Laptop woes

I'm posting here for traffic. I have the worst luck with laptops - either not enough memory so I have to hook it up to external memory hard drive thing. Then went back to my old one which works but overheats and cooks my knee every time I use it. I just need a laptop with a decent sized screen, decent enough memory and a CD drive. I've looked on line but the whole hard drive size etc really confuses me?! I'm a student again so need something large enough that will fit my work docs and essays on without saying I need external memory to save what I need to. AIBU to ask what laptops you have? Or what laptop your student children have? Does anyone have the Dell Inspiron 5000 or similar? I've looked and it's got either brilliant or rubbish reviews - please help!!

Hi OP,

I buy laptops as part of my Job, in terms of recommendations it really depends on what type of budget you have.
You also need to shop around, the link below is a really good mid range one which has everything you need as described above and plenty of Hard Drive space to store all your documents etc..

( and no I don't work for this company)

I would either recommend HP or Dell.
Hope this helps, good luck finding your laptop.

You could consider cloud storage - Microsoft one drive is pretty painless to use if you sync it directly and with an office 365 subscription you get 1tb storage. That would reduce the hard drive storage issues.

Documents shouldn't be taking up much room at all. Unless you're working with videos or similar I don't think that's your problem. You can replace just the hard drive for more space though.

Dells are good and sturdy but do tend to overheat. Hp seem better ventilated.

It's worth looking at the Dell outlet - they often have very good deals. Ime their business laptops are better and more robust

Buy more memory. Buy a laptop cooler for your lap. Job done.

I have a mac - can't recommend it enough. I think buying an external hard drive is reasonable tbh. These days they don't have to be the size of a small car and you can save all your coursework there so you free up RAM and space on your main laptop.

If you are a student you will likely get access to university storage and possibly cloud storage as well, plus software. There may even be discount schemes, so check before you spend.

If you buy a new laptop you can buy more ram at the same time, you can also buy and add it to a laptop you own. Mine have never had enough memory, it has always been added. I store a lot of images and reference docs. on mine.
