Child genius on ch 4 - wtf?! (Lighthearted)

Sleeplessinguiltyness · 14/08/2017 20:26

What is even the point?! I just don't get it!

Just seems like a load of pushy parents living through their kids, memorising random words I have never even heard of!

OP posts:
Booboobooboo84 · 14/08/2017 21:24

Madison may love nothing more than maths right now but just wait until she notices boys lol (or girls )

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2017 21:25

hmmmm, my dd has never lost her love for maths, for some it really is love forever.

Miloarmadillo1 · 14/08/2017 21:26

It's my guilty pleasure. WTF is wrong with Oscar's dad attending some bonkers competition when his wife is in intensive care? And why are Oscar's pupils so dilated?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/08/2017 21:32

I suspect Oscars Dad and Mum wanted to try and protect Oscar by trying to carry on with plans as best as possible. I can't believe you are commenting on a child's pupils.

People, these are just kids you are talking about. Friends and family will be reading this. Be nice, if you can't be nice, talk to a friend in real life, don't put it in the public domain.

QuimReaper · 14/08/2017 22:11

I've just watched it on +1. I wish last year's Mog were back on it, he was a star Grin

ImperialBlether · 14/08/2017 22:19

I'm not convinced being able to spell verbally is a sign of huge intelligence. Some people prefer to write it down - I think the scores would be very different then.

QuimReaper · 14/08/2017 22:20

I completely agree Imperial. The girl in the sudden death thing accidentally missed a letter rather than mis-spelling the word. It's just a party trick, a totally isolated skill.

youarenotkiddingme · 14/08/2017 22:37

I haven't watched this series (yet!)

I find some of the kids don't look like they actually want to be there.

However I'm laughing at rabbits and k (sorry on phone can't stroll back) Usain Bolts mum Grin

It drives me nuts anyway that spelling random words is considered genius. My ds (13 next week) could do gcse maths questions at 10 yo and drives his computer studies teachers nuts as he can 'just do it' and so they can't really teach him.
However he can't spell the first 200 HF words and still doesn't retain all phonics.

Strawberrybubblebath · 14/08/2017 22:42

Are they all children of MNers?

thatdearoctopus · 14/08/2017 22:53

It's not all about spelling though. Tonight's was just the first two rounds.

ImperialBlether · 14/08/2017 22:55

No, I know it's not all about spelling, but you see really bright kids failing at the spelling when it seems obvious they should go through.

ArcheryAnnie · 14/08/2017 23:03

It's bonkers, but no more bonkers than plenty of other hobbies kids with pushy parents have. I just hope none of the kids imagine it will do them any good as adults - it's hardly something you could put on your CV.

On the other hand, early experience in handling extreme pressure, media attention and high expectations will either serve these kids very well in later life or leave them with massive therapists bills.

waitforitfdear · 14/08/2017 23:10

rabbits wine on a Monday!!!! Brilliant idea just poured one that's why my kids were not geniuss.

See my dss could have done Pokemon questions and dds my little pony back in the day

Aeroflotgirl · 14/08/2017 23:15

I know Fabio and Olivia mum I'd awful, how can you pick over one child. Obviously you dont love your daughter enough, obviously she has a favourite child.

MorrisZapp · 14/08/2017 23:21

Utterly ghastly. The elimination show format is wildly unsuitable for children. Surely they could show bright kids doing amazing things without the weekly chop. Or do it bloody tastefully.

rabbitcakes · 14/08/2017 23:22

I have a toddler. I drink every night.

Still think the parents are nuts. And not in a good way.

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 14/08/2017 23:45

"Are they all children of MNers?"

😁😁 They must be. No one's kids on here are just above average intelligence. They are genuis's who have read the Hobbit at age 2. I saw one MNetter say her child was reading at 9 months once!

I'm rooting for Oscar because he wanted to enter himself. The others can fuck off. (Parents, not the kids fault). I have noticed a trend that it tends to be SAHMs? Are they just living through their child?

I said to DH I have the urge to tell our DCs they can do whatever the fuck they want tomorrow. We need to do some 11+ prep though 😁. This is DS's choice though and I'm very thankful for my DCs who are intelligent and not genius's.

EmmaJR1 · 15/08/2017 06:31

@Strawberrybubblebath 😂😂😂😂

MissionItsPossible · 15/08/2017 07:03

Did anyone else notice they kept pronouncing it 'haitch' Blush

AnotherLegoBrick · 15/08/2017 07:27

Some of the parents were awful. There are no words to describe Fabio and Olivia's mum - poor children. Tyler's mum wasn't much better - she won't easily forgive him for going out in the first round.

I've never seen it before and watched it with our children - they now realise that I am really not that bad!

thatdearoctopus · 15/08/2017 08:39

Mission, Yes, that was irritating me intensely too.

QuimReaper · 15/08/2017 11:02

Mission YES, my fists were curling in irritation at that!

Fabio and Olivia's mum seems absolutely unhinged. Her screaming with laughter into the camera over her "rooting for Fabio" thing was petrifying.

youarenotkiddingme · 15/08/2017 17:25

Fabio and Olivia's mum was on GMB today.

She spent the whole time laughing extraordinarily loud at ..... well nothing Grin

I kept thinking what a tit!

user7841794168 · 15/08/2017 17:35

The parents have never achieved anything and now want to push their children to go to Oxbridge by the time they are 7 so the parents have made up for their own shortcomings.

Except Oscar's Dad. He's alright.

ProfessorBranestawm · 15/08/2017 17:36

I hate the idea of this show and yet I can't stop watching it every year Blush
