I'm curled up in agony. Need to leave the house soon. Have tried ibuprofen and a hot bath, which eased it a little but it's creeping back up! Wondering if there are any magic cures that I am not yet aware of!

You can alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen - taking the max. daily doses of each safely. I do this, and it's the only way for me when my period pain is bad.

Also, hot water bottle, or those things that heat up and stick on your knickers if you have to be out and about.

AuntieStella · 10/08/2017 09:45

I found the best painkiller was aspirin/codeine (I've always got in well with aspirin, but if you don't then I expect paracetamol/codeine wouid do much the same).

I would take the max dose in the minimum permitted time just for a couple of days, because I found that once it started working, everything seemed to unknot and I'd be OK.

The prescription strength NSAIDS are also good - ask you GP

I've found coriander seed steeped as a tea helps. Tastes grim but helps, it sounds a bit woo but worth a try.

Bananalanacake · 10/08/2017 09:46

Having an orgasm releases the brain's natural painkiller, forget its name, sorry.

DeadDoorpost · 10/08/2017 09:47

My sister uses frozen bags of peas or whatever she can get out the freezer to help her pains as got water bottles don't help her at all (she passes out from the pain nearly every month and yes I've told her to get it checked out but she's stubborn). I also just curl up and sleep, dose myself up on tablets to an allowable limit and then cross my fingers. I've known someone to get heatpacks that can be attached to your back to relieve it before though so that could be something to look into. And someone once said about using the tape that sportspeople use? Don't know how that helps but apparently it's supposed to so who knows.

WritingHome · 10/08/2017 09:48

Having an orgasm really does work!

SmileEachDay · 10/08/2017 09:50

Endorphins Banana

A Mooncup sorted out my period pain. No idea why.

soapboxqueen · 10/08/2017 09:50

Painkillers and sex

soapboxqueen · 10/08/2017 09:50

Also not using tampons. Makes it massively worse.

itsbetterthanabox · 10/08/2017 09:51

Naproxen.
You can buy it as feminax ultra or just plain naproxen if they do it. It's behind the counter at the pharmacy.
Wait 4 hours after taking the ibuprofen before taking it though.
It's Magic honestly!

itsbetterthanabox · 10/08/2017 09:52

I find ibuprofen and paracetamol and codeine do nothing for my bad period pain. Naproxen fixes it!

MaidOfStars · 10/08/2017 09:54

Another vote for sex/masturbation to orgasm.

Straycatblue · 10/08/2017 09:54

Being in that much pain is not normal.

When you are able, you should discuss with pharmacist what options you have with over the counter painkillers as you can have much stronger than you are taking and also have a mix of different kinds before you even get to the prescribed painkillers.

You can also get "wearable" heat packs to stick onto your abdomen and tiny tens machines for period pain that also stick on abdomen.

Not sure if this is just a once off or something you are suffering with every month but please just dont accept it, see gp and push for diagnosis/gynae referral, there could be several things that are causing your severe pain .

At the very least, your gp can prescribe stronger painkillers.

SarahBeeney · 10/08/2017 09:55

Starflower oil (borage oil) taken every day of the month. Literally changed my life and made such a difference to the pain, not the flow though.
It reduced the pain so much for me that I only needed paracetamol occasionally.
It won't help you today of course but do try it for next month.
I now have a Mirena so no periods at all thank goodness.

paap1975 · 10/08/2017 09:56

Exercise - I realise you don't feel like it, but it does help. Either walking or cycling.

napmeistergeneral · 10/08/2017 09:57

Buscopan. A revelation. Treats cramps incredibly well.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 10/08/2017 10:00

Definitely try alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen, just be careful not to overdose on either. For the future I swear by taking ibuprofen before the pain hits. At the first twinge I start taking it and it stops the pain ever reaching a peak. Though if this is a regular occurance for you I would go to your GP, you don't have to put up with it when there are things that can be done.

ElfrideSwancourt · 10/08/2017 10:00

@itsbetterthanabox don't take naproxen and ibuprofen on the same day- they are the same type of drug but naproxen is much stronger.

JamAndBread · 10/08/2017 10:01

I second straycat's suggestion that too much pain isn't normal and could hint to something like endometriosis etc.

But aside from that: cold pack, many painkillers, floating in water, getting up and walking around a bit. And if it's specifically cramping that's hurting, as napmeistergeneral said - buscopan.

Roomba · 10/08/2017 10:07

I cannot imagine being able to masturbate or orgasm when in the throes of period pain, however effective it is supposed to be. No thanks.

The only thing that works for me is codeine, or even better Ibuprofen and Codeine combined. Nurofen Plus or Boots Ibuprofen and Codeine tablets work very well (think you can buy generic versions in some chemists too). Not cheap though.

WhooooAmI24601 · 10/08/2017 10:50

I have ridiculously heavy periods which can vary from can't-feel-a-thing to can't-move-about on the pain scale. Not using tampons helps. I have a moon cup and though at first I found it a bit 'ick' it really does help. Lavender oil on my pillow and sleeping with the windows open helps me not get too hot and flustered through the night. If you're feeling bloated a few drops of peppermint oil in boiled water is lovely and soothing for your stomach (I had an op a while back and discovered it after my abdomen had been pumped full of gas to inflate it for the op, it's amazing stuff and really helps reduce the water retention which makes everything uncomfortable)

Yoga and pilates (super gentle and slow) help, as does swimming.

A hot water bottle on my back also helps, plus lots of rest wherever possible.

ktjb39 · 10/08/2017 10:53

Feminax express is brilliant - first bought it about a year ago and I can't believe I hadn't tried it before! I find just the initial dose of two tablets works wonders. Also a good cry and rant at someone often takes the edge off too Wink

Waddlelikeapenguin · 10/08/2017 10:55

Yoga in the moment (gentle cat cow is a good place to start)

Squatting properly regularly changed me from taken constant painkillers for 5 days every month to taking nothing.

caffeinestream · 10/08/2017 10:57

Traxenamic acid for heavy flow, then alternate ibuprofen and co-codamol for the pain.

GoldenBlue · 10/08/2017 11:06

The pill is life changing for me. The one I'm on reduces the cycle and most months I don't get a period at all.
In the meantime keep the midriff warm, I found any cold in that area significantly increased the cramps.
Paracetamol and ibuprofen at max dose, overlapping so that you take each 2 hrs apart to provide the best coverage.
Evening primrose oil
Exercise
Orgasm is a big help if you can manage it
