I think it basically means as a couple your turning into couch potatoes....surely getting out and about is much better for you

On-demand telly has changed people's viewing habits. It's no great surprise really.

It's not like the olden days any more when you could only watch X programme at 9.30pm on Friday nights on channel 4. Now you can watch it whenever you like, and start the next episode immediately after.

I don't actually think it makes people watch any less telly tho, or that they're not doing the usual activities along side it. It just means you can cut the crap out and watch the one show at a time you actually want to watch.

You're quite right op. Adults on 'date night' should go out after work, run around, get fresh air, ride a bike, play with their friends before coming in for their tea (fish fingers, beans and smilies, v couplet meal) and do their homework. Then bath time and an early night.

Honestly, far too many adults are spending their evenings doing adult things, like watching adult appropriate programs and relaxing after a long day of working/child rearing, the fools.

As I said it Is a general observaion regarding people I know not a generalisation about everybody else. A couple of my single friends have been on so called dates when the guys wanted to stay in and watch BoxSets...which is all well and good but if you don't watch them that much it's hard to get over excited about watching Game Of Thrones series 7 episode 4 when you only got as far as series 4 episode 6 lol...this thread was not to make people angry....

To be fair I wouldn't see taking a dog for a walk as date material either. 'Hey do you want to come and see my dog shit and me pick it up, no, never mind...'

Blazedandconfused · 06/08/2017 10:22

Do you mean Netflix and Chill? That's slightly different to watching a box set.

user1497997754 · 06/08/2017 10:30

Possibly Netflix....my friend in question just said box sets. As for Gamerwidow response I met my husband dog walking on a date so was a really successful date.

Your argument is hardly coherent. You start with asking why box set watching has become the new dating activity and then try to exemplify it by box sets replacing reading books and meeting family.

I am as much of a bibliophile as you could well find, but even I would have drawn the line at somebody who suggested sitting down and reading a nice book as our first date. And frankly, "let's pop round and meet my Mum" wouldn't really have cut it either.

Dh and i used to read books on our early dates back when Borders opened late.

[nostalgic]

Now we have a great time watching House of Cards.

user1497997754 but you seem to be failing to grasp that dating is about doing something you both may find interesting. Great you and your now husband enjoy dog walking - that's a chore for me though and would have found it boring at least as a date. I love gaming, some of the best evenings I've had with my partner is a takeaway, some wine and one of us getting through a great game. Absolutely boring for others, but I loved finding some who thought that was a 'fun night'. If your friend found a night in with a box set boring, obviously she's not compatible with this guy.

As a side note, I'm noticing more posters using ellipsis instead of commas and full stops at the moment. It's making posts difficult to read/understand the actual point.

There isn't much you can do in terms of dates if you have children and limited funds.
The last time I went out for dinner with dh, the bill came in at £100. That's not something I can do every week. Netflix otoh costs about £8 per month.
Going out is just too expensive and is an unjustifiable expense when there is so much else to pay for.
It has also rained virtually every day for weeks, so not the best weather for picnics etc.

Very good points.

Can't see any harm in a couple doing what they enjoy!!! Confused

We watched box sets, and this was 12 years ago now, long before Netflix. We also read books (Harry Potter midnight release, then spent the rest of the next day reading side-by-side....heaven!)

So I don't think it's the "new dating", no. I think it's what certain people are interested in, and that's fine.

Albertschair · 08/08/2017 22:43

One of my first dates with dp was hanging round with her for a rainy day. TV on.

This was before Netflix. Id have preferred a TV binge.

Today we have been to two museums. Walk beside a loch. Walk on beach as pictured daughter paddled. Chatted about something we have both read. Been out for dinner and cocktails. And she's fallen asleep next to me watching our latest TV binge obsession American gods. I dont have the foggiest idea what is going on with it. So I will pause it to continue watching together tomorrow when dd is asleep again.

Pretty good date day for me.

Dates should be fun. If Netflix and chill is fun then do it! If not, do something else.

Cheap. Easy. Fun.
