Bad tooth pain in 5 yr old

Sorry I'm posting here for traffic

Ds is 5, has had 3 nasty knocks to his two front teeth in the past, they're slightly black now!

Today he's been complaining a lot of tooth pain in one of them, but anytime I touch to see if it's wobbly, he jumps back because if the pain, so I subsequently can't see!

I have phoned the dentist, were booked in for Thursday am, but would really appreciate any one else's experiences!
Thank you

No advice but I do feel sorry for the poor boy. Make sure he has painkillers.

goldensyrupisshit · 08/08/2017 14:50

Keep topped up with pain killers and offer a soft diet so nothing too hard to bite into not too cold as his teeth could be very sensitive. My middle son whacked his two front teeth off some steps when on holiday, they went black as they were dying and the dentist left them to come out on their own. Good news is the trauma didn't affect his adult teeth.

@goldensyrupisshit glad to hear they didn't effect his teeth! I'm really quite concerned about his teeth, he's been really hard to keep up with dental hygiene and now this!

I've just given calpol, hopefully it'll start to work soon

Hope your little boy feels better soon. Out if interest, why do you say it's hard to keep up with his dental hygiene?

doingitallagaintoday · 08/08/2017 15:03

@SweetieDarling11 it's a bit of a battle to get him to brush, he's brushing once a day but that's after tears and a strop, even though we've watched many videos on dental hygiene

I've always found an ibuprofen based painkiller to be more effective with teeth. Poor pet, my dd had a knock to her teeth and we had the same experience as goldensyrup

goldensyrupisshit · 08/08/2017 15:07

Also where the brushing is concerned whilst he's in pain get some Anbesol to apply before a gentle brush also you can get kiddies mouthwash anythings better than nothing.

doingitallagaintoday · 08/08/2017 15:19

@goldensyrupisshit Thank you, I hadn't heard of that before, either of them. So will definitely pick up on the way home!

Have some ibuprofen at home also, all I could find here (working) was calpol but hopefully it'll do for now.

I've allowed some cartoons for now to help take his mind off of it, he's laying calmly but still not happy 😞

If he's in a lot of pain maybe ring 111 to see if they can point you in the direction of an emergency dentist. Toothache is just the worst pain ever Sad

doingitallagaintoday · 08/08/2017 15:24

@goldensyrupisshit good idea, I had already thought that he could do with being seen today but have no clue how to go about that! So good point there, thank you!

Toothpain really is the worst!

My sympathies. Dental pain is always horrible. In addition to the Calpol you're giving him, maybe wrap an ice cube in a clean cloth cloth and let him hold that against his mouth/gum - sometimes the coldness is soothing/numbing. Might not help but worth a try.

goldensyrupisshit · 08/08/2017 15:29

Good luck hope you manage to get a quicker appointment. Let us know how you get on Smile

Also Op, if tooth pain is really bad then it's worth ringing around all the other dentists on the area to see if anyone will see him even if he's not an existing patient.

With teeth cleaning, none of my dcs enjoy it but I clean their teeth twice a day whether they like it or not. I approach it in a non-negotiable manner. They squirm but I scrub their teeth from one side to the other, inside and out, and finish with a quick scrub on their tongue for fresh breath. I use a kids electric toothbrush which speeds the job up. They are the character battery-run ones from supermarkets and usually cost £3 or so on offer but they do a really good job and it's worth it for their teeth and only the same price as a box of ice lollies or sweets or whatever.

I tell the kids that if they don't have their teeth brushed their teeth will go yellow and brown and fall out. I have also shown them pictures of cavities in teeth (not the scary horrible ones where all the teeth are rotten although as they get older I certainly would) but a simple example of what a tooth with a hole looks like as I don't think they can really believe that teeth get actual holes from poor hygiene.

I still brush my 8yo teeth on the advice of dentists. A 5yo is too young to leave to brushing alone and once a day isn't great as he won't be doing a good enough job by himself. I know it makes you feel mean when they hate having teeth done and you are brushing their teeth throughly, but teeth are so important it's one you have to take on the chin.
