To kiss dogs and cats

I am a sucker for a sweet dog and cat and will usually stroke them in the street if I can, providing their owners say it's ok. I give good cuddles and snuggles, but I also like to kiss their forehead and tell them what a cutie they are.

Aibu to kiss random animals? The dogs don't seem to mind but do you think the owners think I'm odd?

If I ask my cat for a kiss she touches her nose to mine, it is the cutest thing ever. I wouldn't miss a dog - they stink.

TheSparrowhawk · 16/08/2017 07:50

kiss

bengalcat · 16/08/2017 07:51

Safer and likely less germy to kiss a random animal than human

Gileswithachainsaw · 16/08/2017 07:56

I do Blush

Providing they are of course happy. Usually dogs cos cats well... They usually just come up for a stroke/pet then bugger off again Grin

But if I meet a dog who's a soppy old git, the kind who basically collapse on your feet or climb inside your clothes cos just being stroked isn't close enough then I'll usually give them a kiss and cuddle too..

MimsyBorogroves · 16/08/2017 08:02

I kiss my dogs between their eyes. Don't kiss the cats though.

Snogging a dog? Well, here snogging is with tongues, so I'm going for no.

stumblymonkeyagain · 16/08/2017 08:05

I kiss my own cats mainly against their will a lot but I don't think I ever kiss anyone else's.

Isn't that like cheating? Aren't you betraying your own pets? Shock

stumblymonkeyagain · 16/08/2017 08:06

I sort of think it's like babies...I'd kiss my own baby but as much as I'd hold someone else's I don't think I'd kiss it Confused

Coffeetasteslikeshit · 16/08/2017 08:12

I'd love it if you kissed my dogs. They're Staffies so get plenty of dirty looks and I get quite anxious sometimes when people are walking towards us, so if you loved them enough to kiss them, I'd love you forever!

MrsMozart · 16/08/2017 08:13

I'd find it odd if someone else kissed my dogs when we're out and about. They're well behaved and like strokes, but they're all guard or herding breeds and as such only like a certain level of strange people in their space.

One of the cats is rescue. Whilst she might be okay with a stroke even we wouldn't try and kiss her. She'd panic and either bed upset (bad) or do what she thought she needed to do to get you off her (that could also be quite bad).

LinoleumBlownapart · 16/08/2017 08:16

bbpp you kiss chickens Grin

I kiss my dog, but I really shouldn't! I don't think YABU, I think cats and dogs do understand a kiss, just as we understand a face lick or a bum shoved in our direction. They may all like it to different degrees, just like some humans hate dog licks and cats' bums. But they'll know your being affectionate. You'd be welcome to kiss my dog but at your own risk as he's a scabby little morsal whose overdue a bath.

NoSquirrels · 16/08/2017 08:56

Wouldn't usually put my face close enough to a random cat or dig in the street to kiss them, no. Strokes/fussing yes, but putting your face that close to an animal you don't know well seems foolhardy to me. Plus usually have the DC with me and teaching responsible interaction.

Our animals or family/good friends- sure. Cat 1 gives you a face kick if she's feeling lovely, Cat 2 is a head butt/nose rub type, and both tolerate snuggle bury-your-face hugs from family but wouldn't from anyone else.

NoSquirrels · 16/08/2017 08:57

Ha! dig = dog, of course.

And Cat 1 gives a face lick- I've never been kicked by a cat to my knowledge!

Zaphodsotherhead · 16/08/2017 09:02

I kiss my own dogs and cats and my partner's dog. Unfortunately a lot of dogs don't like having human faces thrust at them and find it threatening. My young dog is one - I can kiss her because she understands me, anyone else trying it would lose their nose...

stayathomegardener · 16/08/2017 09:52

I'm not sure they enjoy being kissed if they are not used to it.
Our dog always used to sink his head down when DD kissed the top of it. I don't think he found it unpleasant just a bit puzzling in the general game. Now he is older he anticipates the kiss (especially if pre warned with kiss noises) and bumps his head up to meet them.

ClawsForThought · 16/08/2017 10:00

Apart from my own, I kiss the neighbour's cats on their little furry heads. They don't seem to mind as they're used to me - I look after them when said neighbours are on holiday. Grin

StumpyScot92 · 16/08/2017 10:29

I kiss both my cat and dog on top of their heads. I also kiss any animals in family or friends homes when I'm cuddling them.

I volunteer in rescue and once I've assessed and spent some time with a dog I would and have done it with them too (style much sooner than others, had big abused mastiffs fall asleep cuddling on to my lap and chest within an hour of meeting me and I get too emotional 😂). But I wouldn't do it with random dogs purely because I know some dogs hate faces near them and might be lovely getting petted but liable to turn etc. Cats are a slightly more controlled risk I think 😂

My cat is a bit toooo fond of affection and if she doesn't get it in the middle of the night when she demands it she goes in for a snog licking your lips... I love her to bits but that gives me the heebies haha

brayd · 16/08/2017 10:32

I kiss my dogs more than my partner GrinI kiss all animals that I've either had as pets or work with, rats, hamsters, hedgehogs, lizards etc, just can't help myself!

Nomoreboomandbust · 16/08/2017 10:36

I snog my dog and cat more than my kids and dh too. Grin

You could snog my dog she loves fuss. The cat maybe not.

KC225 · 16/08/2017 10:38

We kiss our pets all the time in our house. When my son was 3 the local children's centre had one of those 'animal man' visits. He had had a skunk and asked if anyone wanted to stroke it. My son leapt and kissed it on the head - he thought you did it with all pets.

MimsyFluff · 16/08/2017 11:10

I don't know how anyone can kiss other people's pets? Aren't you worried about catching worms? If anyone kissed the cat he'd claw your eyes out Grin they are for DD3 only only my DD's and one friend can fuss him

PersianCatLady · 16/08/2017 11:13

I miss my cat constantly because she comes over and taps me with her paw until I kiss her.

I kiss the golden retriever I look after a lot of the time even though it isn't mine because I love her, she doesn't mind at all
