To be pissed off that my £65 a month gym has turned into a kids leisure centre for the holidays?

I pay £65 a month for David Lloyd membership. It's always been a child friendly place but they normally have specific times when kids can use the pool and gym etc. Since the start of the summer holidays however the pools have turned into "family fun zones" all day every day. I can't be doing with going in when it's like that as it's just too busy and noisy. On top of this the gym is running numerous "kid fit" classes meaning a lot of the gym equipment and tennis courts are taken up by kids.

AIBU to think they don't need to turn the whole place into a children's centre just because it's the summer holidays?? And if they really must do this, perhaps the rest of us should get a monthly discount until September?

I suspect your opinion is shared with other DL members. I took dd, ds and nephew swimming at our DL on Tuesday. It was the family friendly session but my shrieking ds (suspected autism) caused a woman to tell me he needed a good hiding!! At our gym there are adult only swim times and all the classes are adult only so it's not really a problem. There is a kids club but they seem to keep them contained in the crèche room and tennis courts.

And I'm envious of the poster who pays £35 a month. Ours is £171 but that includes 2 toddlers and swimming lessons and free tennis for dd.

YANBU and it's the reason I left DL - as a teacher in the hols I wanted to go and relax and the place was full of kids.

Slimthistime · 10/08/2017 17:30

latebreakfast - it sounds like they are selling packages completely wrongly then. Trading Standards? I don't see why gyms should get away with selling stuff on the basis of hours for children and adults and then change them around willy nilly.

Notreallyhappy · 10/08/2017 17:33

Our leisure pool & spa pools turn into this on Friday at half 3... you've had a titfull all week want half hour peace and a little f*er thinks he can snorkel in the jacuzzi. Don't start me on the swimming lessons😠

Jaxhog · 10/08/2017 17:34

YANBU.

I left DL last year due to a badly handled theft while I was swimming. I too got fed up with sharing the gym with unsupervised kids over the summer (and every other school holiday). I now have a personal trainer who comes to me once a week. Best decision I ever made.

DopeyDazy · 10/08/2017 17:59

We go to a hotel / gym and theyve started a single use payment so when the weather's crap its full of kids. One baby did a poo in the water and it was closed for 48 hours while it was backflushed with no recompense for members.

JustHappy3 · 10/08/2017 18:31

Hmm actually - having moaned about the cost the point about just going to the park for free has made me value my DL memb.
The staff are superbly welcoming, the cafe is lovely and the softplay is not crowded and clean. There's a creche. The childrenin the gym/classes is unheard of. The pool always has adult swim lanes and the children's pool is toasty warm. There's a little library of books. Not forgetting the powerful showers, sauna, steam jacuzzi etc. I really do feel like it's a second home.

flumpybear · 10/08/2017 19:48

Don't blame The kids and families blame the gym ffs - we pay for our kids too - but thankfully our gym offers free child club with play and crafts, play areas with soft play frame, two hour sessions all free so my husband goes to the gym for his own session whilst kids play and have fun for two hours, he then takes them swimming in the kids pool - ther are kids fun fun sessions too - it's one reason we go there ... virgin

LalaLeona · 11/08/2017 02:47

Bloody hell DL is £130 a month here such a price difference!

lljkk · 11/08/2017 05:57

The pools have turned into "family fun zones" all day every day.

Please Post a link to the summer timetable or "always" never happened.

aquashiv · 11/08/2017 07:04

We as a family stayed at a hotel with DL attached and used the facilities. The hotel wasn't cheap. It had a few families but all the kids behaved. Ours are young but they know that a spa is a place where adults go to relax. I can see if you having to deal with noise and the like it could be highly irritating.

powernapsrule · 11/08/2017 07:16

Can't believe DL is so expensive. I go to a Bannatynes and that should be £29 but is subsidised by works so I only pay £23. They only allow kids at certain times and only in the pool. No kids at all in the gym and they run a couple of kids classes at the weekend. I can't remember the last time I was in the pool with kids as mostly they are in there during the day and I work.

I'd definitely be complaining if kids were in the pool all day at the weekends.

TheNaze73 · 11/08/2017 07:42

YANBU. That sounds like hell, that you're paying the privilege for

Walnutwhiplash · 11/08/2017 08:12

I quit my £91 a month DL membership for the same reason. It's just a very expensive leisure centre.

LadyWithLapdog · 11/08/2017 08:45

Our local DL is lovely but hideously expensive. There's not quite enough stuff/times for the kids so we're not members. I remember when DL were still relatively cheap and cheerful compared to others, e.g. Esporta, remember those?

Jaxhog · 11/08/2017 12:36

I had no idea the cost of DL varied so much! I was paying £85 a month. That explains why they don't post the prices on their website. My PT cost me £120 a month, and worth every penny.

Loopytiles · 11/08/2017 19:23

I've posted on their FB site and twitter before that I would never join partly because there is no transparency on price.

Many vendors/service providers wish to charge different prices to different customers, but this isn't OK IMO.

SoPassRemarkable · 11/08/2017 19:28

T costs different prices at the same gym. My friend pays less than me, we both have the same company corporate discount but I pay £10 a month more for some reason.

Louiselouie0890 · 11/08/2017 19:55

If the children are paying to then yabu, there customers too.
