To sleep in the garden tonight?

Was just stroking my cats yesterday and saw a few fleas. Obviously panicked, and ordered a shit load of flea stuff from amazon, comes tomorrow. They're kittens, and haven't been out yet, but one escaped when I opened the door for literally five seconds - I guess she caught them then Sad

Woke up this morning and they're fucking everywhere. Spent all day trying to keep the cats off the sofa etc and DDs been really full on and was so looking forward to going to bed away from all the little critters.

Just walked into my room (doors been closed, cats are never allowed in there) and my room is bloody infested. There was FIVE on my foot in 30 seconds. They're on my bed. It's fucking rank. I literally don't know how I'm going to sleep in there.

Obvs worried about DD but not seen any bites on her or her itching, so that's good but she's only 2 so doesn't have the psychological ick like I do.

Also feel bad for the little kittens, they must be really uncomfortable. Looking forward to getting their medicine tomorrow for them. Tried to bathe them with baby shampoo as I read that that can help - that was traumatic for all involved.

Googled and some people say it takes weeks to get rid of them! Weeks!! Wtf!! I feel sick. I'm just in the bath with DD (the only place we're safe) and I never want to get out Sad

AIBU to sleep in the garden tonight? Seriously tempted to.

What flea treatment are people using? Is Advantage any good?

carnationlilyrose · 13/08/2017 19:49

Advocate is good - it's a combined flea and worm treatment you can get from the vets. You squeeze it on the back of their necks & repeat every month.

NancyJoan · 13/08/2017 19:49

HipsterHunter Advantage is okay, but the fleas do build up a tolerance. When our cats came home from the cattery, they were infested, and Advantage wouldn't shift them. The tablets you can get on prescription from the vet are the strongest treatment you can get, the dosage is based on your animal's weight, so have to be from vet, not online.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/08/2017 19:50

Advocate is brilliant.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 13/08/2017 19:50

Also please be very careful with flea collars. Some burn the cats skin. Heartz or sonething im sure the brand was.

Libitina · 13/08/2017 19:53

Does anyone else feel itchy after reading this thread? scratches arm

Katinkka · 13/08/2017 19:55

You need the stuff you can only get at the vets. Advocate I think. Definitely not frontline. Or cheap bob martins etc.

With that amount of fleas the cats came with fleas.

notangelinajolie · 13/08/2017 19:56

No, don't sleep in the garden the slugs with get you.

Go to the vet and get an injection. It makes the fleas infertile and the buggers soon become extinct.

While I'm at the vet's I go for the double whammy and buy some room flea spray as well. He says it's not necessary but I think it is Smile

Tried to get in DDs (absolutely flea free) bed but she told me to get out. Downstairs I haven't noticed that many at all, but they come out at night right? Plus then the cats will come and snuggle me Envy definitely not envy

Really shocked that they've been here a while, like people are saying. My cats are ginger, and I'm always stroking them, and I've never spotted one. To be fair, I thought it'd be a while till I had to worry about fleas (how thick am I!)

So my bedroom with the hungry fleas, or the sofa with presumably less fleas, and satiated ones at that, but also creepy Crawley covered cats (who don't seem too fussed btw, they're both cuddled up next to DDs 6 foot monkey, which I presume will need to get thrown away 😩)?

Currently smoking in the garden remembering when my biggest Sunday worry used to be which takeaway would cure my hangover the best 😑

At least I smell like a wonderful orange tree I guess

Wash, spray, hoover, repeat. Over and over for 2 weeks. Then again when you first turn the radiators on as the heat can make flea eggs hatch!

JennyBlueWren · 13/08/2017 20:20

I thought from the title you were planning to sleep out to see the meteor shower!

No advice on fleas but if the weather forecast is dry then sleep out! Just make sure you have a good layer between you and the ground as the cold comes up.

I used to sleep out at my parents (still do when visiting) but my garden's a bit exposed.

delilabell · 13/08/2017 20:20

We've got a very similar problem but have narrowed it down to just our bedroom now. Stayed it shut the door and went in holiday. Came back and my dh walked in and had twenty in his leg within seconds Shock
We have used stay kill (from pets at home) and it's worked well. Delilacat has only had three fleas I'm her in a fortnight. Apparently we've got a fleas nest in our bedroom (prob under the bed)it's vile isn't it?

JustMeeAgain · 13/08/2017 20:24

I have rtft but apparently placing bowls of boiling water on the floor kills them. They are attracted to the heat, jump in and die.

WhoreOfBabyliss · 13/08/2017 20:29

If you are using a spot on, wait for a good few days as you have bathed them as it needs the oil in the fur and the fat in the skin to work and bathing strips it out so it doesn't work. Instead of bathing use a flea comb to get the adults off the host. An infestation takes three months to clear properly. Vacuum, Indorex. Don't vac then for days, it works better. Repeat Indorex after a month until it's gone.
