To beg for a solution to this pain

I have an abcess in my mouth. I was in agony with it last week, visited dentist and was given antibiotics. They took about three days to kick in but went on holiday, big improvement over the weekend.

It started to get worse again yesterday but not painful and I have an appointment on Friday so just tried to get on with bog standard painkillers and the usual home remedies.

Tonight I am in agony. My face has swollen up again and I have been literally crying and screaming in pain. I have tried everything I can think of- ice pack, whisky, salt water, garlic, gently massaged my gum to see if it would ease any of the infection out. The whisky numbs it enough to take the edge off for ten minutes or so but nothing else touches the sides.

There are no pharmacies open and I cant get to A&E as I dont have a car and taxi companies arent open this late through the week.

Can anyone recommend anything that might help?

No recommendations - sorry, just offering sympathy.
Is there anyway you could knock yourself out and sleep through it. Drink the whiskey, perhaps?

notevernotnevernotnohow · 10/08/2017 02:54

Weed? Sleeping pills? You poor thing.

abbey44 · 10/08/2017 02:54

When I had an abscess in my mouth, the only way of relieving the pain was to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen every two hours - ie each one four-hourly, but staggered by two hours, IYSWIM. Maybe try that and rub cloves on your gum as well, which might help.

Hope something works for you - it's horrible, I know.

It can be a very effective pain reliever.

Partypolitics99 · 10/08/2017 03:09

There is a mouthwash called Colgate peroxil that I used last time and it helped make the pain bareable along with paracetamol and Ibuprofen also try dabbing on a bit of clove oil

Partypolitics99 · 10/08/2017 03:10

Well weed is used as a painkiller. To tell you the truth I would have given anything a try last time I had an absess

waitingforthewaterwars2 · 10/08/2017 03:29

Smoke the weed.
Definitely smoke the weed. You don't have the time to make it into an edible with that level of pain. Roll up several spliffs and smoke till you can't see straight.
Don't drink anymore alcohol , drink water - you don't want a thumping hangover at the same time.
Go to A & E as soon as you can in the morning.

whattodowiththepoo · 10/08/2017 03:30

Clove oil, dab a little on to a cotton bud and rub it on the area inside your mouth.
Should go numb very quickly.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/08/2017 03:32

I went throught a similar thing and did take double doses of Iburofen and paracetamol. It didnt touch it, but suddenly after about 24 hours it stopped. I was then told by my dentist that it was my tooth nerves were dead, so I can only assume it was the death throes of that tooth.

I was rolling around in the worst pain ever, nothing relieved it. All I can say is to do whatever you can to get through it until you can see a dentist.

There are jokes about childbirth v manflu, but I would have my 14 hour home birth with no pain relief again over the toothache :(

safariboot · 10/08/2017 03:42

Dental pain is horrible. I've had it before so bad that I just collapsed on the floor unable to do anything. And it's not taken seriously enough by medical professionals - the dentist can't prescribe adequate painkillers and the doctor won't have anything to do with it. It's no wonder one of the most common situations for paracetamol overdose is dental pain.

And when it happens in the middle of the night, I'm not sure there's anything you can do Sad. You could try 111 and see if you can get an ambulance sent but my guess is they won't.

fedupski · 10/08/2017 03:52

I had this a few months ago. 111 were useless, unless you're bleeding from the month, they didn't want to know. What eventually worked for me was 6 tablespoons of salt in half a glass of water, gargling every 30 minutes until it popped the absess. The relief was immediate. As this happened on a Saturday, I kept gargling with salt and corsodyl every couple of hours to keep my mouth clean and stayed away from food for the weekend.

The dentist then cleaned it all out and gave me the strongest doses of two types of antibiotics which cleared it.

Good Luck.

Please don't get plastered, OP. In my experience it doesn't help much with severe pain & even if it did, you need to be alcohol-free prior to surgery. Get thyself to a&e by means fair or foul! Meanwhile, PP's advice of alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen is the best treatment barring opioids. Flowers

CannucktheCrow · 10/08/2017 04:01

I knew this would be a mouth abscess!

You can buy mouthwash with anaesthetic in it, over the counter, at most pharmacists. The brand I've tried was Difflam. Heartily recommend. It doesn't completely relieve the pain but it does help.

Take maximum amounts of cocodamol and ibuprofen evenly spaced. It takes a couple of days to get the full effects of these pain killers as if builds up. Not for long term use though. I know pharmacies aren't open ATM.

MarilynWhirlwindRocks · 10/08/2017 04:49

So sorry you're in such agony. OP.

Hope relief found asap, by whatever means most effective. Flowers

Ledkr · 10/08/2017 05:19

Have you got any Codiene?

Pandamanda3 · 10/08/2017 05:44

Try crushing the painkiller into a fine powder and packing it all around the abscess my mum swore this helped her although tastes absolutly dreadful

ElfrideSwancourt · 10/08/2017 06:00

Don't go to A&E or phone an ambulance! They will not be able to do anything. Get in touch with your dentist as soon as they open and get seen today.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 10/08/2017 06:08

Clove oil rubbed on the area, I'd you don't have any you can chew cloves until you get some (chew as close to the abscess a possible)
