15 stone 7.

15 and a half stone. I'm not even 5'3.

Like many overweight people I've been on the diet circuit.

Gastric band
slimming world
weight watchers
myfitnesspal

The only thing that ever worked is a VLCD so as from now I am back on it. I just can't believe how massive I am.

Also a lot of weight loss advice doesn't work for me because I have VERY poor eating habits. So portions don't apply because I don't really eat meals.

I started off by doing Cambridge weight plan. Purely because you get one on one consultations each week. I started at 14.7 and i am now 12.7 with still 2 stone to go. I came off plan as my partner was home for 8 weeks. And i actually managed to maintain. He's away Monday and I am starting Exante diet on Monday. I've tried their products before which are fine. I know I can do exante no problem because I did so well with Cambridge the only difference is there isn't the one on one action with the consultant (and saving £130 a month!). I think a huge difference is having constant online support. Seeing before and after pictures. It will be worth it!! Good luck to you, I'll be following your post. Xx

blackberrypickinginaugust · 08/08/2017 12:33

I'm doing Cambridge too!

OP do you think you could try eating meals?

DoreenGray · 08/08/2017 12:35

I had the exact same experience in February this year, OP, I couldn't believe the numbers flashing on the scales. I had avoided weighing myself for years, convincing lying to myself that I was overweight, but only just! The reality made me feel absolutely disgusted with myself and yes, like you, physically sick to my stomach. At 5'8 I'm fairly tall, but seeing the numbers rest on 17 stone 2lbs gave me the shock and shake I needed to make some changes.

6 months on and I'm almost 3 & half stone lighter, feeling fitter and more confident than I've felt in decades. I still have some way to go to achieve a BMI in the healthy range, but I actually feel I can do it this time.
I've been the following Slimming World diet plan, without attending any group. This wouldn't work for everyone, I know that, but it works for me. I weigh myself once a week, as close to the same day and time as possible. My weight loss has been slow frustratingly slow at times but steady. There's hasn't been a single week since I've started that I haven't lost weight, even if only a small amount.

I wish you all the best in your weight loss journey. It won't be overnight but if you view every loss as an achievement, be it a small loss of even a half pound, or a big loss of several pounds, the feeling of success is a great motivator to keep going. Good luck!

bear28 · 08/08/2017 12:35

There were times I struggled doing sole source but if I was really struggling I would have a boiled egg or some chicken. That takes the edge off. Once you are in ketosis it's physically easier. It's getting over the hunger barrier that's the real challenge!!

blackberrypickinginaugust · 08/08/2017 12:36

Not at the moment. When I have lost weight.

OP posts:
hiphopcat · 08/08/2017 12:39

Hiphop people can post whatever they want. But I know what works for me (and what doesn't!)

Please yourself then @blackberypickinginaugust

I wouldn't have bothered wasting 15 minutes of my life posting on this thread, if I'd known you already had it all in hand, and know exactly what you are doing, and exactly how to lose the weight and so on and so on.............

Still utterly confused as to why you even posted here, when you were just going to dismiss the advice and views and opinions that were not what you wanted to hear.

Toodles. Enjoy your life, and your OWN weight loss plan! Confused

OP didn't ask for advice HipHop. She made it clear she'd chosen a diet in the very first post. That's not to say people can't offer advice but when it's unsolicited they need to realise it may be ignored. Some of your posts have come across as quite snarky.

PumpkinSpiceEverything · 08/08/2017 12:52

Try plant based! It'll help you to cut out all of the processed foods and learn to make really nutritious meals yourself.

blackberrypickinginaugust · 08/08/2017 12:53

Actually hiphop my OP said this

like many overweight people I've been on the diet circuit ... the only thing that ever worked is a VLCD so as from no I am back on it

I obviously regret it if you are angry that I'm not acting on your advice but in a way I am as I will be avoiding chips and the other things you listed.

However I am not going to apologise as I don't think you read my OP properly.

I also must say you have reacted exceptionally strongly to someone not acting on your advice and it is worth remembering that is part of posting on here.

OP posts:
Loubilou09 · 08/08/2017 13:02

hiphop - you are in the wrong here.

The OP didn't ask for advice and she hasn't dismissed any advice neither has she been defensive. The only person coming across badly in this thread is you.

