To not believe the lifespan of lightbulbs

topcat2014 · 13/08/2017 11:45

So, we have had new wall lights fitted where none were before.

They take small 'golf ball' sized screw in bulbs.

According to the pack, they will last for fifteen years!

That's longer than I have been married, and will take me to 60 years old

(which is scary in itself).

Not convinced, to be honest.

Report back in 15 years and let us know how it goes!

reallybadidea · 13/08/2017 11:48

They never do last anywhere near as long. I keep the receipts and take them back regularly when they go, usually after 18 months Angry

Trills · 13/08/2017 11:48

Are they LED bulbs?

nomorechocolate1 · 13/08/2017 11:49

I believe it, we have been in our house 8 years and the only bulbs I change regularly are halogen ones (like the cooker hood, bathroom and kitchen bulbs). The rest are energy saving and I haven't changed any yet

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 11:49

I hope it's true.

We are in the process of replacing all our halogen downlighters with LED ones.

All 92 of them.

Oliversmumsarmy · 13/08/2017 11:52

Mine go on a regular basis. I also keep the receipts they are not cheap. I have some only last 6weeks. I am always changing them

Trills · 13/08/2017 11:54

nomore I think you'd better tell us which brand you use so that reallybadidea and Oliversmummy can go buy some of those.

orlantina · 13/08/2017 11:54

All 92 of them

Are you the Queen?

orlantina · 13/08/2017 11:55

Mine go on a regular basis

They really shouldn't. New LED lights and energy saving lights are supposed to last for ages.

I hope your electrics are ok.

Manupprincess · 13/08/2017 11:59

We have solar panels (nightmare issues, on before we bought) and they are incompatible with LED so blow the bulbs within days. Bought loads before we found out that. Halogen work and last a lot longer but still only 1 year-ish.

itsbetterthanabox · 13/08/2017 11:59

Look up planned obsolescence.
Light bulbs should last a century!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 13/08/2017 12:00

Our LED spots are supposed to last five years. Do they heck. Keep the receipts.

Cailleach666 · 13/08/2017 12:21

*All 92 of them

Are you the Queen?*

Unfortunately not.

Downlighters everywhere- 15 in the sitting room alone, 8 in the hall, even in the shower, all bedrooms, porch, dining room.

Bloody previous owner put them in. Too expensive to remove. They do look nice though and cast a lovely light.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/08/2017 06:28

The house has just been rewired. Hence why we have spots in every room.

They cost a bloody fortune and I only went with them because they said they were guaranteed to not go.

Oliversmumsarmy · 14/08/2017 06:29

92 isn't a lot, I have 12 in my bedroom alone

IHateYourCarpet · 14/08/2017 07:02

The life of the bulb is actually based on a pretty short amount of use per day, I think it's actually less than 2.5 hours per day. So that tends to be why they don't last as long as expected.

I was told this about five years ago though!

Ijustwantaquietlife · 14/08/2017 07:07

I've had one led bulb go completely and another start flickering. 5 years old. No they won't last that long.

I also think they have got dimmer with time and will look at replacing soon.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 14/08/2017 07:17

We had an extension built on our house in 2007. The bulbs in our bedside lamps in our bedroom had a guarantee of 10 years; they are still going strong.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/08/2017 08:03

We have 16 spots in our lounge and I hate them! They're on a dimmer but they flicker unless they are on full blast. Cailleach do you use a particular type to cast a lovely light? Ours are awful! They thankfully haven't needed replaced yet as we inherited them. We have halogen in our kitchen, new light fittings bought a few months ago and they blow all the time. It seems once one goes they all start to, and the shadows are horrible unless all are working.
Our bathroom ones are nice, they actually do dim correctly.
They do seem expensive but I suppose if they last 15 years that's not too bad!

ShatnersWig · 14/08/2017 08:08

Moved into my flat 7 years ago next month. Put new light fittings in and new bulbs everywhere, although LED spots in kitchen. One of the LED spots went after 5 years. Every other bulb or LED still going.

nomorechocolate1 · 18/08/2017 18:29

I just buy energy saving bulbs, usually the cheapest ones and from home bargains or similar x
