I mean, what is the opposite? "Do-badder"?

WTF is wrong with doing good, and what's so good about doing bad?

I thank you.

don't give a monkeyeeser

saadia · 28/03/2007 13:41

now that you mention it it is bizarre. I think it maybe refers to people who meddle, in which case it is not a good choice of words.

warthog · 28/03/2007 13:43

'a well-meaning but unrealistic or interfering philanthropist or reformer'

vimfuego · 28/03/2007 13:45

One of those insults that tells you more about the person doing the insulting.

Greenleeves · 28/03/2007 13:53

It's one of those terms that generally emanates from someone who is resenting been shown up as selfish and mean, because someone else has had the audacity to display a bit of altruism and a social conscience.

Similarly "PC gone mad!!" - one of my favourites that - usually the cry of Sun-reading shitwits who are kicking up big noisy clouds of indignant bluster to cover the fact that they/one of their precious celebrity icons have been caught out being racist/abusive in some way.

TheArmadillo · 28/03/2007 13:55

its meant to be insulting and condescending though isn't it? Have no idea of context in this case though.

Agree that its similar to 'PC gone mad' - which is a phrase I detest as it is usually complaining about something that has nothing to do with political correctness.

My DH calls one our neighbours this and it really annoys me. She's the one who nags the council and gets graffiti cleaned up and extra litter pick-ups done and is on top of every appalling planning application that will make our area even more overcrowded and overused. She also remembers all the kids birthdays which is a tall order in our street. And for this she gets insulted by all and sundry. Because she talks a lot and asks people to put up posters etc. Infuriating.

unknownrebelbang · 28/03/2007 17:00

Get called this all the time.

tis the profession.

Wouldn't mind, but I do admin, not the "gooding".

eemie · 28/03/2007 17:32

There are two kinds of 'do-gooders' in my book:

  1. People with a conscience who try to help others, as seen by those who don't have a conscience and don't try;

  2. People who are 'unco' guid' as the Scots expression goes - who try to help others partly by telling them what's good for them and let everyone know that they're doing it.

Agree about 'PC gone mad'. It usually means 'not overtly discriminatory'
