to think it would have been more efficient if this cashier had broken the rules

I have a self-service current account that comes with a higher interest rate than an account with human interaction.
Today I went into their branches to pay in some cash. There was a slight queue for the machines but no queue at the counter with a staff member free. It didn't look like he was carrying out another task. I went up to him and asked, very nicely, if he could pay the money in for me.
He replied, very nicely: "Sorry,it's a self-service account. You need to use the machine.'
Fair enough, I got back in the queue and paid my money in at the machine.
I know they HAVE the facilities because I have used the counter in similar situations (in some instances I was told by a staff member to use the counter as it would be quicker.
In our scenario the cashier would have shortened the queue for the machines and created a positive customer service experience and I can't really see a downside to serving me at the counter. Aibu to think that sometimes it improves everyone's day to go against The Rules? Just to clarify: I'm not fuming, livid or upset - just interested to see what other's think.

Id be fuming if i had to queue behind you and id paid for that service and you hadnt

Well, you wouldn't know, because OP was the only one in the queue for cashier and the cashier isn't likely to mention it at the end of the transaction 'now don't expect this every time, you cheeky FlexDirect scamp!'

And I know lots of MNers fume at the slightest thing, but this would be a truly ridiculous reason to get het up.

So why are you asking whether it is reasonable to have expected him to do it, if you didn't expect it? This makes no sense.

Again, I know the rules that come 2ith my account but I thought that there was a chance to save about 2 minutes without inconveniencing someone else. I was prepared for him to say no - but if you don't ask, you don't get.

I started the thread to discuss the value of rigidly sticking to the rules vs using them as a guideline to make society run smoother.

I'm very much of the camp of rules are there to serve the people and think there is great value in questioning why a certain rule has been put in place.
WRT to the bank account of course I know why the rules are in place.

PS: yes, I am a FlexDirect Scamp. I can only recommend them.

I have the same account - I prefer online banking and would recommend to anyone who mainly banks online.

If this were my branch, sticking to the rules would mean that the door was completely blocked, which isn't what you want - for safety, or just to make the place look tidy and welcoming.

Rules and procedure should make things run efficiently. And common sense should be employed. I know the no common sense approach is often enforced by managers so I'm not blaming individual cashiers.

I agree with you, OP. Questioning if doing things a certain way is the best way for the situation is how things improve for the better.
