Number plate emergency!

Shameless post for traffic..

DD just phoned from other side of country - she's been parked at a festival for 5 days, stopped at services and they've realised front number plate is missing. Assume someone took it Hmm Is it legal to drive? Can they get an emergency one? Currently on hold to RAC.

If it begins "YY18..." it is propped up against a wall down the road from my house (I guess it fell off a car transporter this morning).

It's always worth reporting found number plates to the police, especially if it's both front and back together.
Quite often burglars/car thieves will discard plates after a burglary/car theft.
If it's just the one plate, see if you can report via email - no need for 101 or 999

Are 18 plates even out yet?!

I would have assumed that they were personalised but you can't make your car seem newer than it is.

The listings says that they are fully legal, and there are also other suppliers. It would be much easier to get one off ebay and it arrive at your door tomorrow than trek off to Halfords or a local place.

Exactly. I bought mine from ebay when my Halfords one kept falling off! They are identical to Halfords' in every way and, if they were 'illegal', I'm sure this would have been brought to my attention in the two years I've been driving around with them on my car! They're bog standard number plates.

a YY18 plate won't exist yet. If it does, it's fake.

ILoveGrammar0 · 14/08/2017 18:43

Legal number plate suppliers must, by law, obtain proof of identity and proof of entitlement to use the particular vehicle registration number before issuing a number plate, and keep records of those for a minimum of three years.

If you are not asked for these when purchasing a number plate, then the number plate is illegal.

Just to reassure you the plate may not have been stolen. Not all are screwed on, some only use glue to stick them on. Mine fell off a few times before I got fed up and had it screwed in place.

As a back up make sure you keep the report details from the police just in case you get a random speeding ticket/traffic violation notice.
