy.

Haven't you got something constructive to be doing like a protest to be making banners for? "Down with that sort of thing"

reportPost · 16/08/2017 07:55

no they don't work

LoveMyLittleSuperhero · 16/08/2017 07:56

I don't like the daily fail because of the anger it manages to bring out and the filth it prints, but, I feel sorry for all the Sainsbury's till workers getting lectures on the evil of the daily mail because their employer partners with a company who have partnered with them. Saw some shocking behaviour by people who wanted to "stop hate" last night when people were asked for their cards clearly till staff don't fall under the no hate umbrella as sub-human. Hopefully the majority of people will remember that chances are Sainsbury's staff aren't happy either but they can't afford to boycott their jobs.

Hopefully the current uproar, petitions and complaints will make them change their mind!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 16/08/2017 08:00

I'm happier to avoid rags like the Daily Mail than not.

I don't like their stance on politics. I don't boycott everything that is involved with them as that's quite tricky, but I'm happy to not use nectar.

People are allowed to not like what the papers print. It doesn't make anyone need a grip, it just means their views don't meet yours.

WinchestersInATardis · 16/08/2017 08:18

Yes. If you feel strongly about not wanting to fund the Daily Mail's hate speech, then voting with your wallet is a very easy way to do it.
It's really not that hard for me to get my bread and fruit from the local corner shop instead of Sainsbury's or go to an independent pub for dinner instead of pizza express etc etc.

WinchestersInATardis · 16/08/2017 08:21

And papers like the Daily Mail don't make much from sales. It's almost all advertising. Advertisers fund the DM.
If they think the extra business they get from the advert isn't worth the loss of business from associating with them, they'll advertise elsewhere.

Brittbugs80 · 16/08/2017 08:22

We do this too. We only use Sainsburys for top up shops and TU clothing when the sales are on but it soon builds up!
