To expect the Valspar paint we used not to make me ill and homeless at 34 weeks pregnant?

I'm at my wits end.

We are getting ready for the baby, so whilst ex has the kid on holiday we decided to get the house redecorated in a oner. Stressful, but a short push and we'll be all settled for the baby.

One room from being finished we noticed a smell like cats pee coming from the newly painted bedroom. We checked with the upstairs neighbour who had cats, but her house was completely fine.

The next day the smell intensifies, now it smells like gas, so we get the gas board out to check us and next door. Everything's fine, it's probably the paint he says.

My partner Googles this and finds hundreds of people who have had this problem. People have been rehousing cats, ripping up carpets, getting rid of couches, all because they didn't know where this smell came from. Valspar removed an additive that prevents bacteria from growing, so now when this paint is exposed to light and/or damp the bacteria are activated and start giving off ammonia and hydrogen sulphide.

That night, we go out to a film to try and take our minds off it. We feel so much better to be out of the flat, when we get home we try to just tough it out, sleep through it. But our eyes are burning, our throats hurt, my ears are blocked and my stomach acid is really really bad. Not just late pregnancy bad, but 250ml of Gaviscon in one night, swigging from the bottle bad.

We flee the house at 1am to stay at a friends house. We spent the next 2weeks

I don't want to put you off your legal action Virginia but you're looking at tens of thousands for this type of court action, in quantifying your losses, proving permanent health damage etc etc. Seriously. And a good couple of years of your life.

BrownJenkins · 09/08/2017 22:30

Crown also had this problem a few years ago.
Their advice was to cut several onions in half and place them around the room.
The onions are supposed to absorb the bad smells.
Worth a try, maybe.

PersianCatLady · 09/08/2017 22:32

We'll be taking this up with lawyers for damages
Don't bother.

Work out exactly what it will cost you to redecorate the rooms and if it falls short of the £370 per room, write to B & Q and show them the receipts and the like.

Don't expect them to pay for accommodation because that would be deemed as excessive.

PersianCatLady · 09/08/2017 22:33

Forgot to ask, when did you paint the rooms??

PersianCatLady · 09/08/2017 22:38

What they've taken from us is worth so much more than money and time, they've taken my health and peace of mind at a very delicate stage in my family's life. I will never forgive them for that, and I will take them for as much as I can so they learn never to do it again, and perhaps my family will get a nice holiday out of it in the end
Stop being dramatic.

I know it is awful and upsetting especially when you are pregnant but you are getting too worked up.

If you think it is affecting your health go to the GP and tell them about it and ask for a full report of any damage the paint fumes have done to you.

Either the GP will put your mind at rest (most likely) or you will have proof of your medical condition to add to the claim (very unlikely).

You won't take them for as much as you can, if you don't get adequate compensation from B & Q and you go to court, a judge will assess your losses and they don't look kindly upon all this "take them for all I can nonsense".

.

usernamenottaken · 09/08/2017 22:48

Right, firstly, try to relax. It will be fixed. I work in an independent local decorating shop and we've been helping people sort this for ages.

You need a sealer like this www.johnstonestrade.com/product/alkali-resisting-primer

And a good two coats of TRADE QUALITY paint, not cheap crap from b&q

You could also use a liquid paint stripper and sponge to get some of the paint off before the sealer goes on. Just make sure it's dry.

HelenaDove · 09/08/2017 22:54

Christ that sounds bad. My DH has emphysema. I cant even use nail polish at home because the fumes make him ill. This would put him in hospital.

Hadnt heard of Valspar paint until i saw a tv advert last weekend. No wonder they currently have an advertising drive.

Will stick with Dulux.

Dowser · 09/08/2017 22:59

Omg.... just horrendous. I really feel for you op.
Time to see a solicitor
Valspar are taking the piss

doubleshotespresso · 09/08/2017 23:09

Now this is a thread I really would like to see published in the DM!

OP I really feel for you, I was pregnant when we had decorating work done and I could barely hold down water for most of my pregnancy. Everything from a lit candle to a bacon sandwich made me throw up. We had less offensive paint than this, I hope you get this sorted soon.

FWIW I think the (very good) practical advice you have been given is the way to go. Stressing yourself out with costly and not guaranteed legal proceedings is not what you need to be doing now...

I really hope this gets sorted soon-congratulations, try and enjoy your pregnancy as much as you can.

There's heartburn and there's waking up every 20 minutes from heartburn. I've been pregnant before, I know the difference between normal pregnancy heartburn and this weird stuff. Again, other people, non pregnant people, have reported this side effect. It's not just me. I'm just especially sensitive because I'm pregnant.

I will never forgive them for that, and I will take them for as much as I can so they learn never to do it again, and perhaps my family will get a nice holiday out of it in the end. But no money, no holiday, could ever truly pay us back for what we've lost. It's beyond price

Dramatic, much?

