There's no solution to mental illness?

I've seen quite a few YouTube clips and documentaries where mentally ill people still suffering quite badly have been discharged from receiving any care, because they're told nothing more can be done for them. I don't know if I'm the only one, but surely it doesn't help to say this to people who are already feeling extremely bad about themselves? Surely this could potentially trigger them to self-harm or worse? I've witnessed a lot of people generally treat the mentally ill like pariahs or shun them by calling them 'freaks' or 'nutters'. There still seems to be so much stigma attached to mental illness which is preventing any real way of finding effective treatments. But from what I've seen, society actually drives people to give up or harm themselves in some way by making them feel like a problem and forgetting they're actually human beings too.

The saddest thing about mental illness is the fact that close friends and family become mentally ill trying to help the person that is mentally ill.

ChristinaParsons Exactly. Then the person with the mental illness will end up feeling worse out of guilt. I know it's upsetting, but it is torture to not have any real treatment available for your mental health. The tories go on about big society, but then cuts due to their government have led to cuts in what little help there was out there. People in the community are not as understanding as they like to think: calling people 'freaks' and deliberately steering clear of them. I got laughed at whilst at school because of my depression. Yes, there are people worse off in the world, but why I can't I give in finally and ensure someone else can live a life I'm not capable of? Like why can't I be allowed to die but make sure a refugee can take my life and do what I can't because of my mental illness destroying everything?

OP I did wonder if it was that you feel that you no longer want to live Flowers I've been there myself. I've also had a psychologist tell me there was nothing more he could do to help with my PTSD and understand how distressing this can be. Luckily I found another therapist privately who used a different approach and cured my PTSD in 2 sessions. I think the origional one organised my my employer just wasn't very good or wasn't the right one for me.

Other people can be unpleasant with regards to mental health. Things are definately improving from a stigma perspective with the more common mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, even bipolar, but the stigma arround psychosis and schizophrenia is still a huge problem. DH doesn't tell anyone his diagnosis.

NolongerAnxiousCarer Thank you. It's so nice when someone understands but it's also sad that the person has to be online as you don't have anyone there for you emotionally in real life.

We've been told there's no solution for my dads severe depression. We just have to spend the rest of our/ his life trying to make sure he doesn't kill himself but doctors have categorically said there's nothing more they can do. It's very stressful.

My mental illness cannot be cured. As it isn't physical, it is often difficult for people to understand. I try to explain it is just another lifelong condition, like high blood pressure. If I had that, I wouldn't be cured, but would make lifestyle changes and take medication to try and manage it.

Like Resurgam, I try to be aware of the warning signs and try not to do anything too drastic when I'm on a super downer.
