To want to kick up a fuss??

DH and I are in holiday in santorini, we have been looking forward to this for a whole year because it is our delayed honeymoon (or mooniversary, as we have been calling it)

The hotel is nice (but basic) and it is run by a lovely, helpful young woman. We went to her 2 days ago to tell her that we had found three very large cockroaches crawling across the floor of our studio apt (I'm talking nearly 2 inches long, absolutely fucking massive). She sprayed some stuff around the sink area where she says they tend to pop up, and we were cockroach free for 24 hours. However, I just woke DH up screaming because I saw one strutting along the floor, bold as brass. He is now under a glass, and I am on the bed, feeling totally miserable that our much longed for Greek holiday is being ruined by these little bastards. We have asked to move rooms because we are here until 15th Aug, but she seemed very unwilling to move us. Lots of people will be checking out/arriving on Tuesday, so do you think I should start being a bit cross with her? We have been really understanding and discreet so far. Sad

Fuck that. Roaches are my worst nightmare. Just thinking about one is making me feel queasy. Jesus you poor thing.
I'd be kicking up a stink. Loudly. It's unacceptable.

Out of interest what star rating does the accommodation you're staying in have?

Caprianna · 06/08/2017 16:54

Are they not everywhere in Greece? If you are staying in luxury hotel YANBU, if not YABU I think

wannabestressfree · 06/08/2017 16:56

lol cockroaches are everywhere even in the nicest accommodation. I am not sure you are going to get rid of them!

youarenotkiddingme · 06/08/2017 17:00

I take it you've ask for a room in another country? One without cockroaches?!

Otherwise what exactly would you like her to do about creatures that reside in the county?

The best you can do is ask for a spray for the room.

MartinJD · 06/08/2017 17:03

wannabestressfree: I'm not sure what hovels you holiday in but cockroaches are certainly not a feature in the rooms of any place we have stayed in. Simply unacceptable! Ask to be moved OP.

Best,
M.JD

I know that cockroaches can be a part of life in Greece, but we have stayed in Greek islands 5+ times and this is the first time we have encountered the problem. I am trying not to be too much of a princess about this, but they are SO GROSS. It is a 2 star hotel, but we paid £1600 to be here for 2 weeks and I would love to spend that time not freaking out about cockroaches Envy

Are you in Imerovigli?

Polly85 · 06/08/2017 17:18

No we are in Kamari x

Cockroaches often fly in, or climb up drains. Have you been keeping all the doors and windows closed? And kept the plugs in the sinks and baths? They are very common in hot countries. You can buy a spray in the supermarket, or holiday in cooler countries in future. Even fumigatating the apartments cannot prevent them flying in.

Loopytiles · 06/08/2017 17:22

Horrible! I would be seeking another room.

happypoobum · 06/08/2017 17:28

Tbh I wouldn't be that surprised at cockroaches in a 2 star hotel in Greece in August.

You can try changing rooms but am not convinced that will solve it.

If it makes you feel any better, I stayed on the Queen Mary in Long Beach and it was a cockroach palace Sad

Ropsleybunny · 06/08/2017 17:30

Cockroaches are found where it's hot. Go to Alaska next time.

Liiinoo · 06/08/2017 17:32

If one room has cockroaches every room will have them. And probably every building in the vicinity too. Ask for or buy some bug spray and use it morning and night. It won't get rid of them but they will probably crawl off to another room.

Dumdedumdedum · 06/08/2017 17:32

OP, either buy some cockroach killer spray from the local supermarket or insist the hotel manager sprays everywhere again (cockroaches love the wet, so drains are the important places to spray) and leaves you with the spray for future protection. If you do change rooms, you might find you have the same problems - I'm not sure that cockroaches respect the star-ratings of hotels anywhere in the world Grin

BeyondThePage · 06/08/2017 17:35

A 2 star hotel
Greece
August

Buy a spray, put plugs in sinks/bath/shower - or invert a tumbler over it if no plugs, mostly come up from drains, but they will fly in if you leave any window/door open for even a short time. No crumbs/food left out at all.

If your room has roaches - ALL the rooms will have roaches - moving won't help.

Genghi · 06/08/2017 17:35

Cockroaches in a 2 star hotel is not surprising. Not much you can do unless you want to upgrade to a 4-5 star resort.

WooWooSister · 06/08/2017 17:37

I'd ask to be moved. I've stayed in lots of hot countries and in some very basic hotels and never had cockroaches in my room.
The only place that had them was in the UK and we came home early.

stargazer101 · 06/08/2017 17:44

We have encountered cockroaches in the plushest of accommodation abroad. I always get a tin of bug spray and spray around door frames and windows etc every few days and that usually keeps them at bay.

wannabestressfree · 06/08/2017 18:51

Oh no stargazer you must have only stayed in hovels as MR M whatisface TJ knobhead said so.... and he knows everything......all the holidays I have ever been on (wow)

Actually I tend not to stay in hovels but I am a realist about which animals/ insects/ creepy crawlies are indigenous to a country in peak heat....
