This flooring situation

I had new laminate flooring laid 6 months ago. I found someone on Gumtree who said he would lay flooring in 2 rooms and a hallway for £220. Anyway he came here and laid it and I paid him, about 3 months after this the flooring started to go funny, it has 'raised' in several places and now over lapped on itself. It's so bad that if you step on one bit of it another bit pops up! It's tripped me up and others a few times. I've actually never seen flooring like it! Anyway after googling it turns out the man who laid it has not left an expansion gap and that it is needed for laminate flooring as it expands. So it has expanded and has had nowhere to go other than to overlap on itself. Basically the whole flooring is now unusable and all needs to be ripped up and replaced. It cost £600 in total to get the flooring and have it laid. A friend has suggested I ask the man to come back pretend I have more work for him then when he gets here tell him he has to sort the whole thing out a relay new flooring for free. I'm not sure, wibu to do that? He is obviously not going to come back out of the kindness of his heart as I don't know anything about him or where he lives so he doesn't need to.

Choose a cowboy, get robbed. Chalk it up to experience and get someone decent in and pair a fair price. Or learn how to do it yourself.

AtHomeDadGlos · 06/08/2017 14:30

*pay, not pair

Dancingfairy · 06/08/2017 14:33

A fair price? It's how much HE asked for, I didn't realise it was unusual to get people of Gumtree since loads of people use it/advertise on there.

Did he use underlay? Do you have hot pipes or underfloor heating? Some movement is normal but not to the extent of trip hazards.

Dancingfairy · 06/08/2017 14:39

No I don't. He didn't leave an expansion gap, sorry to drip feed but the op was so long but at first I thought the flooring was the issue and contacted wickes with pictures of the flooring. They confirmed there was no expansion gap therefore not laid correctly so not there problem. Underlay was used.

You should always get a couple of quotes and try to get someone recommended.

SabineUndine · 06/08/2017 14:48

Goodness, I'm looking to get laminate flooring put down in 4 rooms and expect to pay about £800 for labour. This is because I want a nice job doing. It's a false economy to go wi the lowest quote. You want a specialist.

Dancingfairy · 06/08/2017 14:54

Erm ok he was obviously ok with the amount otherwise he wouldn't have asked for that much he would have asked for more. And without seeing the size of the rooms it's not comparable to how much any one else has paid. I paid him what he asked. And he was the only one local to me on there and even then he was around 40 minutes away.

Have you actually contacted him about it? Yes okay, he might tell you to get lost but you haven't really anything to lose.

LostInShoebiz · 06/08/2017 15:09

OP, no one is saying you tried to rip him off but clearly the price was too low. The price was not "fair" in respect of market rate, not unfair to him.

Justdontknow4321 · 06/08/2017 15:10

Even if you try and get him to your house under the delusion that you have more work and when you don't and want work for free he's just going to walk out, it's not like your going to lock him in so that makes no sense at all, why don't you just message him and see what he says. Yes he may so no but you might aswell try. If he says no then there is nothing you can do and your just have to find someone else!

billysboy · 06/08/2017 15:16

Your floor layer has not read the instructions properly if at all , it should have an expansion gap around it

Get a reputable builder to come in and correct it make sure there is no damp underneath

Get two quotes and ask for a reference that you can call if you cannot get a recommendation from someone you trust

Good people are always busy not advertising for work on Gumtree

AtHomeDadGlos · 06/08/2017 22:43

I could charge you £200, fair price to me. Then again I've never laid laminate flooring...

missymayhemsmum · 06/08/2017 23:12

Try and get him back, but if he won't put it right for free you could take some of it up and relay it with an expansion gap yourself, if the flooring itself isn't too damaged. It's not difficult.

DaviesMum · 06/08/2017 23:25

Agree with missymayhemsmum - it's not difficult to lay, you can buy a kit with all of the tools quite cheaply as well. It can't be any worse than what this tit has done.

MargotLovedTom1 · 06/08/2017 23:28

Has it got beading all round next to the skirting boards, as underneath the beading is where you'd have the expansion gap?