Plus, you're not homeless, you've chosen to move out of your house due to an unpleasant smell.

Yeah that is a bit of a shitter, especially with you being pregnant, but you are massively, massively over-dramatising this.

Plus, I'd knock any ideas about oodles of compensation on the head, probably your best bet is a few quid is a sad face article in the Daily Mail with you looking glum and holding a pot of valspar paint, accusingly at the camera.

PersianCatLady · 10/08/2017 03:16

No-one has disagreed with you about how you feel but if you think that it will entitle you to thousands of pounds in compensation, then you are very wrong.

Why don't you go and see your GP tomorrow to check that everything is OK and that the fumes have not done you any harm??

You do know that if you go to court about this, your self reported heartburn will be irrelevant unless you have medical proof that it is worse than it should be because of the paint fumes.

Instead of keep talking about the heartburn why don't you take on board some of the constructive advice to get this situation rectified as soon as possible??

BusyBeez99 · 10/08/2017 06:20

Last time we used Valspar was about 4 years ago and I threw up and had awful stomach ache. Now I know why!

SnickersWasAHorse · 10/08/2017 09:05

Have you contacted You and Yours or Watchdog. They'd be able to chase it up for you.

In the future buy Dulux Trade. There will be a supplier near you and they can mix any colour. The one near me also supplied Farrow and Ball - they will also mix Dulux Trade to match any F&B colour.

24HourPartyPerson · 10/08/2017 09:08

Sorry to hear you are going through this OP but thanks for starting the thread - I had instructed a painter to go ahead and paint my lounge in a Valspar colour but will go and get some Dulux tester pots instead!
I hope it will be sorted out soon but it doesn't sound like there is an easy solution Sad

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 10/08/2017 09:15

No busy the paint is not the 'reason why'

4 years ago the paint wasn't affected!!! It's only one batch without the preservative.... such drama!!

MumIsRunningAMarathon · 10/08/2017 09:18

And as the EU regulations on what can be used in paint tighten, this kind of thing will continue to happen

Manufacturers are made to remove chemicals as the laws change around them. Oil based will be gone soon completely...

Witchend · 10/08/2017 09:31

Heartburn can easily be that bad in pregnancy. One of my friends had it so bad she took to carrying a bottle of gaviscon around, and would swig from it. She slept in an upright chair as otherwise it kept her awake.
Funny thing was that was her second pregnancy and she didn't have it at all in the first, and hardly in the third.

PersianCatLady · 10/08/2017 11:24

Have you contacted You and Yours or Watchdog. They'd be able to chase it up for you
The OP doesn't need to contact Watchdog as there is already a system in place to deal with the issue.

B&Q says anyone affected should ring their customer service helpline on 0333 014 3098.

The OP needs to phone this number and take it from there.

I would prepare a rough calculation of the costs involved in putting right the damage and see what B & Q say.

I would not include anything other such as "pain and suffering" of accommodation costs or anything.

OP - Have you contacted this B & Q helpline yet??

Iizzyb · 11/08/2017 18:54

Hi OP I hope things feel a little better than they did a couple of days ago & maybe you feel a little bit better now.

I just wanted to seriously thank you for flagging the issue up as I had been trying to find the source of the smell in ds' bedroom but failing and then wondering if I'd imagined it. I was about to get the carpet replaced. For now I have moved ds out into the spare room whilst I watch the social media posts & decide whether to accept Valspar's current position or wait & see for a few weeks. I've seen a couple of posts suggesting the sealant doesn't work properly. I guess I'm lucky in that we can sit it out for a little while.

Good luck with the baby when it arrives. In the meantime I guess you need to channel your energy into getting B&q/Valspar to pay up & get the paint in your house covered asap & get the windows open to get rid of the new paint smell as much as you can. Sounds like the best you can do for now. Xx

adinnes · 06/07/2018 10:21

Hi all! I have decided to create a quick survey to help everyone affected, including myself, by Valspar's terrible paint odour.

Please click the survey below to answer some very quick multiple choice questions on your experience and solutions (if any) so far.

If we can better understand everyone else's situation, then we will be more informed to take the right course of action ourselves.

Results from the survey may also help victims to push for greater compensation if they can show Valspar are insisting customers take steps that are proven to not solve the problem over the long term.

Please get involved and contribute to the survey regardless if you have found a solution or haven't even started yet! Everyone's input is highly valuable to each other and our strength grows immeasurably by sticking together and providing facts that Valspar cannot dispute.

Many thanks and good luck to you all!

SouthWestmom · 07/07/2018 20:35

I've done the survey but tbh I've completed it as a positive outcome - Valspar provided compensation and were polite and helpful
