I rent my flat through a housing association.
I love it.
It's basically one house with a upstairs and downstairs flat.
Own garden at the back which is huge and as the other tenant is quite old she doesn't use I've done it out lovely.
Spent a fortune carpeting /decorating etc
It's massive inside so loads of room, they've just put a new kitchen and bathroom in so its lovely.
I've just found out I'm pregnant and the housing association have said you can't stay in with a baby.
They have offered me a 2 bedroom house or a 3 bedroom house which are nice don't get me wrong but I'm happy where I am.
I've viewed both but the 3 bedroom needs more work than the 2.
The thought of decorating and carpeting again makes me feel so upset.
I'm happy where I am.
I thought a baby didn't need its own room till it was older?
So that's that we have to move to the house..
Is anything I can do?
Speak to citizens advice? Etc

I can see why you wouldn't want to move.

How pregnant are you and how has the HA found out?

Jojo456233 · 03/08/2017 18:44

4 months.
I told them as I thought if I didn't and they found out I may affect my tenancy agreement.
Maybe I should of kept my mouth shut

They are offering you a bigger house !!! You are going to need to move anyway !!!
The offer might not be there next time !

SabineUndine · 03/08/2017 18:59

Will they compensate you for what you've spent?

c3pu · 03/08/2017 19:04

Take the move, you may well not get the chance later.

Marymoosmum14 · 03/08/2017 19:05

What housing association is this? I am 7 months pregnant and he wont count until he is born and I can produce a birth certificate, we have been desperate for a house for since my DD was born 3 years ago as the flat isn't big enough but because it has 2 bedrooms we aren't eligible, I wish they would offer me a new house.

LuLuuuuuuu · 03/08/2017 19:06

JoJo does it stipulate that no children are to be in the homes ? If so, then I'd probably snap up their offer of one or the other houses .

Shame though as it sounds like you put body and soul into making the place nice.

Custardo · 03/08/2017 19:10

also if you get benefits calculate how your finances ae going to be

for instance will you be considered to have a spare room if you have two children of the same sex and accept a 3 bed?. on these grounds you could argue to wait

england.shelter.org.uk/housing_advice/housing_benefit/bedroom_tax_are_you_affected

Custardo · 03/08/2017 19:11

to wait until the baby is born to make a decision i meant

Allthewaves · 03/08/2017 19:13

If houses are nice but need work then take them. Could your carpets be refitted in the new house? You can also take lights and things you have brought

Jojo456233 · 03/08/2017 19:16

I'm in Newcastle.
They won't recompensate no.
I've paid for new flooding in kitchen too.
I don't think the carpets will fit tbh

It says no children or pets in flats

Hotheadwheresthecoldbath · 03/08/2017 19:18

Take 3 bed,if you slowly make that nice it has longevity if you have another child. If it's nice then take this opportunity,as others say as the squeeze on houses continues you may not have this choice.

Katiekatie37 · 03/08/2017 19:21

My borough don't count a child as a whole person till they are 18 months old 🤔. So only 1 beds would be allocated to adults with a baby under that age, but every borough is different. Why have they offered you a 3bed? Seems an odd move if you don't need it and 3beds are often needed. It would be easier moving now than with a baby though.

Sparklepants · 03/08/2017 19:27

You are very bloody lucky. Take the house before they charge their mind.

Jojo456233 · 03/08/2017 19:27

Those are the 2 property's available in my area of choice.

bbcessex · 03/08/2017 19:44

Do you have to decide / do it now?

It seems a bit early to move before the baby is here.. what's the cut off point? No young babies at all?

although if the houses are nice and could become equivalent to standard you have already, I probably would .

Maelstrop · 03/08/2017 19:46

Stop being daft, man and choose one of the others. Your title is unnecessarily dramatic: want me out of my home?! Ridiculous, they want to offer you a bigger, better and more appropriate for a baby style property.

hiphopcat · 03/08/2017 19:47

That is VERY odd. I have never heard of this before. Most councils and HA's won't make you move out of a flat if you have a baby. They will consider a request to move into a house if you ASK, but they don't usually force you to move.

As has been said though, if you are being offered a house, I would consider it.

ItsNachoCheese · 03/08/2017 19:53

I was in a one bed flat before i had ds which had 17 steep steps to the front door. Being heavily pregnant having to go up and down was hell. I applied for a bigger property and got offered a 2 bedroom house 2 months before ds was born. I was so happy to be out the flat i could of cried. Take the bigger property op

Allthewaves · 03/08/2017 20:12

I'd be thinking long term. Take the 3 bed and think of it as your forever home

AntiHop · 03/08/2017 20:16

So are you breaking your tenancy by having a child in your home? I'd call the shelter helpline for advice. It seems unreasonable to me to disallow children.

lalalalyra · 03/08/2017 20:22

How often do other properties come up?

The only time I've seen a HA offer a bigger property before a baby was born was when it was a multiple pregnancy and a 3 bed came up for the first time in something like 3 years. So they knew that it would be the only chance they'd have to have one empty for the family.

Dancingfairy · 03/08/2017 20:25

Wow I was living in a one bed flat with 2 kids and waited 3 and a half years for somewhere bigger. Certainly weren't allowed a 3 bed I'm surprised they are offering you a 3 bed tbh

Gizmo79 · 03/08/2017 20:29

And you are complaining?
Seriously?
