to cheat at Slimming World

ineedamoreadultieradult · 06/08/2017 21:17

I can't afford to join Slimming World. I need to lose weight I have crept up from 9st 0 to 10st 8 in a year. If I use the various different Slimming World recipes I can get online etc will it still work even though I have no clue about Sums and HEA and HEB's. I was just planning on eating only Syn free recipes as I'm guessing a Syn us a bad thing. Good idea or a waste of time?

Complete waste of time and absolutely unsustainable. Slimming world does work, but you have to follow the plan.

Get onto my fitness pal if your want to do it for free. There is literally pages and pages of advice, you can log all your food, treats included, and see how you go.

Groovee · 06/08/2017 21:26

There's lots of Facebook groups you can join where you can find out info.

Redglitter · 06/08/2017 21:26

Slimming World like most diets only works if you follow it properly. Not using HEA HEB or Syns means it's not going to work properly. If it's SW you want to follow why not join for a couple of months get your head round the diet then go alone

Off to look up My Fitness Pal, thanks.

There's also an offer where it's £5 off in group so you could get the books and follow at home.

StillDrivingMeBonkers · 06/08/2017 21:28

'Syn' stands for synergy not 'sin' as in sinful.
Synergy means balance.

Ilovechocolatetoomuch · 06/08/2017 21:29

I would just count your calories. Get an app and work out how many you need to eat to loose weight. Mine was very low (think 1100) it meant I could still eat a mars bar if I wanted but that was dinner gone lol.

redrobinblue · 06/08/2017 21:29

I joined and got the booklet with all the info in. But never went back as wouldn't work for me. I have the info in the joining folder and happy to post if you'd make use of it. It's currently in my recycling pile.

GlitterNails · 06/08/2017 21:30

Why don't you join when there is a free offer on, get the books and it all explained to you, then carry on at home?

ineedamoreadultieradult · 06/08/2017 21:31

That would be brilliant redrobinblue I'll attempt to PM you.

Its possible to do it alone, but for it to really work the apps etc are invaluable. I know you say you vant afford it but is there any way you coild find the money - for eg stop having a weekly takeaway or going out every fortnight? I find going to group really motivating.

If not, have a look at the sw boards on here. Really supportive. I persomally woulsnt just eat syn free stuff - you need a bit of what you fancy and i know when i deprive myself, i binge. The 5-15syns are there to be used😊 the healthy extras are wuite easy -minimins are good for advice on those. Syns arent a bad thing - its all about moderation and a balanced diet and cutting things out wont work in the long term

It does require time and energy to cook though, not very easy to eat out or buy things on the go, but once you get used to it thats ok.
I know youve not asked but to give you an idea, an average day for me is
Porridge abd strawberries (healthy extras) for breakfast
A salad (either homemade or from work, synning the dressing) or soup, sometimes last nights leftovers
Dknners bolognese, carbonara, curries, stir fries, chicken with veg and stuffed mushrooms, burgers etc
I do have 'treats' - curlt wurly, wine, sweets, cake etc
I train with a pt twice a week, plus try to do 2 exercise classes on top, and walk the dog

The Carbs & Cals app is good. It's used by diabetes specialist nurses and recommended by dietitians as a way of logging intake.

What's great about it is that it's visual. Lots of pictures of portion sizes to help you gauge the calories (or carbs in my case) and seeing the difference portion size makes.

redrobinblue · 06/08/2017 21:42

Ill log on to the laptop tomorrow (only use my phone) to check for it!

Finallyatlast · 06/08/2017 21:49

You can buy the starter pack from Slimming World off eBay. You get with it everything you would get given at the initial meeting so explains to you exactly how to follow the plan etc. It also includes diet sheets for you to complete. There is also a voucher for you to join a group in case you want to do this.

featheryfancy · 06/08/2017 22:00

I think just going for a week or two to get the basic hang of things and get the beginners books would be helpful. But there are Facebook groups with lots of members and non members helping each other with the plan.
I prefer and lost more weight using MyFitnessPal anyway which is completely free

Bedraggledmumoftwo · 06/08/2017 22:03

I did s w for years just following someone else's books. Never been to a meeting but it's easy enough to do at home with the info. I did buy a syn directory at one stage so I could count properly but really you just need the initial info

liquidrevolution · 06/08/2017 22:15

stilldriving actually syn used to be sin. They changed it and made up some gobbledegook story a good few years back. If you check out rebelfit on facebook you can see the old advert where it clearly says sin.

Greebz · 08/08/2017 12:06

Another recommendation for My Fitness Pal / MFP! I switched from SW about a year ago as couldn't afford the SW fees either.
I don't know how tall you are but dependent on your BMI you might be able to get SW vouchers from your GP?

MrsPinkCock · 08/08/2017 12:12

I joined SW to get my head around it, then cancelled my subscription. It's expensive up front, probably for that reason.

Anyway, I'm at goal weight but still follow their cooking principles (I don't use oils in cooking, have worked out healthy portion sizes, and only use recipes with tons of veg).

Personally though I think in your situation you'd be better off using MyFitnessPal. I still track my calories now, but only on days where I suspect I'm either dramatically under or over what I should be eating.

Find a TDEE calculator online to work out what you need to eat in a day to lose weight and add that into MFP (IME, MFP doesn't give you enough calories for the day). You can also eat back your exercise calories and still lose weight, which SW doesn't allow you to do.

Migraleve · 08/08/2017 15:23

It's expensive up front,

Not really. Every other week there is a free join offer in closer/woman or similar magazine.
