To use subtitles..:

..even though I am not deaf?
Dh is starting to get more and more annoyed at having them on during a film. I can see why he finds it distracting but if we are watching an American film I can't understand anything they say as they are so mumbly.

Who is BU?

The majority of subtitle users are not deaf. So YANBU

You might be being unreasonable for bothering your DH though.

Glowbug59 · 15/08/2017 15:54

I have them on all the time. Think it started when DS was a baby and we were in a small flat. DH doesn't mind. I don't think they're anything to get annoyed about.

LittleRedWagon1 · 15/08/2017 16:02

How would your DH react to them if you were deaf?

As a PP has said the majority of subtitle users are not deaf anyway. Would he rather you not be able to understand what was being said on the film/tv show?

I'm deaf, I use subtitles. I struggle greatly without them even when wearing my hearing aids, my DH will only watch films/tv shows with me that have subtitles as he knows how frustrating it is for me.

I often use them for the same reasons as you too.

Soundtracks are so shitty these days. Actors do not speak clearly and it irritates the crap out of me. That goes for whether it is in a film or on TV.

maddiemookins16mum · 15/08/2017 16:24

I watch most things with the subtitles, there's nothing wrong with my hearing but I just find it easier.

PollyFlint · 15/08/2017 17:13

I can sort of see why your DH finds them distracting but if you need them, I'd have thought he could manage to get used to it.

Out of interest though, although you're not deaf, have you had your hearing tested just to make sure all's well?

My DP turns films up way louder than I would have them because he struggles to hear the speech otherwise, but he's got slightly poor hearing.

PinkHeart5911 · 15/08/2017 17:14

I'd find them distracting so I couldn't watch a film with you!

Banchu · 15/08/2017 17:15

I have them on for everything (that has them) on Netflix etc as I find it easier to follow like that

LizB62A · 15/08/2017 17:16

I use mine most of the time now too.
I agree about the mumbling - Chicago PD doesn't have subtitles at the moment and I just can't watch it as I'd need to have it so loud to make out what they're saying that any other sounds (e.g. car chase, gunfire etc.) would be absolutely deafening.....

Vonklump · 15/08/2017 17:18

I use them all the time. I have turned into my mother.
What did they say? Did you hear that?

cricketballs · 15/08/2017 17:19

I started using them when DC were small and loud; gotten into the habit now and i get annoyed when they run slower!

Goldfishshoals · 15/08/2017 17:22

I often watch with subtitles if I'm watching TV alone, as otherwise I'm always turning down the volume for action scenes and up again for dialogue which gets tedious.

I don't when other people are watching as I feel bad about it, so I just put up with the loud bits being annoyingly loud.

I'm not sure either of you are being unreasonable - some sort of compromise where you watch some stuff with subtitles and some without?

NicolasFlamel · 15/08/2017 17:22

I'm so glad other people do this! I can't watch anything without subtitles. The actors all mumble or speak really fast or the soundtrack is too loud over everything or my kids are too loud etc. Luckily OH doesn't mind. Weirdly I started with the subtitles when my eye sight got a bit crap and I started needing glasses Confused

eddiemairswife · 15/08/2017 17:39

I started using them for Coronation Street, because the actress who played Katie(now in Portugal) spoke so indistinctly that I couldn't grasp what she was saying. I now use them for most dramas, but not for the news, as the newsreaders speak clearly.
I wish there was an equivalent for lighting; some directors specialise in deep gloom, and everything seems to happen in the dark.