DownstairsMixUp · 08/08/2017 13:03

I do believe in cutting carbs, I think we eat far too many but not actual low carb. If I want to lose weight quick I stick to under 50 grams a day, if I'm not too fussed 100grams a day. Both see a weight loss. If I just fancy maintaining I don't let myself have crap carbs more than in two meals (talking white bread, potatoes, pasta) remember veg have carbs. Under 20 grams is too little for me and most people. At the moment I'm following the old weight watchers as it always worked for me and I am going on holiday in 3 weeks. I don't feel hungry on it but I don't feel full all the time if you see what i mean? I don't believe there is any diet where you can have that full feeling all the time like after you've had a big fat roast? The name of the app is pro value dairy btw if you're interested. Example day today (If i stick to this I'll lose about 2lbs this week, 5'5 and 10 stone 2)

Breakfast: Granola (low sugar one, some of the supermarket ones are terrible) with natural yoghurt and a drizzle of honey

Lunch: Tomato soup with three slices of cracker bread

Dinner: Two fajitas, lots of peppers and onions to bulk it out, I still have two tablespoons of sour cream and a sprinke of cheese. Will also have a side of veg with the fajitas. Sometimes I mix it up and have one fajita instead with a side of rice and veg

I drink lots of water in the day and exercise around 5 times a week to, though I aim for every day if something is coming up. I also have a fitbit which I aim to hit 10k steps a day (easy in the summer hols)

Alyosha · 08/08/2017 13:22

It's tough isn't it?

2 years ago I got on the scales and it said 11 stone, I was very shocked. I thought I was about 9st 10! I hadn't noticed clothes fitting any differently. Or rather I had but was in a bit of denial.

It was very hard to lose the weight, and only now have I reached 9 stone.

You can do it, but you do need to think about a long term way of life that you can stick to. Many people have great success with 5:2 or IF as you not constantly "on" as it were. It isn't easy by any stretch of the imagination and it is tough to keep it off, but nothing worth having is easy as they say!

Alyosha · 08/08/2017 13:23

Downstairs - most of the week I am never really full but I have one "cheat" day per week where I allow myself 3000 kcals. Totally worth it for that fuller feeling and longer term helps me to motivate myself to keep to the plan during the week.

Obviously it's very individual though, wouldn't work for everyone.

LordTrash · 08/08/2017 13:26

I don't know how much I weigh, but I know I need to lose some pdq - because of the way my body stores fat, I become very uncomfortable and can't breathe easily if I go over a certain weight. Also, all my bras nearly kill me. I'm at that stage too and HATING it. Can't sleep, can't relax.

Portion sizes and more exercise are my masterplan, plus limiting carbs and crap.

dataandspot · 08/08/2017 13:29

Sammysquiz

That article is really long ,badly written and it's difficult to extract what the writer is trying to say!

unlucky83 · 08/08/2017 13:30

mrs no it is easier to lose weight at the start the larger you are.
You burn more calories because you are carrying extra weight -so you use more calories to do everything - just eg walking to the bathroom. Even doing nothing - your heart has to pump blood round a larger area, you have more cells just doing their thing, using energy.

Its the reason (thin) people use ankle and wrist weights or carry a weighted back pack to increase the effectiveness of a jog etc. As you lose weight you burn fewer calories doing the same amount of exercise so you need to take fewer in to continue losing weight.
Why fatter people get out of breath easily - that walk takes more energy/work than someone who isn't overweight.
OP with respect - you said the only diet that works for me -but it obviously doesn't in the long run ...it is a temporary fix. I think people are trying to say you need a rethink if you are going to tackle this long term.
You can still eat smaller portions not eating meals - if you normally have 2 biscuits have one or even half - eat a full pack of crisp eat half, have 7 snacks a day eat 6...
If you make it too restrictive/hard on yourself you won't be able to keep it up long term - yes you can lose a lot of weight quickly but then you will keep falling off, and then stop the diet and it will go back on.

(I'm overweight and I used to stress about it all the time ...diets etc but now I have just accepted that I will never be thin -so concentrate on never getting too big...currently trying to shift a bit again as I have piled weight on in the last 6 months...)

I'm overweight and when I was younger used to do all kinds of diets and lose weight and put it back on again. I currently am aiming just never to go over a certain amount ...and I did quite recently so am working to get that down.

unlucky83 · 08/08/2017 13:32

Whoops thought that last paragraph had disappeared - obviously it hadn't

MrsOverTheRoad · 08/08/2017 13:37

Unlucky but you said this

The bigger you are the more calories you need to live

And I thought that only pertained to bigger people of a healthy weight?

whereismyparachute · 08/08/2017 13:37

MrsOverTheRoad, that is really informative, thanks for posting.

whereismyparachute · 08/08/2017 13:37

That sounded sarcastic, I meant thanks for posting the article.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 08/08/2017 13:39

Have you encountered the No S Diet? It's about slow weight loss but learning how to eat in moderation. The nice thing is that you don't have to count calories or cut out any food groups, plus you get weekends off. It's very slow but it's very sensible.

Lucysky2017 · 08/08/2017 13:45

There is one way to lose weight - eat fewer calories. If eating very low calorie works (of course it will work for just about everyone) then keep at it. In fact intermittent fasting eg nothing between dinner and lunch next day and no snacks ever at all is a pretty good way of losing weight. In my view if your lower calories can be mostly good fats, medium protein and loads of veg so much the better as it's sustainable longer term rather than coffee and chocolate

The Newcastle diabetes study put people on 800 calories and it worked. Obviously if you eat loads after any diet the weight goes back on however.

Everyone has their pet theory but the science is with you and most of everyone else - whatever helps you eat fewer calories then you expend will lose you the weight.
