Yes I know it's fb and I have a choice to be on there but... come on!! I have friends (not just fb friends, real actual sane and sensible friends) who share the most awful, obviously fake warnings along the lines of 'DO NOT EAT BANANAS WITH BLUE STICKERS ON THEM THEY'RE ALL INFECTED WITH EBOLA ...RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!' etc. Why why why?!

I think it's fair to remember that people are not necessarily stupid, they just have't yet learned the right skills, or haven't practised enough that applying those skills is automatic

What skills are necessary for a very rudimentary application of logic?

HensAndRabbits · 09/08/2017 20:51

We've got 10 top of the range campers to give away. We can't possibly sell them because they're last years stock. Like and share to enter. Don't worry about the fact there's no closing date or that this page doesn't even sell campers in the first place. Just like and share and do it now.

If you ever look at the comments under these things there are literally thousands of people commenting about why they should win, where they'd go in their camper etc.

MyPatronusIsAUnicorn · 09/08/2017 21:23

I've found my people, thank fuck!

I have 2 friends who share all this crap. One, bless her, isn't hugely intelligent and usually laughs when I point out it's a hoax, the other completely ignores my snopes links me and carries on. Nearly everyone does those bloody stupid 'competitions." Why has no one twigged that these companies really wouldn't give this stuff away? Then there are all the 'I know who will share this' crap and the yellow pants status crap.

I really should come off Facebook.

I also heard about the NT 'kidnap' story and knew it was fake as soon as I read it. Unfortunately visited gulliable relative today and was regaled with gasp "did you hear what happened?" Yes I did and no it's not true. Pretty sure she doesn't believe me. She will believe everything the local paper and the DM tells her.

At the risk of sounding like a troll a relative won a holiday after doing a like and share thibfy

It's not hard to tell the proper ones from the total bollocks.

StealthPolarBear · 09/08/2017 21:28

Ah OK. I didnt realise there was a distinction. Though obviously there is :)

Voice0fReason · 09/08/2017 21:30

Some people don't even look at what they share.
I remember pointing out to a friend of mine that the reminder they had posted that to put the clocks forward this weekend, was not only 2 years old, but was for Australia Grin

CockacidalManiac · 09/08/2017 21:31

Yes; it's the difference between a holiday park/hotel doing a 'like, share and win' to advertise to potential customers, and the obvious like-farming bullshit as mentioned by other posters.

CockacidalManiac · 09/08/2017 21:32

Nah; they're just thick as mince.

CotswoldStrife · 09/08/2017 21:44

A FB group I was on (for a medical condition) had members from all over the world and one of them shared a photo post 'find this bloke who was disrespectful/thief/can't remember the accusation now' and I did post to ask if they actually knew the accuser as they could be circulating the photo of someone completely innocent. I know you will be as surprised as I was to find they had no idea who started it Hmm

Rather more worryingly, I do have someone who seems to be a fan of the Britain-First type posts and freely shares them, despite them obviously being wrong (illegal immigrants getting stuff is a good example!).

Six likes will save this child from this terrible virus, a picture of some random lady with one leg, she's gorgeous and it says "people think I'm ugly because I have one leg' please like to show support, type Amen to cure cancer, one of my faves is peppa pig causes autism, the whiny brat causes my ears to bleed but not fekin autism x

Girty999 · 09/08/2017 22:22

Ooh Doreen lost five stones in ONE week drinking this detox tea (picture of someone blowing out their tummy then another of them sucking it in) it's a miracle and only £17 a week 'only to be used as part of a calorie controlled diet and drink 2 letters of water a day' xx

BillyDaveysDaughter · 10/08/2017 10:25

I can't bear that fucking "skinny coffee" thing doing the rounds, some before and after shots of a vaguely normal/stout looking girl vs an impossibly gorgeous curvaceous photoshopped after-shot after she lost 3 stone in 2 weeks drinking some rancid concoction. Just fuck the fuck off.

A dear friend of mine, a lovely girl who has dealt with some major shit in her life but who can be very childlike and naive, tends to post the kind of nonsense we've spoken of on this thread. Her worst was that one "If drug addicts can get drugs for their addiction on the NHS, how come chemotherapy is not free?" (or something like that).

That just makes no sense in this country, I think it's an American thing. It's utter bollocks. She also shares dreadful racist crap via whatever passes for EDL these days (Britain First is it?). But I daren't correct her because her fragile ego can't take my perceived betrayal. I just cringe and move on. Sad
