To think we don't really need another adaptation of Pride and Prejudice?

According to the Radio Times the Poldark producers are planning an adaptation of P&P. Now God knows I love a bit of Austen, but there was the 1995 TV series and the 2005 film. And that's just in the last 25 years. And there was a stilted early 1980s version and that awful 1940-something film starring Laurence Olivier. And probably some other versions I've never even heard of. We've even had zombie P&P.

Jane herself must be rolling her eyes thinking 'have you NO imagination?'

There are so many other books that have been languishing patiently waiting for their moment in the spotlight. Let one of them be the prom queen for once!

Which book would you like to see adapted for the screen? I'd love to see a proper version of The Woman in White. I'd heard it was in the works but can't find anything on it.

P.S for all I'm complaining about yet another Pride and Prejudice that's not to say I wouldn't watch it. I just like to moan.

If this adaptation goes ahead I hope they do a modern one like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. That would be very interesting!!

misskelly · 08/08/2017 23:35

I agree, I can't understand the need to rehash the same books over and over again. I think The Women in White would be a good choice. I'd like to see Shirley by Charlotte Bronte.

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 08/08/2017 23:37

YABU those are now 12 and 22 years old Shock and the 2005 film was way too condensed so it's about time for a new one IMO, weirdly even period dramas date once on film/TV and it puts youngsters off watching. Plus a new Mr Darcy...

newtlover · 08/08/2017 23:38

do you think the same about Hamlet?
surely the proof is in the eating, a new adaptation may be good, or may not.I'm sure I read that someone is filming Longbourne I'm looking forward to that.

newtlover · 08/08/2017 23:39

please god no not a modern one

squoosh · 08/08/2017 23:41

Oh yes I read Longbourne. That would be interesting to see. I thought it was brilliant at illustrating how grindingly tough life was for domestic staff. Constantly scrubbing gussets, and making soap, and making eyes at the hottie in the barn, and emptying people's chamber pots, and rising before dawn.

YANBU.

I get sick to the back teeth of constant remakes, rehashes, sequels, and prequels, and so on. It's the same with films. How often does spiderman, batman, and superman need rehashing? Or alien and predator? And how many sequels do they need?

And then there are remakes of films, like war of the worlds and total recall and ghostbusters, and film 'series' like Star wars and Star trek and the fast and the furious and so on. And also films made from old tv series - starsky and hutch, charlie's angels, and the A team for example!

I mean FFS, there must be 50 million writers out there (many who are good!) who have fresh new ideas for films and tv programmes, but they often prefer to rehash something, or do a sequel, because it's an already established story, and (probably) has a fan base enough to make it a reasonable success.

It's the same with book publishers; they sign Kerry Katona and Katie chuffing Price and David Beckham for the 5th book about their life, rather than sign a new author with a new book. Because Katona and Price and Beckham are guaranteed to sell a few 10's of 1000's of copies.. Whereas a new author will struggle to sell more than a few 100, unless they are promoted and nurtured, and it will take time and effort and money to do this.

Really pisses me off!

CoughLaughFart · 08/08/2017 23:43

Don't like it, don't watch it. Buy a remote.

squoosh · 08/08/2017 23:43

Oh fart off you miserable farter.

OP posts:
Orangebird69 · 08/08/2017 23:44

Yanbu. The BBCs 1995 adaptation was the best ever. No need for anything else imo.

squoosh · 08/08/2017 23:45

Completely agree. Hollywood is officially OUT of ideas. They should pull the shutters down for a couple of years and take a break.

sigh there is always one

People are allowed to vent and complain about stuff they are not happy about you know! Hmm

SQUOOSH, yeah Hollywood IS out of ideas. So annoying.

As I said though, I bet many writers (new ones) have some. They just don't want to take the risk on them!

CoughLaughFart · 08/08/2017 23:56

BeeBee - 'always one' what? Who understands real life?

Rent a brain.

SenecaFalls · 08/08/2017 23:56

I agree, but only because David Bamber is the definitive Mr. Collins. No one else should ever try to do that role.

CoughLaughFart · 08/08/2017 23:58

Squoosh - I assume the moronic fart comment was addressed to me? Get a grip.

squoosh · 08/08/2017 23:59

Run along.

CoughLaughFart · 09/08/2017 00:01

Oscar Wilde hast got anything to worry about, has he?

squoosh · 09/08/2017 00:01

Seneca Tom Hollander was far too good looking and far too un-obsequious to make a convincing Mr Collins. That role most definitely belongs to David Bamber.

OP posts:

Hast?

Shirley by Charlotte Bronte is an excellent suggestion.

It's such an interesting snapshot of the industrial unrest of the times and would translate very well onto the small screen.

I also agree OP about Pride and Prejudice. In my mind no one will ever come close to the perfection of Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, so why bother?

squoosh · 09/08/2017 00:05

I think No Name would be a good adaptation too. Wilkie Collins seems to be ignored for some reason whereas Dickens is never off the screen.

Too soon after p and p and zombies.... need to wait a few more years. I would like an adaptation of the Tenant of Wildfell Hall that would be really good.

quencher · 09/08/2017 00:07

If am not mistaken. I read somewhere that Hollywood has done about 12 or 14 adaptations already. And they are doing another one soon. And these are in recent times.

Beebee7 · 09/08/2017 00:16

Hollywood has done 10 or 12 adaptations already? Shock

Beebee7 · 09/08/2017 00:17

@CoughLaughFart

'always one' what? Who understands real life?

Who pissed on your fucking cornflakes? What nasty aggressive insulting comments you are coming out with!

I mean ALWAYS ONE who has to be bloody awkward and pedantic.

And yes I do mean you dear.

And I will borrow your brain thanks. It must be in brilliant condition, as it's hardly ever been used.
