My friend's dog just ate my meringue

So a good friend of mine is visiting with her family. We often visit one another although they are slightly more liberal in their parenting and as a result their kids are more device focused and verging on rude. Anyway this weekend they have arrived with their new dog who frankly is feral. Our dog has been pretty much traumatised by her wildness. But tonight we were watching the Usain Bolt race before the kids went to bed and their dog took the opportunity to eat a meringue off the kitchen counter. I think my friend just thought it was funny. But AIBU to make her and her DH only eat half a meringue after dinner while me and my DH have full portions?

Are you drunk?

LakieLady · 05/08/2017 22:45

Hmmm ... I generally take the view that when a dog gets something it shouldn't have, it's the human's fault for leaving it where the dog can get it.

If your friend knows the dog can reach worktops, she should have warned you. I think if it had been my dog, I would forego my meringue out of politeness, so probably not BU.

It could be worse though. One friend's lurcher snaffled half a joint of pork at a mutual friend's house. It was supposed to be her husband's packed lunches for the next couple of days.

yanbu
ltd (leave that dog)

liz70 · 05/08/2017 23:01

I remember when we first got our dog. In the early days, I once left a plate with bread and butter and biscuits on the table, unattended. I thought dogs only ate dog food, meat/fish, and bones.

I soon learned. Grin

That'll give it the shits.
Be prepared.

Ojoj1974 · 05/08/2017 23:04

Oops! My dog ran off last Yr and came back with a cooked joint of beef....

DontTouchTheMoustache · 05/08/2017 23:05

YANBU, that will teach them a valuable lesson.

Am i right, or a meringue?

Moustache GrinGrinGrin ace!

I'd surreptitiously leave a bucket, scrubbing brush, microfibre cloth and jays fluid (or something) outside their room. They're going to need it @=#### (that's an exploding dog trump... I'll get my coat).

Scaredycat3000 · 05/08/2017 23:10

If somebody brought a dog to my house that would be grounds enough to not even let them past the front door Grin Grin
YANBU at all.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/08/2017 23:15

Is it a terrier? Because no self-respecting terrier would leave an unattended meringue on a counter.

liz70 · 05/08/2017 23:23

Sighthounds are thieving bastards too. They'll eat anything vaguely edible, and plenty that isn't.

NewRug · 05/08/2017 23:24

Not read the full thread but this is so mumsnet I nearly spat my wine out..

Mumof56 · 05/08/2017 23:26

YANBU, give them half a portion

How do you know the dog hasn't slithered over the portions that's left? On second thoughts maybe just give it all to them and make them eat it, dog slobber & allHmm

Allthebestnamesareused · 05/08/2017 23:28

Moustache wins the internet today ,or meringue?

AdaColeman · 05/08/2017 23:33

Don't eat the meringue, the dog will have had a lick of them all, give the meringues all to the other couple.

MrsPorth · 05/08/2017 23:35

I bet it's a Labrador.

PhilTheSahd · 05/08/2017 23:41

DontTouchTheMoustache nice pun!!!

I think I would've made a small point about the fact that the dog had some, meant there was less to go round for humans than there should be, as I'm about to offer out portions (and hope that they offer to have a smaller portion to make up for it), maybe offer a "not as fancy but still reasonable" alternative pudding. Basically trying to subtly let them know your feelings without coming across as petty or grumpy and giving them an opportunity to make things right

innerturmoil · 05/08/2017 23:44

It's a border collie. She ate a whole meringue so nothing left slobbered on. The dog has now at least been put to bed in disgrace but my friends DH is now smoking a cigar! My DH is getting the cognac out so I think evening will end soon!

YABU he only eat it because it was in reach. My dog has eaten a frozen salmon and the tray it was defrosting on amongst other things I have left mistakenly in reach

Georgieporgypuddinandpie · 05/08/2017 23:47

I think cancel the pudding all together and eat the lot once they've gone..... That'll teach them!!

GreeboIsACutePussPuss · 06/08/2017 00:11

its your friends dog so they are the ones that go without.

I take it you have a nice well trained dog who doesn't steal food? When I first got mine he got an entire block of cheese off the worktop because I was used to my parents dogs who have all been really well trained and just didn't think.

elephantoverthehill · 06/08/2017 00:16

Eton mess.
