To wonder why you'd read or watch anything more than once?

I only ever watch films or read books once. When you know how the story will end I can't see the point in reading or watching again. If a tv programme comes on that I've seen before then I'd rather turn the TV off than watch it again. What is the point in watching twice? I feel like I'd be wasting time because I could be watching something new. I won't even have time in my life to read all the books I'd like to so why would I spend time rereading something that I would know how it ends. I use the library a lot so at least it doesn't cost anything for me to read new books!

It's not only about the plotline though is it?

You read or watch again to get another layer of meaning out of it, or because it had a profound impact the first time.

RiverTam · 12/08/2017 20:12

Agreed. Easy not to see the whole picture first time around. Yes, there's lots to see but I think you are equally missing out by not revisiting.

And sometimes for comfort. Rereading or rewatch img old favourites is such a joy.

Ameliablue · 12/08/2017 20:12

Because I enjoyed it, so why not, I'll still enjoy it on subsequent occasions. Sometimes I've forgotten details or notice things I didn't before.

Purpledahlia88 · 12/08/2017 20:13

Why listen to any song more than once? Because you enjoy the emotions the song/film/book evokes.

GirlOnATrainToShite · 12/08/2017 20:14

I have seen Dirty Dancing 10,000 times.

YABU.

SirVixofVixHall · 12/08/2017 20:14

I love a re-read or a re-watch. I have read some of my favourite books several times over and watch much loved films fairly often too. I think of it like a lovely wallow in something familiar, but as Yika says, something different each time. I even sometimes re-read childhood favourite books.

wotabastard · 12/08/2017 20:14

Because I enjoyed the story so much it's worth reading or watching again.

How do you think songs, fairytales and folklore got passed down through generations? People wanted to hear them again and again?

Do you like listening to music you've heard before? Or is that a waste because you already know the tune? Confused

DeathByMascara · 12/08/2017 20:14

I find great comfort in re-reading or re-watching things that I love. And as mentioned above, you do find new meanings on second/third repetition.

I've listened to the Harry Potter audiobooks on a near continuous loop since first downloading them 10 years ago. I know them so well I can dip in and out of listening to them. They're the best thing for me to listen to when I need to concentrate, at work, for instance.

thenightsky · 12/08/2017 20:14

I re-read my Jilly Cooper books on holiday approx every 10 years I reckon. I still love them.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 12/08/2017 20:15

I find this a really odd question! If I enjoy a book I want to experience it again. It would be really sad to think I wouldn't read a fab book again.

PurpleDaisies · 12/08/2017 20:15

Because you enjoy it? Why would you eat the same meal more than once when you know what it tastes like?

PollyFlint · 12/08/2017 20:16

You only like to read/see things once. Some people like to read/see things more than once. I'm not really sure what point you're making. It's no skin off your nose if someone reads their favourite book more than once, is it?

I would point out that there is more to a book, a film or a TV programme than just 'knowing how it ends', however. There's also the beauty of the writing, the performances and the cinematography. It's perfectly possible to read or watch something many times and take something new away from it each time. If you don't like to do that, that's absolutely fine; nobody else is going to be remotely bothered by your reading habits.

SabineUndine · 12/08/2017 20:18

I like good meaty novels and the thing about something written well is you get more out of it each time you read it. E.g. you pick up imagery or metaphors where the first time you were following the plot. To me that's actually the difference between a good book and a bad one.

TheLuminaries · 12/08/2017 20:19

The first time you read a book, you want to know what happens so it can feel rushed so you want to go back and enjoy it without having to concentrate on remember the character or following the plot. Not all books merit a re-read, but some most definitely do. And re watching a loved and familiar film is like slipping into a warm bath to relax.

Pizzaexpressreview · 12/08/2017 20:20

I don't like reading a book more than once or watching a film again. people who watch and research series completely baffle me! if rather watch something new.

But can co.pletely accept my thirst for new knowledge and experiences isn't usual!

Loyly · 12/08/2017 20:22

I don't only read/watch for plot or anticipation. If I love the atmosphere, the way it resonates with me, the imagery or the feelings it stirs up, then I'll repeat read/watch.

annandale · 12/08/2017 20:23

Why would you want to see a friend more than once? Because their perspective on the world, the way they see things, brings you something. A character in a novel or a film can be like a friend. I saw Amadeus five times in the cinema because I wanted to be with those characters for longer, I wasn't ready to leave them.

A novel creates a world of its own, something it can be a pleasure to revisit. Also there are the memories of the previous times in your own life when you read them. I have many novels that I have read every few years for three decades. I remember some of the novel but also the person I was at different times in my life, and the different perspectives I've had on the book each time.

JustHappy3 · 12/08/2017 20:24

Because i change as a person as the years pass. And i find different nuances or react differently to plot and characters or just reminisce about things that spoke to me then that no longer do.
All art has an impact because each person brings their own perceptions to it.
I love to discover new authors, directors but there's never anything lost by a rereading or rewatching.

MudGolum · 12/08/2017 20:24

Depends if you're reading Katie Price's autobiography or Catch 22.

userofthiswebsite · 12/08/2017 20:26

Er, in the same way that if I like a particular food, I'd eat it again.

You know you'll enjoy it,

Brittbugs80 · 12/08/2017 20:29

I re read, re watch, re listen re eat things I have enjoyed.

Why wouldn't anyone?!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 12/08/2017 20:29

I don't think reading a book again or watching a movie more than once means you have no thirst for new knowledge or experiences Hmm that makes it sound like you feel your more superior to those of us who do reread and rewatch.
I have many reasons for reading a book again. I enjoyed it, I also read and write some heavy going things in daytime life and sometimes I want to read something in my own time that I don't have to think about. I also see new things when I read a book I haven't read for a while. Some because I missed them the first time and some because I am older and my experience and perspective has changed since I last read/saw it. Sometimes it's just because I really enjoyed it and want to experience it again. I also read and watch lots of new stuff. I love learning and am having new learning experiences all the time. Some things I've learnt are purely because I have reread a book, noticed something new and spent some time researching that.

Pizzaexpressreview · 12/08/2017 20:32

Not at all superior. I often wonder if I have adhd traits as I crave new "input" and have a very low boredom threshold. I'm rubbish at routine tasks.

But if I'm going to sit and read/watch tv I need new information/experiences I can't sit still through something repeated.

CashelGirl · 12/08/2017 20:35

I love to reread and rewatch. As others have said, there are different perspectives and layers that I don't take in the first time, there is a comfort in the familiarity of the story and characters and my own evolving history casts them in a different light. I have read Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood at least 10 times and am planning on reading it again soon. I have watched the film Tootsie loads and my view on it changes as I get older. My husband is a very prolific reader but he rarely re-reads.

BillBrysonsBeard · 12/08/2017 20:38

Just because I loved it so much, and yes I notice different things each time. I would feel sad not to revisit shows and films!
