DS3 has developed a cough over the past few days and he is wheezing when he breathes, quite audibly. Previously, when he has had a persistent cough I've taken him and they listen for a rattling.

I don't want to waste their time and I don't want to go and be told that there's nothing they can do. WWYD? he's not lacklustre or lolling around, he's quite his usual self, a little tired because the coughing disturbs his sleep a bit but otherwise seems fine.

I'm with you Op. Worth keeping an eye on him, but not necessarily rushing off to A&E. One of mine can sound terribly wheezy at times with a cough, but the Gp has confirmed no infection. The GP said a squeak is more the sound to listen for than a wheeze in his case.

Otoh the only time any of mine have had bad pneumonia there was no wheeze, no coughing, the only outward sign was she said her shoulder hurt. She managed 3 dance shows and a swimming party before I took her to check her shoulder, and the GP looked at her statistics and said he couldn't believe she was even able to stand up.

Yup, GP first thing.

I got a right royal bollicking when I took a wheezy DS in at 9am, was told I should have called for an ambulance at 2am when it started.

I have asthma and just did not click that my perfectly healthy 3YO was having an asthma attack. Triggered by dust apparently.

I called 111, they are going to get someone to call me back to answer a few more questions. I'm torn between feeling silly and that he's fine and feeling worried that there's something wrong.

Good luck OP. 111 will most probably tell you to go to A&E, they did with my DS. A&E is not fun and I totally get not wanting to go- but wheezing is really not something to mess with. Hopefully he'll be fine and you'll be seen quickly and get home, but if it is what my DS had hospital is the best place. My DS really didn't seem that unwell but required oxygen on all 3 admissions. Good luck.

If child is settled and you can't hear a wheeze when asleep and not coughing then gp Ib the morning.

If you hear a wheeze or see 'tummy breathing' so using extra muscles to breathe or shoulders moving to breathe, a and e now.

Sometimes noisy breathing can sound like a wheeze but it's all in the throat and upper airways and not actually a wheeze on the chest when heard through a stethoscope.

Count his respirations per minute. Each in&out is one. Then look up normally respiratory rate for his age and that will let you know if he is breathing too quickly.
