By a friend today as I am not wound up about the situation with North Korea
She is up all night scared to death and is stockpiling food and is a far as I can see scaring her kids to death talking about it
I am the more if it happens it happens and there is dam all I can do about it so I am not worrying about it. Of course I give it the odd passing though and sometimes the news makes me go "oh shit" but that's it.
She said I am made of stone

I must be made of stone too.
Trump and Korea arent keeping me awake, plenty of other things do though.
But I'm old enough to remember Bay of Pigs. The nuclear tensions of the 1960s and cold war
Also the millenium bug
And 2012
Oh the Rapture dont forget that

BeyondThePage · 09/08/2017 17:28

It is hysteria being drummed up by "the media". It has not kept me awake.

The only thing in the news that ever kept me awake was the night when the initial space station was going to come crashing to earth - I was young and it was the first time I was "aware" (after the fact) of the media hype surrounding a supposed cataclysmic event - scared me to death that something might just drop from the sky on me and that would be that.

Goldfishshoals · 09/08/2017 17:28

Panic and worry never help anything.

I generally think you should do your best with the problems you can influence and pretty much ignore the ones you can't.

This is definitely one I can't do anything about, so I'm not losing any sleep over it.

The80sweregreat · 09/08/2017 17:28

we had all this in the 80s and nothing happened.
No point worrying really, what will be will be.
your not being unreasonable, or made of stone.

Atenco · 09/08/2017 17:30

Another one here made of stone. I mean if it happens, I doubt stockpiling would be much of a defence. If it was something that I felt I could do something about, like find somewhere safe in this world for my loved ones or, even better, some way of stopping them, I would, but as it is, it will be what it will be.

ShoesHaveSouls · 09/08/2017 17:32

I can't deny I'm worried about it - but I've not mentioned it to my dc once.

Nikephorus · 09/08/2017 17:36

I figure that if a nuclear bomb comes my way, me having a stockpile of food will be pointless. Besides, I'm far too busy worrying about the tiny things in life - I don't have time to worry about the life-ending stuff!

alltouchedout · 09/08/2017 17:36

It's fine to be scared and worried (I am, but I'm not stockpiling food or anything [what on earth would be the point? A few tins isn't going to get us safely through nuclear bloody war] and I am not talking to the dc about it and I am at work as normal), and it's fine not to be at all scared or worried. I don't think you're made of stone and I don't think people who are scared are being daft.

CockacidalManiac · 09/08/2017 17:40

If there's a nuclear attack, I want to be at ground zero thanks very much. I don't want to be wrapping family members in bin bags, while hiding under an upturned door eating cold beans from a tin.

oh don't worry OP

I'm usually overly stressed about stuff but this doesn't worry me either. You don't need a heart of stone to not worry - you can still be kind to everyone, live ethically, generally be decent etc and not feel the need to build a nuclear bunker.

CockacidalManiac · 09/08/2017 17:46

Perhaps she was just singing the Stone Roses.

Fresh8008 · 09/08/2017 17:54

Whats N.Korea got to do with stockpiling food in the UK, is geography so bad at school that we don't understand the term 'other side of the world'?

Do I need to make a tin foil hat? Better suggest your 'friend' visits a doctor!

Spudlet · 09/08/2017 17:57

North Korea recently successfully tested an ICBM - an inter-continental ballistic missile. The things that carry nuclear weapons, which they are also developing. There is no other side of the world in the case of nuclear warfare.

However I would very much hope that it won't come to that!

brightlightceiling · 09/08/2017 18:08

Why get worked up about it? The USA always has a favorite enemy to either wage a cold war or a real one on. The enemy changes at the same time as the president. As long as you're not in NK or Guam I would stockpile anything.

brightlightceiling · 09/08/2017 18:10

I don't understand why your friend is worried about NK and wasn't about Putin, Erdogan, ISIS, Afghanistan, Irak, the taliban etc.

Found your post interesting 😎

HelsinkiLights · 09/08/2017 18:42

If you're made of stone Party then I must be made of diamond (hardest substance) then. I'm really pissed off with the muppet in North Korea , not scared just very cross.
There's no point worrying as I can't change the situation.
Sounds like your friend has got "stuck" in her anxiety.

IvorHughJarrs · 09/08/2017 20:16

I am a bit concerned but we've all been here before but I read this earlier which sounds a bit reassuring

Sushi123 · 09/08/2017 20:19

She's bonkers, are we all to sit around worrying about the state of the world? We'd all be living in bunkers if that was the case. No matter what happens I'd like to live my life in the meantime, not sit like an anxious wreck surrounded by tinned goods

rolopolovolo · 09/08/2017 20:23

"bonkers"? Maybe she's having a breakdown. You're a terrible friend for looking down on her instead of SUPPORTING HER. People on this thread name calling her are just as bad.

Mysteriouscurle · 09/08/2017 21:18

I am probably made of stone too. When I heard the "fire and fury" line I thought it sounded ominous but then I lived my teen years in the cold war era convinced that the soviet union would unleash a nuclear hell on the western world. I'm not spending the next few years worrying about similar and tbh stockpiling food isnt probably going to make a difference should the worst happen my cupboards have goodness knows what lurking in the back of them and would probably last me a while anyway

Flopjustwantscoffee · 09/08/2017 21:24

Meh. If Trump actually looks like he's about to press the button I reckon Putin will kill him of. I can't see the CIA trying to stop him in those circumstances. And the same goes for the Chinese and Kim Jong il.

DorisMcSweeney · 09/08/2017 21:48

Last time I looked, North Korea was the other side of the world, so nuclear amageddon is far enough away to prevent me worrying. I might not book a holiday to Seoul in the near future, though.

LaArdilla · 09/08/2017 22:02

No, you're normal and she's batshit.

If she pissed her knicks at every little thing in the newspaper, she'd have no room in the pantry with all those cans.

The people who should be worried are the Koreans, North and South, who will actually be caught in the crossfire. If a nuke goes we're all dead anyway, tins of beans and bandanas tied around her kids foreheads ain't gonna help.
