If someone works in a role that necessitates a police check and they are in trouble with the police while in that role what happens?

(Not me BTW)

I would assume the police would tell the employer, though I'm not sure.

Any police officers or HR around?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/08/2017 20:17

In most cases they'd be contractually obliged to report the police interaction to work, and it'd be investigated. It's hard to give more detail that that without knowing roles etc.

Some contracts will specify they only need to be told if charges are pressed; some will need to know from the beginning... etc.

There are what's called Notifiable Occupations. If the job falls into this category, an automatic notification flag is raised to inform the employer

TmiTuesdays · 10/08/2017 20:20

If its something that would be relevant to a police check (violent crime, sexual crime, crime against kids/vulnerable adults) then they'd have to declare it.

MrsHathaway · 10/08/2017 20:21

When I've worked in schools I've had to have my CRB/DBS renewed occasionally. If anything new cropped up you'd be out on your ear.

OlennasWimple · 10/08/2017 20:22

Usually the employee would have to declare it to their employer, but as pp said different places have different thresholds (questioning / charge / prosecution / conviction)

Piratesandpants · 10/08/2017 20:28

DBS is renewed in schools and colleges. You would probably face a disciplinary if you hadn't declared it. Don't know about other settings.

summerlavender · 10/08/2017 20:29

Thanks for that. So would the onus be on the person convicted to report it?

Not always. Police do report for certain offences. If someone who works with children is arrested for any offence against a child then a LADO referral would be made. Likewise, there are other occupations (I'm not sure of them) that if you were arrested for certain offences a referral would be made to the governing body or equivalent.
