To tell this woman to use BCC!

flimflaminurjams · 14/08/2017 14:58

She's just emailed me and a few others about an upcoming event.

To put in context its a local charity.

She's put all our email addresses in the To: box and now I can see everyone's name and email who has been invited.

Personal email address btw, not work related.

Shall I tell her to next time respect other people's data and use BCC or not?

Yes you should tell her. She might not know how to do it

AuntieStella · 14/08/2017 15:00

Yes, tell her.

It really should be the default to use BCC unless you know you are sending onky to a group who have consented for email address to be used freely within that group.

BenLui · 14/08/2017 15:01

Of course.

Snap8TheCat · 14/08/2017 15:04

School pta does this and the beaver leader. Drives me made. Some unscrupulous people then use them for selling and other reasons.

flimflaminurjams · 14/08/2017 15:07

Good. That's what I was thinking (and did wonder if she doesn't know how to do it - small charity etc)

I didn't want to come across as a "know-all", but it just annoys me that people are just so careless with these things.

I'd never even heard of using bcc until a few years ago and only by chance. That's mainly because most people don't send out mass emails to unconnected people unless part of a job in which case them have been told about company policy. Volunteers are unlikely to know unless told.

A quick email about accepted practise is in order.

Is it NCT?

Someone representing a charity should be supported by that charity to keep to the law. Anyone who collects personal data (in this case contact details) for a body like a charity, even small, becomes a data controller, and has a statutory duty to use that data only for the stated purposes and to protect it. The charity is theoretically liable for a five-figure fine for each breach - if you put ten people in the cc line that's ten breaches.

A local volunteer will be working under a committee who should have an IT/data representative and/or HQ support and guidance. She shouldn't be left to fuck it up on her own.

First time, cheerful email in reply.
Second time, terse reply copied to head office.
Thereafter refer to Information Commission.

God yes, reply to her and tell her!

randomchap · 14/08/2017 16:21

Make sure you use 'reply to all' when you reply to tell her.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 14/08/2017 16:27

Yes tell her. People who do that, and who use reply all inappropriately really piss me off.
