Blood in faeces - wait and see?

Just wondered what the consensus was on this please? I've had bloody stool (turning the water red) for 5 days now. I don't have any symptoms, feel ok, tired but I have twin toddlers so probably that! My partner says it's serious and I should get to dr asap whereas I've said I want to give it a week or so to see if it resolves as I don't feel ill. AIBU? Thanks!

I would go to the doctors,it could be piles.
I'm sure blood from intestinal tract would be black stools.

Allthewaves · 15/08/2017 16:09

Compromise - phone doctor and have a chat.

Fekko · 15/08/2017 16:11

Oh dear sounds horrible! Make time for an appointment. It's probably piles but hey, neither of us are doctors!

Sunflow · 15/08/2017 16:13

I have suffered for many years from severe fissures and they often turn my stools bloody for days on end - but I know that's what causes it. As a general rule, bright red blood isn't something to worry too much about as it's likely to be caused by a tear or some other minor problem. Darker blood (rusty in colour / dark brown) is something you would need to speak to the doctor about asap as that can be a sign of something more serious. Might be worth taking more fibre to soften your stools and see if that helps. Even so, might be worth visiting your doctor if this continues.

Ropsleybunny · 15/08/2017 16:14

GO TO THE DOCTORS.

FooFighter99 · 15/08/2017 16:14

If it's bright red, its fresh from the anus (I have an anal fissure/plies so I get it a lot, but with stinging - sorry TMI!) and if it's darker and sticky its from further up (think intestines) and so could be signs of a serious problem.

I, however, am not medically qualified - so please do try and get to your GP asap. Alternatively, buy some pile cream and see if that helps.

Gudgyx · 15/08/2017 16:14

Yeah if it is bright red, it is more than likely piles. The turning the water red sounds like piles to me.

If you don't want to go to docs, how about just get some pile cream from the chemist and try that first? Intestinal tract blood tends to be darker, almost brown/black. Like the end of your period.

I've had crohns for years and now have a bag, quite familiar with bloody poo!

Barefootsummers · 15/08/2017 16:15

Thank you. Sorry, I know it's pretty horrible! At least it's not painful or anything. I want to give it a bit longer as I just remembered I had beetroot in a small smoothie a while ago, maybe it's that (optimistic!)

isupposeitsverynice · 15/08/2017 16:15

Piles seem like a likely culprit but do get to the doctors just in case as blood in toilet can sometimes be very serious.

Barefootsummers · 15/08/2017 16:16

Poor you, I've heard Chrohns is debilitating. The stool itself is dark and you can't see any blood but it's turning the water dark red so blood must be inside it if you see what I mean? I really am not enjoying examining my poo!

DON'T LISTEN TO ANYONE TRYING TO DIAGNOSE YOUR PROBLEM. GO TO THE FUCKING DOCTORS. YOU COULD HAVE BOWEL CANCER.

otterlynutty · 15/08/2017 16:26

I don't want to be scaremonger but PLEASE go to your GP and get it checked out, it could be something fairly simple such as piles but it could be something more serious like Ulcerative Colitis (although this is usually combined with diarrhea). I have UC and it took me months and months to get diagnosed, so if you don't think it is piles please be pushy with the GP.

otterlynutty · 15/08/2017 16:29

I'm not sure if you can edit so sorry - because UC is just the colon the blood can be bright red as it's lower down and fresher.

Hello @Gudgyx I have a bag too Flowers

Barefootsummers · 15/08/2017 16:32

Ok, dr it is then, thanks, prob the shove I needed.

Freezingwinter · 15/08/2017 16:34

You definitely need to go to the Dr today or tomorrow.

Imaginosity · 15/08/2017 16:34

Definitly go to the doctor. If its something serious you'll catch it as early as possinble and if its not too serious you'll have peace of mind and treatment.

ItsALardBaby · 15/08/2017 16:37

what ropsley said

Rainatnight · 15/08/2017 16:37

Definitely go to the doctor. It could be nothing. But it could be something. I've had three friends, in their thirties and early forties, become seriously ill with bowel cancer in just the past couple of years.

Barefootsummers · 15/08/2017 16:38

Going to call 8am tomorrow for a same day appointment (can't pre book as first pre book is in 3 weeks!)

brightlightceiling · 15/08/2017 16:41

Fresh blood you cannwait a bit or call the GP. Old (black) blood should be checked out earlier rather than later.

I have both piles and a fissure and it happens to me a couple of times a year, so don't panic.

Barefootsummers · 15/08/2017 16:47

This is probably a stupid question but does that mean that old blood would turn the water black not red? The poos are dark in colour with no visible blood i.e. I had a fissure years ago that was agony and the poo was streaked with blood, it's not this, but when the poo falls into the water it turns it red. Is this new or old blood?!

Flatpackback · 15/08/2017 17:00

Go to the Dr as soon as you can. I thought DP probably had piles. It was cancer. It was dealt with amazingly quickly and all is well now. You can't check this out yourself you need an expert.

Flatpackback · 15/08/2017 17:04

Forgot to say , fingers crossed for you. I really hope it's nothing worse than piles.

kali110 · 15/08/2017 18:26

Piles or fisure usually turn some of the stool a little dark, but will have visible blood.
If the stool are simply black then i'd see the doc.
Remember if you take any iron or iron supplements this can actually turn your stool black.

AlexaAmbidextra · 15/08/2017 19:37

Oh ffs. Would unqualified posters just stop giving incorrect advice. Angry. All this talk of red blood good, dark blood bad. It isn't true! Bright red blood can indicate bowel cancer. Any bleeding should be investigated.
