Breeding spiders for moths

NewDaddie · 08/08/2017 11:47

I'm trying to catch and breed spiders to increase their number in the void spaces in my homes to get rid of moths but my neighbours aren't very supportive of my plan.

Any tips would help as I've been getting them from fruit trees and car wing mirrors etc but I've not been very successful so far and they keep on dying the poor things. The bigger ones are easier to catch without squashing but they don't survive being moved for longer than an hour.

I would guess the problem being that you would need house spiders if they're going to live indoors (even in wall voids) whereas outdoor spiders collected from cars/trees etc won't suit the indoor habitat.

Try leaving a window or two open overnight. That's when new house spiders arrive in my house.

NewDaddie · 08/08/2017 22:34

Thanks soup I'll try leaving all the windows open but I was hoping to get loads and loads in the spaces between the cavity walls and before I finish putting down the flooring.

I read this as "breastfeeding spiders for months".

Think it's time for bed.

Beebee7 · 08/08/2017 22:40

I hope you live in the antarctic OP. Shock

NewDaddie · 08/08/2017 22:41

Now that would be an interesting thread. And yes it's definitely bed time

Na night Trombone

I would rather have all my clothes got eaten by moths, than live with spiders. Jesus.

Ikillpotplants · 08/08/2017 22:47

I too read this as "breastfeeding spiders for moths". I thought it was an interesting alternative to the usual breastfeeding v ff threads....

This made me smile.

Unfortunately though I think you're actually consigning spiders to a sad death- they can be surprisingly delicate things, and as soupforbrains says, they spiders you'll be picking up from the garden aren't suited to an indoor life. House spiders are actually a set of species that have evolved to live in human habitation (in terms of temperatures, humidity, food sources, web types etc) and the poor little things from your apple trees may not be up to the job!

You'd probably be better off deterring moths in the first place- I think cedar wood is supposed to be a good natural deterrent? Remember though moths are completely and utterly harmless (apart from some clothes loving moths I guess), so just use cedar in the wardrobes and I wouldn't worry too much :)

perper · 08/08/2017 22:50

(also, make sure you've not blocked all the teeny holes in your house, leave the loft undisturbed etc- you'll get as many spiders as feel comfortable cohabiting in your house in the end)

NewDaddie · 08/08/2017 23:00

Maybe you could send me your house spiders beebee & genghi

I think you need to encourage bats instead. Or get some pet lizards.

NewDaddie · 08/08/2017 23:13

@perper I tried cedar wood and those plug in sonic deterrent thingys but they didn't work. The main culprit was our wool carpets and now I'm renovating I got rid of the carpet and I want to get the clothes eating devil moths gone for good too

I actually wanted to block all the holes everywhere and do that 'house envelope' sealing thing but it wasn't allowed because it would disrupt my neighbours ventilation.

I also don't like leaving the little holes because they encourage mice too.

LOL @Newdaddie Grin

I don't actually have many spiders. I think the cats eat them!

perper · 08/08/2017 23:55

Ah I see. Do you now have a complete set of new carpets then? If so make sure you vacuum right into corners regularly etc to prevent an infestation taking hold- it'd probably be worth buying a carpet cleaner yourself actually and doing a proper clean every so often if you think your house is prone. Moth balls/lavender sachets under furniture if you don't have pets that could reach will help too. Not sure what else to suggest though I'm afraid!

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 09/08/2017 00:04

Oh this is a genius idea. I fucking hate moths, the flappy cunts.

I do a similar thing though, in that I hardly ever remove a web as I'm convinced it may one day bring about the demise of an evil moth. Yuck.

Pastamancer · 09/08/2017 11:12

If by collecting all the spiders you are killing them then please come down here and start collecting them. The less spiders in the world, the happier everyone will be

RandomDent · 09/08/2017 11:15

Spiders are ace. This is a great idea. I only move spiders because my wuss husband doesn't like them. Never squash them though.
