I've just hung my washing out on the line

And the heavens have opened.

I'm not getting it in, as it can't get any wetter.

BIL is here and he's TWITCHING. He's asked us several times if we're sure we want to leave it. And keeps commenting that 'ooh it's really coming down now' and looking out at the garden.

I'm just glad he wasn't here at 7am when I got the darked on loads in...

I thought people who stressed about this kind of thing were just invented on MN. I didn't realise actual adults feel the need to rescue wet washing from the rain, or dry washing from the dark.

I saw one online that had an breaks sort of thingy to keep clothes covered if rain comes. Depends if your rain is vertical or horizontal... :o

My neighbour has a wee tarp that she throws over the top and pegs on if there is a small shower - but then she is at home all day and has 4 kids.

Lucysky2017 · 05/08/2017 14:22

I do bring mine in if it rains (but am lucky enough to have a utility room with space to dry stuff so I tend only to put it out when I am sure of no rain (but hard at present as it's raining on and off all this month and last it seems)

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/08/2017 14:25

I really want a pulley but my ceilings are so high fck knows how I'd get it up there*

You just get one with a longer rope. We put a knot in ours so we can hook it a couple of feet above the worktop to hang the washing on, then another knot that you pull it up to (just below ceiling height) and then wrap the rope round the hook to secure it. You'd just do the same but pull it up higher.

Cailleach666 · 05/08/2017 14:59

A pulley would be fine in a utility room, but I wouldn't want one in a kitchen- who wants laundry smelling of cooking smells.

woodhill · 05/08/2017 15:00

Looks iffy here now

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/08/2017 15:09

Agree Cailleach666 hence the move as our utility was just a wee inset bit off the kitchen originally.

Seeingadistance · 05/08/2017 15:15

Thought of this thread as I was out a wee minute ago bringing in washing as I noticed a wee skliff of rain. I only brought in the very nearly dry washing though - the newly hung is still out there.

I would love a pulley!

I had just put our guinea pig out!

madentitlement · 05/08/2017 15:39

Ugh it makes me cringe! If you can't be arsed to bring it in then buy a tumble dryer. Next doors HMO leave washing on the line for weeks it makes me SICK

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 05/08/2017 15:43

Surely everyone knows that washing left out overnight gets Darked On And Spiders.

It''s a MN mantra Grin

Genghi · 05/08/2017 15:43

@madentitlement - agreed!

SerfTerf · 05/08/2017 15:44

Have some Gin made you big crosspatch.

I had a three day stand off with my washing this week. BIL is right. Bring it in.

I hung the DCs bed sheets to dry. Got drenched. Left them out again to dry out. Got drenched. Brought them in, rinsed them, hung them back out and the same thing happened.

I'm sat here twitching for another reason now. I've just let the DCs 'help'. By hanging the washing out. They've hung everything upside down AND used mismatched pegs. I said thankyou through gritted teeth and twiddly thumbs Wink

SerfTerf · 05/08/2017 15:47

That was hail amic? Shock I hope it was a balsawood plane. That's terrifying.

Floggingmolly · 05/08/2017 15:51

There is no point in taking wet washing indoors because it's raining! There is such thing as a maximum saturation point, rarely reached in the UK because we don't tend to have full on monsoons, and after that, when the rain stops; they start to dry.

NotAPuffin · 05/08/2017 16:10

What happens if a guinea pig gets darked on? Does it turn into a gremlin?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/08/2017 16:23

Is it OK for laundry to be thundered on?!

I think the jury's still out on "thundered". Replicating the research conditions has proved to difficult to get reliable results. Being darked on is easier to test because that happens every single night (unless you live above the Arctic circle.)

The risks of spider jizz over darked on sheets is shockingly high.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/08/2017 16:26

I have one of those Brabantia things that fix on the wall & pull out. It's fantastic!

Same here - I like the washing outside because it is fresher (it IS), but if weather is awful, I use the thingy. It is great.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 05/08/2017 16:28

No Puffin - a Werepig.

You really don't want that to happen. Trust me.

youarenotkiddingme · 05/08/2017 16:35

Well it's been fairly sunny and a bit breezy all afternoon. Still no rain forecast - except I've just made a coffee before heading down to get in my MN banned apparently! beach towels from the line and it's rained again Confused

I think they'll be finished off in the dryer at this rate!

The irony is we don't go away for 12 days. It's just with plans next week as well as forecast at beginning of week I thought it would be good to do it now!

How wrong can one person be Grin

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 05/08/2017 17:11

Darked on = washing that has been left out on the dark....the dark has got on the washing

Oh so it's washing that has been left out overnight? Okay, that makes sense.

Allington · 05/08/2017 17:33

Am very worried about my washing. I dry it indoors, but in a room with no light on overnight. Is it also at risk of being darked on ? Or does that only happen in the Great Outdoors?

Lucysky2017 · 05/08/2017 20:40

it's a huge problem for lots of people. People used to hang lines across back streets before cars. moving to this house with a separate utility room just for the boiler, drier, tumbel drier and spare sink and second fridge freezer - even now I still appreciate that spare room so much off the kitchen although I try to dry outside or on the 2 fold out hanger things rather than the drier if I can. My mother had a pull down thing for drying clothes in her very small utility room but it always looked a bit cumbersome. It does help though if you don't have space down below. With 5 children we've always had drying issues. I remember when we had 3 in cloth nappies at night still as the 4 year old still wet the bed (the oldest) - that was a huge job to get the nappies dry before we could afford a drier.

Piggywaspushed · 05/08/2017 20:41

I've just brought mine in . It is beginning to get dark and it was nearly dry. if I left it out to get darked on it would be damp in the morning all over again. Thus DH's pants would experience 'dampage'
