To not want a vet to operate on me ?

Seriously, this is what my elderly father thinks is the best way forward for me !

I have an injury that my father insists the Supervet could operate on and would cure me. Every single time I see him he mentions it. I have told him to contact him himself and see what he says but he's yet to do it.
AIBU to think that I'm not a bloody chihuahua ?

Missmoneyplant thanks for the laugh.
I had forgotten all about "My Lovely Horse".

Don't understand why supervet had and issue with ankle surgery when one of his rellys is a fine foot and ankle surgeon. Half his family do humans.

I gather he's a bit up himself but generally alright. Always very courteous when we give way to each other on a tricky local road Smile

The SuperVet is a referral centre, so you can't just rock up, you need to be referred from your own vet, op, who will have exhausted every other option. Grin

I think my dad is just getting old bless him. He means well though.

My favourite SuperVet has just died. I loved "All Creatures Great and Small" when I was little. My mother got a dog and insisted on driving 40 miles to a certain vet (rather than 12 miles to the nearest town) so that she could tell her friends that her vet was James Herriot's son.

Ahhh, Tristram Farnham.....

AngelaTwerkel · 14/08/2017 08:16

I think you should just say you went to the vet and they said no. Although they softened the rejection with a special rawhide doggie treat. Ruff!

VanillaSugar · 14/08/2017 08:16

Except it was Roberty Hardy (Siegfied) who has just passed away....

CremeFresh · 14/08/2017 08:21

This has made me laugh , I love the idea of my dad sitting on a chair with me looking disgruntled on the floor. Grin

I have relatives in a remote part of Zimbabwe. The local vet is also the local doctor. Human consultation in the afternoon and animal in the morning. He also performs surgery as well, everything from appendectomy to setting broken legs!

M5tothesouthwest · 14/08/2017 09:58

DH recently hurt his back carrying injured DDog into the vet's. The lovely vet saw to DDog, then insisted DH hopped onto the table for some acupuncture. Lovely vet didn't charge for the acupuncture (probably coz he shouldn't have been doing it!) and DH says his back hasn't felt so good in years. Smile

Tell him that will only accept treatment from Julian off the Yorkshire Vet Wink

CremeFresh · 14/08/2017 11:01

Omg no! Did you never watch all creatures great and small??? Did you not see which orifice the vet's arm disappeared into???? 😂

Gunpowder · 14/08/2017 13:36

Have never heard of the Supervet but I will look out for him now. Love this thread. OP your dad sounds like a hoot. And also, YANBU.

Jeezypeepers · 14/08/2017 16:33

@Missmoneyplant; yes if I operated on your cat you could totally sue me (although I'm not really that kind of surgeon/doctor so if I operated on you you could probably sue me too Grin)

I think the reason that vets generally don't like him is because people bring their pets to them asking them to perform 'miracles' like they've seen on supervet; which is pretty cagey about the fact that these procedures plus imaging cost tens of thousands of pounds which is not covered by your pet insurance; and also that they are often experimental which raises its own ethical issues. Obviously they don't show the pets with poor outcomes or that die on the telly.

BeakersofNaiceHam · 14/08/2017 16:44

I have to defend SV a bit they do mention these issues on the show and he does always tell the owners if it's an experimental procedure and the other options available. Maybe they are a bit hazy on the cost but I think most pet owners realise it is not going to be cheap. Also it has shown a few cases where the animals died, very sad. Or one in particular I remember where the owner decided to have his cat pts as he felt the treatment would be too painful and SV supported his decision. But I can understand that the show tends to be biased towards the successes and that might not be totally realistic.

Jeezypeepers · 14/08/2017 17:26

He may well be lovely, he does seem to genuinely like the animals he treats; I just think he always comes across awfully arrogant (although to be fair I know plenty of human surgeons like that as well Confused). I watched him on Crufts and he was busy telling Clare Balding how he would be happy to advise human orthopaedic surgeons on his newest and extremely successful procedures. I was a bit mortified for him really, every medic and vet I know who saw it thought he sounded like a right fanny.

BeakersofNaiceHam · 14/08/2017 20:40

I guess you need a very high level of confidence to be a good surgeon! I certainly think he loves animals and cares about his patients but he may not be that good with people. I watched him on that animal rescue live and he seemed a bit awkward.
