To ask for interview advice?

For my DH, not me!

He is applying for jobs that he fits the criteria for, although I am encouraging him to apply for some ones that may be out of his reach (mildly! Meaning he fits most but may not have one particular experience/qualification asked for).

He has been in a stable but low paid job for a few years and has decided he'd like to try something else. He's had several interviews but all have been unsuccessful. One even cited him as being 'too nice' (I saw the rejection email!) as a reason for him not getting the job, but admitted he presented very well at interview. He's not been too bothered as none of the jobs were ones he really wanted, but he has one coming up that he would love. He's worrying now as he wants to come across well and isn't really sure what he's missing!

Does anyone have any advice or experience of interviewing that can shed some light on things people particularly like, or dislike, at interviews?

I've had a fair few interviews recently, again with a change in career direction. I was successful. My number one tip is for him to research both the company and the job VERY thoroughly. Understand them, their culture, values and priorities and to sell himself based on this. He needs pertinent examples of achievements where his skills match those required. Finally, they're looking for someone who CAN do the job (skills), WILL do the job (motivated) and they can put up with (personality is a good fit for the team). Good luck to him!

The thing is he just has to keep applying. Most employers have internal or known candidates in mind already and so often even if he's at his best he won't get the job - harsh but true. I apply for 200 job postings typically every time I get a promotion.

I looked at it this way.

If I was vaguely interested in a job, I applied for it.

Updated, tweaked my CV, accompanying letter to suit.

I used it as to hone my CV and if I got an interview, considered it time well spent in learning from any mistakes I made during the interview and implemented them into the next interview.

After 5 years and lots of interviews, got the job I wanted.

Good luck to your OH, it's a marathon not a sprint 😀👍
